Don't want him to get reinjured! However, I suppose its worth the risk against the spuds and he has been in excellent form for us all this season.

He can get a rest after the Spurs game, won't play in the FA Cup against Swansea and will probably also be rested for the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi final at the Stadium of Light. He can come back on the 11th against Swansea at home. Let's just hope we get RvP back quickly.

I wouldn't usually want him to play but it's worth the risk. Hopefully he can come through it unscathed then I'd give him 10 days rest vs Swansea and Sunderland in the cup games. Then bring him back for the Premier League game vs Swansea. Saying that, I may have him on the bench vs Swansea in the cup game.

"He was missing because he has a bit of an adductor injury in his groin, but it's not serious," Moyes said when asked about Rooney's absence. "He missed the Stoke game in the [League] cup with it a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately he missed this one as well today.
"If we hadn't got so many games and we could give him a couple of weeks off just to recover, but I think he would be fine. I'd expect him to be okay for the next game against Tottenham."

Moyes

After the game Moyes said this:
“The plan was to play Wayne for 90 minutes, but he has a bit of a groin injury,” said Moyes. “The longer it went on, we had to try to get more attacking players on the pitch to try and find more ways to score. If I could (rest Rooney) I would, but the games are coming thick and fast. He has missed a game with his groin and he may well miss some more coming up.”

I find it incredibly annoying that we're probably going to lose him for longer because we gambled playing him yesterday. We did the same with Carrick, RvP and Fellaini with their respective injuries. It was quite obvious that Rooney wasn't fully fit yesterday and shouldn't have been playing. He was nowhere near as influential or even as mobile as he usually is. I just don't see the benefit in playing injured players in attempt to eke out a result when the result is usually that they're peripheral and struggle to influence the game and end up
being out of the team for longer.

You do wonder if Rooney had a point when he came out and said he didn't think we were showing ambition in the transfer market. He's probably frustrated that he has to do everything - create, score, defend etc. as a striker you want people creating for you and yet here he is creating for everyone and for himself. Yes we did sign rvp but other than that our first team is not to the required level, especially midfield and wingers. I get the feeling even rvp and Hernandez are feeling the same now.

Looked as if he was in pain as early as the 70th minute, maybe it was before that! Thought he was well considering he was carrying the groin injury. He's so gifted with his passes

Sadly, it looks as if we'll be without him for a good week or two.

The rest of the team are so awful I can see why Moyes desperately wanted to play him.

Hindsight is a difficult thing. If we won yesterday, it would have been seen as a masterstroke because of all the coming games, this seemed like the one we needed to win (up until the Chelsea game anyway). We wouldn't have won without Rooney, so it was worth the crack. It's annoying, don't get me wrong - but it was a risk worth taking to get 3 points against one of our main rivals in the table ()

Getting Rooney to sign a new contract must be a priority now he is the only outfield real top class player we have who is coming into his prime. Losing him will be a travesty and very big blow for United.

Agreed. Keeping him ahead of next season would be massive for us. He's been with us for so long, that I'm sure we'll be going into another transition of not having him  We need to build the team around him, Welbeck, Januzaj, De Gea and Jones from the current crop we have.

It's no wonder he gets so frustrated at times. Ended up covering for others yesterday once again. He simply shouldn't need to be putting in the amount of work he is at the minute. I couldn't tell you where he was playing yesterday because he was covering for 2 or 3 players at times. Whilst one of our midfield players couldn't be arsed doing his job feeling the need to stand up front, Rooney was the one dropping deep once again attempting to influence the game, as well as attempting to offer a creative outlet in the final third. Must have been a nightmare playing up front yesterday.

I worry for us without him. He's held us together at times this season.

He must be sick of playing in midfield, the passes are great but the players he is passing to rarely do anything with them. We are much better off with him in the final third.

Its a short sighted way of looking at things though because we have Chelsea in a couple of weeks (I think) and playing him yesterday could mean he's out for that.

I can't see him staying unless serious investment is made to convince him, this is a guy who was whining even when we were league champions.

At his age he has one more shot at winning a succession of trophies and being part of an already good team. He can walk into one of those ready made good teams now, or stay and be a part of a re-build that might take a few seasons. I think he feels he's given most of his football years to United, and now with all the changes possible feels he'd like a shot somewhere else as a last hurrah to his career. On that front, and looking at what is happening to team now, I really can't say i'd blame him.

Only 31 goals away from Sir Bobby's record too. 4 away from becoming 3rd in the list.

Whatever happens, he's most definitely repaid his price-tag. I know he's not a favourite among here, but I'm a big fan. Hope he retires with us, however slim that may be.

also Rafael Evans Zaha and Smalling

If Rooney wants to be here, he'll be here. It is that simple. I'm sure we'll offer him a good contract.

Wayne Rooney could miss more matches for Manchester United due to ongoing groin injury, reveals David Moyes

Rooney appeared to be short on fitness in the defeat to Spurs but David Moyes kept him on the pitch in an effort to salvage the result at Old Trafford

The forward looked some way short of full fitness. However, with Robin van Persie still not ready to return from a thigh problem, Moyes does not have the option of merely offering Rooney an extended break.

"If I could (rest him), I would," said Moyes.

"He has missed a couple of games with his groin and may well miss some more in the games coming up.

"But the longer it went on (against Tottenham), we had to try and get more attacking players on the pitch to find more ways score."

