He set up that chance wonderfully, would have been a great goal had he scored...

His touch was nowhere near as bad as some are making out. There was that one occasion where he miscontrolled a simple pass but that aside he was our 2nd best attacking player behind RVP.

Just don't understand why Rooney would want to leave this club? Makes money, wins trophies and is guaranteed to become a club legend if he stays and he wants to throw it all away. If it's just a case of wanting to try himself out somewhere else then fair enough. Not everyone is Giggs

I think it was because you can tell he wasn't the main man under Sir Alex last season. He was moved around the pitch, clearly being seen as back up to RVP, and in big games was used like Ji-sung Park was. We put him on the right against Madrid to close down Ronaldo, and then left him on the bench for the second game. It's not that surprising that he sort of wanted out if Sir Alex was going to use him like that, because so many other clubs world wide he would be the best player, always starting, the main man. Think Moyes has put Rooney back as the main man and you can tell Rooney is enjoying his football again.

Yeah I think he was decent. Good at best due to his effort. But he should have played a lot better. In fact I thought Kagawa out performed him from the left in the first half. Rooney was also pretty poor infront of goal.

Think you're really underrating him. He held the ball up really well, kept the ball well under pressure many times, had a ridiculous work rate, and his touch was pretty good too for the most part. Wasn't frustrating at all today. Probably a 9/10 performance IMO.

He appears to genuinely loves playing football in the United shirt again. Just hope we sort out his contract before he goes to the World Cup next year

Incredible work rate and intensity today. Moyes deserves credit. Really getting the best out of him.

He was fantastic today, up and down the pitch like a maniac. Its in these big games that he really drives the team on i feel, his desire to win becomes so evident.

His poor touch and passing only seemed late in the game. After the amount he ran and the intensity he played at, it's understandable to have seized up a bit. When you've put in such a slog, touch and passing becomes incredibly hard in the last 5 or 10 minutes. Up until the end, his touch and passing were mostly excellent.

His passing was hit and miss and he was poor infront of goal. Most of the great holdup play came from Van Persie. He worked hard but jones did that better. He was good, but rvp, jones and smalling were far better. Don't get the fuss about his performance today.

He was great today. Whatever the issues he had during the summer, we look a much better team with him in it.

He's still trying that fecking chip, though. Give it up, Wayne. Sturridge beat you to it.

To be fair he spouted off a little bit before the game, but he more than backed it up.

Not really, he made plenty of errors in the first half as well.

Van Persie had great hold up play true, but so did Rooney. Rooney had everything to his game today I thought. I can't really remember him misplacing any passes specifically today, so not sure how his passing was hit and miss. He should have scored that chance yes but that would've topped off his performance, and he really deserved a goal because he was brilliant all around I thought. Didn't give Arsenal's defenders or midfielders time on the ball, basically did the job of two players. There were also some really good bits of control where he played himself out of trouble, like that one time he dribbled around Giroud I think then a quick touch past Ozil in our half close to the end of the game.

The fact that you are literally the only one in this thread who felt he was just decent might point towards something?

One thing that really annoyed me was he kept turning down simple passes in order to beat his man and turn back into trouble. That was a key factor in us giving the ball away loads towards the end.

Other than that can't fault him today.

Played very well today and didn't give the defenders much peace. I think he could make life harder for Arteta at times though, and his first touch is still a bit off. Still, he offers quite a lot and again, he makes an assist.

Maybe you just got your analysis wrong this time?
Maybe, maybe not. I'll probably be watching that game again given the intentional break and how giddy it's made me, so I'll have an opportunity to watch it without nervous taking over my complete existence. But while watching the game, I thought he worked hard as did our entire midfield but just lacked a bit of quality on the night going forward and in front of goal.

Looking at stats Rooney had a better pass completion percentage to Van Persie.

I think it was 11km and only Ramsey had outran him today. That is pretty far considering he is a forward.

I heard this on SKY, it's brilliant, his overall performance and commitment were excellent. Talisman is the word, Arsenal didn't have one equal.

Great fighting performance today. A bit hit and miss on the ball - some instances of dallying about rather than keeping it simple. Should've buried that chance too. But he was fighting relentlessly throughout - and it was a fighting sort of match: Very important contribution from him in that sense.

It wasn't just about desire either. It was a shame he didn't bury his chance, and obviously he had a tough job in the last 10/15 when we had our backs to the wall, but for the most part he was technically the best player on the pitch as well. Showed the sheer range of his abilities - long passing, short passing, running with the ball, beating a man, tackling, pulling the strings. It was all there today.

I'll watch the game again. I didn't see all that much technique from him today. There looked a contrast I'm technical quality between him and rvp today. But I'll see the game again as everyone seems to feel differently.

I often find that the tension of watching a big game live makes me see it completely differently to how it looks after I know the result. I think you'll be impressed with him on second viewing.

There were a few times he tried to knock it past his man and run, only to instead hit it straight at them and leave Arsenal counter-attacking, but overall he was fecking immense.

Clear penalty on him as well.. Giroud goes for the man and not the ball. Look at the contact Giroud makes with both legs.

Definite pen, no doubt Al will conveniently forget this ever happened though next time we get a lucky break against them.

I've been sooo fecking impressed with Rooney this season and I've realized his true ability now. He is captain material to the bone, inspires the crowd and team mates and intimidates opponents with his power and brilliance. I was so stupid to want him to leave after the latest scandal, he truly is one of a kind. I noticed he had a runny nose during the minute's silence, which makes his performance even more impressive.

He provided a beautiful corner and ran with the ball well. He took players on and caused Arsenal problems all game.
