Good game. He's still an out and out forward, and one of the best in the game at that. However, his presence in a deeper role helped the team today, although he is still too clumsy in there for my liking.

playing in the midfield for most of the game just vindicates SAF decision to deploy him there last season.
Not sure what all the fuss was about from his side when Moyes has asked him to do the same as SAF for this game.
Rooney is more useful in midfield for this Utd squad than he is playing up front. We have plenty up front to cover for Rooney right now, but we have no one who can pass the ball like him in the middle.

Wasnt he more of a real Cm under Sir Alex? He was in a two man midfield. Yesterday he was helping out the two.

Rooney did a great job in CM and it just shows how much we have been missing that kind of creativity in there. Certainly shows what should be top priority come January. Only problem is will we go from having too few CMs to too many?

Has there been a match compilation or any gifs of the game yesterday? Some of his passes to Valencia were  Scholes would have been proud

I thought for most the game he was playing more or less in the hole, slightly deeper and he came particularly deeper at times in the first few minutes when we needed control but I'd say for the first hour he was playing more or less in the hole. In the last half hour or so he properly dropped and was clearly playing as a 3rd midifelder and tbh I thought he went too deep and we lost thrust and let them push up on us.

I said it in another thread but I think the big change here was more Clev waking up, similarly to Valencia rather than Rooney coming deeper. Clev started playing more ambitous passes, getting his head up and was much more disciplined in his movements. I think it's important for whoever is playing off the striker to help the middle two out but I think it was more important for the likes of Clev to stop being so cautious and sloppy in the middle.

Personally I don't think we should drop Rooney to deep and keep say Clev/Giggs as well, as we did in the last 30 minutes. I just think there that you could drop Clev and then add someone like Kagawa and you'll have the passing range and energy you need in the middle but have a lot more going foward. I mean it'd be contingent on Rooney accepting playing there short term, but think if he is going to have to come deep then there's no point keeping someone like Clev/Giggs as Rooney offers an upgrade on what they're doing anyway unless we really need control.

Plus also contingent on Welbecks form, if he keeps it up Rooney can drop deeper, if he goes back to being as wasteful as he can be then we'll need Rooney leading the line.

I knew he played well when I was at the game, but I didn't realise how well until I watched it back.

Very unselfish display by him once again, and his presence in deeper areas gave Giggs and Cleverley another option in the centre of the park. There was a visible difference in the passing and tempo yesterday, certainly in central areas, and he was key to that in my opinion. When Giggs or Cleverley was on the ball he was dropping deeper into midfield, and there were a few times where he picked the ball up off the back four and allowed Cleverley to push forward into more advanced positions. His overall passing and distribution was brilliant yesterday and as I say, we look much better when we have another man dropping deep offering another option in and around midfield. Playing in that sort of role doesn't limit his freedom to link up with front man either. As I say, he played very well.

Whoever plays in that advanced role needs to look at what Rooney did yesterday. Huge for us.

Until reinforcements come in January, Rooney or Kagawa must operate from deep positions.

It's completely obvious. We can only get away with playing 2 strikers and 2 CM against a few teams at Old Trafford.

I think Kagawa is also capable of playing the role that Rooney played against Villa.

carrick is already 31,32? glad he has signed for another 2 seasons. the way he play his game, he should be fine.

fellaini still got plenty to prove. but his first 3 or 4 months has been very poor indeed. play like a headless chicken everytime he is on the field. even moyes seems to lost confidence in playing him now. phil neville has came out and said fellaini probably need a few good months to settle in, so i'll reserve my judgement on him until the end of the season at least.

fletcher has been out for a year. prior to that he has been out since 2010 or 2011. he is a nice addition when he is fit, but we have to take things slowly for him.

cleverley is a decent 3rd or 4th choice CM imo.

giggs is 40. enough said. even if he stays beyond this summer, he is not going to play every game.

i hope we will sign at least a top class midfielder. and he should be straight into our first eleven. 2 would be better, but oh we should have powell back anytime now.

carrick and the new signing should be first choice. cleverley, powell and fellaini to fight for 3rd, 4th and 5th spot. giggs and fletcher will add up the numbers and back things up with their experience. and remember we can use jones against the big sides as well

Moyes saying he hopes he'll be fit by Christmas. So he's definitely out of the West Ham game.

feck. We can handle just one of rvp and him out, but both? Right as it looks like we might be picking up a tiny bit of form. Hopefully kagawa, Hernandez, welbeck step up in their absence.