Danny Welbeck did pull a goal back after Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen had struck for the visitors, but it was not enough to stave off a fourth home defeat of the campaign, the quickest United have reached that unhappy position since 1986.
With Tottenham leapfrogging them, United are now seventh in the table, five points adrift of the final Champions League place and 11 behind leaders Arsenal.
Yet Moyes insists his plans for the transfer window, a notoriously difficult time to bring in players of quality, remain unaffected.

"The result today would never have any effect on what we do, whether in January or the summer," he said.
"It wasn't our day but it won't change the way we go about our business

Two or three more games before he's out for a month or two.

fecking hell, we've been really screwed by injuries this season.

As soon as RVP is back Rooney will get rested IMO.

He was clearly not fit yesterday and looked well off the pace - but what can you expect on practically 1 leg.

It's a real shame it has got to that for us really, but unfortunately this season has been a real tester.

I hate saying this but if I was him and we didnt finish in top 4, I'd want out. And I also mean that in the sense that I wouldn be a United fan in that case because as we know Rooney's an Evertonian.

He's been sooo good this season and it must be frustrating to be that productive and yet your teammates cant pick up the slack when required. Is he willing to stick around for another transition despite being in his prime? I doubt it. Sadly, I think he's off

Moyes confirms bad news that Rooney’s injury is ‘not getting any better’

David Moyes has indicated that Wayne Rooney may have to spend more time on the sidelines than expected after revealing that his injury has not improved when asked in today’s press conference.
The 28-year-old missed the win over Norwich City during the festive period thanks to a groin injury but returned against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2-1 loss last week, where it was obvious that he wasn’t 100% match fit.
After the Spurs game, Moyes admitted that Rooney may have to miss a couple of matches in order to regain full fitness but by the sounds of it, he hasn’t progressed as well as Moyes would have hoped since then.
Rooney has been absolutely instrumental for United this season and in his absence with Robin van Persie already sidelined, we have struggled to be creative going forward.
The big match in January is without question the clash against Chelsea on 19 January and if it is a case of resting Rooney until then to make sure he doesn’t aggravate his injury further, Moyes needs to do that.

Injured Wayne Rooney stalling on new contract at Manchester United
David Moyes has concerns over Wayne Rooney's immediate and longer term future, with the Manchester United manager admitting he must wait and see if the striker will consider signing a contract extension in the summer should they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

In the short term, Rooney's groin injury means he will miss Sunday's FA Cup game against Swansea City at Old Trafford and it could also sideline him for Tuesday evening's Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Sunderland.

The forward has also entered the final 18 months of a reputed £300,000-a-week deal with the uncertainty about his future compounded by his being reluctant, it is understood, to enter any discussions until after the World Cup.

United's 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on New Year's Day left the champions 11 points behind the leaders, Arsenal, and increased doubts about their ability to finish in the top four. The champions are five points off fourth-placed Liverpool. At 28, Rooney is conscious he has only one major move left so wants to weigh his options carefully.

The Liverpudlian is enjoying one of the finest campaigns of a United career that is approaching a decade. Last season he was dropped and played out of position by Sir Alex Ferguson but Rooney has been restored to the side's focal point due to Moyes's faith in him and Robin van Persie's continuing injury problems. All of this has strengthened Rooney's position with regard to his next move and the prospect of playing for a club not in the Champions League may not be palatable.

Asked how confident Moyes would be of Rooney signing fresh terms if United did not finish in the top four, the Scot said: "Well, we would have to wait and see what [would] happen if that situation arose."

Moyes, though, believes Rooney is happy at the club. "I thought if you looked at his performances you'd have to say he's certainly playing at his best."

After the loss to Tottenham Moyes admitted that Rooney was carrying the groin injury and that he may miss matches due to it. This will now occur and the forward was pictured leaving Manchester's Bridgewater hotel holding a DVD containing the results of a scan.

While Moyes did not confirm the length of time Rooney may be out he did say that the striker will miss Swansea's visit to Old Trafford. "He's got a groin injury and won't be available for the game," said the manager, though he added that there was a chance he would be fit for Sunderland.

Van Persie, who has a thigh problem, and Ashley Young, who hurt a shoulder against Spurs, are also unavailable for Swansea, along with Phil Jones, Rafael da Silva, Nani and Marouane Fellaini.

Young, who had a scan on Friday, suffered his injury when being challenged by Hugo Lloris. "I don't know how long it will keep him out but he won't be available on Sunday," Moyes said. "It looks as if it's bad bruising at the moment."

Moyes reiterated his belief that United should have been awarded a penalty for the incident and that the Spurs goalkeeper should have been sent off by the referee, Howard Webb. "I don't need to repeat myself again and I'm not going to continue talking about it. I make mistakes," Moyes said. "Refs can make mistakes, I have no problem with that. I will try to own up to mine and stick my hand up if I get it wrong. Sometimes it would be nice if referees did that too but if they don't it's not a big thing for me. It's their prerogative. It's up to them how they go about their business."

Moyes's priority in the January transfer window is a midfielder and he would not rule out signing a player cup-tied for the Champions League. "I think it is important, but it's not the biggest thing because obviously you've got other games to play, FA Cup ties, League Cup ties, Premier League games," he said. "But if they are available you would like them to be able to play in the Champions League as well."

Despite speculation that United could revive their interest in Chelsea's Juan Mata, Moyes refused to discuss the playmaker and it is understood that the club will not move for the Spaniard or Ross Barkley in January. "I would never talk about players at other clubs. That is my stock answer. I didn't do it in the summer and I certainly would do it now," he said.

The Scot added that he would consider taking United away for a warm weather break if possible. "We could do if we felt there is time. Sometimes it can help. If I see the right opportunity then I could look at it," Moyes said.
