10 goals and 9 assists in 19 appearances this season. Well done Wayne.

I think he was excellent. He played like a proper no. 10: good movement and passing, and controlled the direction of United play. He had good understanding with the movement of midfielders and attacking players Cleverley, Janujaz, Welbeck, and Valencia.

Didn't think he was great today. Seemed to be something off with him

I thought he looked great. His touch and passing were both on point. He makes a massive difference to our side when he plays in a deeper role. It's really no coincidence that we're playing better with him in said deep position. It's arguably his best position.

I really like him in the deeper role. Some inch-perfect long passes & even if he's not scoring as much, he makes our side tick.

Good game from wayne, pulled the strings from that slightly deeper role well. Hopefully welbeck isn't injured and we can keep playing Rooney in this sort of role. Or we at least try to same role with Hernandez playing right up top

We look much better when he is playing just bit deeper, even when he is not having his best game.

He's a team player, that's why he has more assists than goals. Composed and experienced display.

For a few moments I actually thought Scholesy was still playing. Some beautiful diagonal balls to Valencia. Pulled the strings in his deeper role and its no surprise this change in tactics has brought along better results. I think he does enjoy being so heavily involved in the action and having that free role. It might reduce his goal scoring chances but it makes us an infinitely better team.

At least until we find a top class midfielder to partner Carrick, Rooney should play that deeper linkup role.

The only way his performance gets better today is if he scores a goal. Wonderful from him, absolutely bossed it.

Last year Wayne whinged that he didn't like being made to play in midfield but it's clearly the best thing for the team and was always on the cards for him as he ages.

Two of the 'four' at Leverkusen won't ever be counted as 'official' assists. There are always discrepancies though. I remember Chelsea.com stating Mata had something mad like 35 in his first season, but the 'official' stats had him down closer to 20.

A poster in the general PL thread said that Suarez was making Rooney "look average". Obviously Suarez is in blistering form as of now, but it's an entirely different role to that of Rooney. The way Rooney ran the game today was fantastic.

I've no idea why he complained about having to fill in at midfield last season given that today he was collecting the ball from Evans, turning round and then orchestrating the play entirely.

I'v seen and heard plenty of reports saying that Rooney had four assists that night, I'll find them later. 18 is about right going by the fantasy football way of things anyway, not sure why people think it's ridiculous.

obviously someone who does not really understand the game.

Rooney has effectively taken over the Scholes role....then some. That is why the midfield is so solid. Moyes must have told him to 'help out' until we get re enforcements. Also I am sure he will sign a bumper contract soon enough.

all good.

Scratch that, UEFA have them down on their site but all the 'stats' websites have him down for two that night. If I remember correctly one came from a chance he missed, and one deflected off him after the keeper made a save? Not what I'd call an 'assist' but it's not that big of a deal. We all know he's the hub of the team and most of what we do comes through him.

Goals that go in off your leg accidentally still count as goals, so I think those assists should count too personally.

18 for the season, what a player. Ozil who?

I think Rooney saw being moved to midfield initially as SAF saying he wasn't as good as RVP which he resented.

In truth, and hopefully what Moyes is saying to Rooney now, is that it's more a case of "we need you to be the saviour of our midfield" - a challenge he should relish.

3 of them were normal assists, first was a cross to valencia at the back post, second was an inswinging free kick that Spahic headed in for an og, then there was the little lob over the keeper that smalling tapped in. The debatable one was when he shot it, keeper saved it and it fell to Evans for the rebound. Some sites count that as an assist, but most people don't see it that way. He definitely had 3 though.

Wayne Rooney assists according to UEFA, PL and the Football League:

CL: 6
PL: 13
COC: 2

Overall: 21

Not entirely sure what constitutes as an 'assist' to some of these stats collections but we'll take that.

It would be 3 assists, like I said in my post to Fergus'son. There was 2 crosses and then the lob that smalling tapped in. The only debatable one was the shot.

21 assists?

fecking hell. Not too long ago people were wanking over Mata's assists tally of 30 odd. He'll comfortably beat that at this rate

He's playing deeper..albeit slightly differently, but it's not what he wants. If Moyes has said to him..hey Wayne, play there for now and I'll try to sort it out in January..then fine..but if it continues he will still have the same complaints he had with Fergie at the end of last season. He just doesn't want to play there....

What happen to the redcafe stats thread?

Quit being an arse.

He has 18 assists or thereabouts, some have him over that number some have him under. Either way, it's not 'ridiculous'.

 You're the one who made it into an issue. I don't agree with you that he has 18 assists, stop crying about it.

I asked why you think it's 'ridiculous' to suggest he has 18 (when he does!). Answer the question properly or don't at all, you arse.

Premierleague.com has him down at 13 alone. CL website has him at 6. COC stats say he has 2. I'd be somewhat impressed if they were all slashed by half but I'm sticking with 21 now.

Does it list his assists, because most places have him as 8 for the Premier League. If you give him the two against Leverkusen then that would be 16, but people disagree if they count.