That's not what he said. Moyes was asked would Rooney be fit for the festive period and Moyes said he hopes so. The West Ham game would be included in that festive period.

Hmm. The official Twitter account interpreted it as "Christmas". Guess we'll come to know at his Friday press conference anyway.

bloody hell, it's getting ridiculous at the moment.

At least Hernandez and Kagawa have got back, and Nani is back too.

But all that struggling to work well with Rooney and VP as a duo, and now both out, utter sods law.

Carrick, Rooney, Rvp and Rafael all out already at times this season. Doesn't get much worse than that.

All the injuries is food for the critics who says Moyes are driving his players too hard in training. And if this continues for an extended period of time, I'll start believing there's something in it. RVP was fit the entire last season, and now his injuries are back.

So was Carrick, shit happens.

It's just his training methods. The players said its a lot more running and less on the ball hen under sir Alex. He's clearly still stuck on his Everton methods, that's why he brought in their backroom staff, and got rid of the setup we had. Clearly wants us to become a more polished version of his Everton team. Exciting times...

Rooney's best moments against Aston Villa:

Enjoy!

His passes to Valencia in that video are, literally, inch-perfect. I remember when it was happening live, I was gasping. He makes it look so effortless. The accuracy and weight of it all - just fecking hell.

There has been a lot of hype about him this season, I think a lot of it is due to the fact he wanted out in the Summer, his effort is undoubted and there for all to see I just think we haven't seen so much of the natural footballer in him so much as he was shoved right up top, but I have to say I loved his role in the game against villa, his long range passing was immense, Scholes stuff. I think it suits him dropping off, he is more involved and fills his craving to get on the ball, he will still get his share of goals in that role and probably still break records and he is FAR more effective for the team when he drops deeper.

I tend to agree. Rooney, when he plays deeper, runs the game. He adds a body to midfield, a link to attack and can obviously be devastating, attacking wise, himself. I feel a lot more confident that we'll keep the ball and make something happen when he's roaming about, picking up the ball and spreading it about. It's such a shame he doesn't want to be that type of player. Could you imagine how good he could be if he was dedicated to and passionate about becoming that type of player?

You can't really blame Rooney though for not particularly wanting to go back to midfield for the long-term. He'll undoubtedly score less goals, and as a forward, that is what you crave for. He'll want to break records, and he won't be able to break Sir Bobby's record from the midfield.

I bet he isn't injured at all, it seem's more like the old "Rooney isn't playing Wednesday, he needs a rest - let's say he has picked up a niggle so the press can't start the old Rooney dropped and is off in Jan stories".

They were sublime, really. Some of them were to Valencia who had his fullback really close to him as well, but they just floated a few inches above the defender and yet into Valencia's feet. When he's on a good day, his long range passing is really world class, no two ways about it. And tbf, his long range passing is more often than not pretty accurate. But as you put it, it's not only about accuracy, it's about weight and spin as well.

Were people criticising Ferguson's methods when our defense was decimated by injuries at various times over the last few years?

People were questioning Fergie's methods in training. It was said that under Fergie the players would train full blooded in practice games and so on, there were also questions as to the quality of our medical staff. I think that there was a whole thread dedicated to it on here.

We will never know if there is fault at the hands of Moyes or Ferguson regarding the plethora of injuries that the players suffer, we will simply never have access to the relevant information. I guess the only way that we could possibly know is if a new manager came in and significantly reduced the numbers of injuries in a short space of time.
