I think the Swansea game and goals by RvP and Hernandez in subsequent games have suddenly impacted people's opinion on Rooney and the season he's having.

Even though the Swansea match came after a run which saw him score 5 goals in 3 games including a brace in the biggest match of the season? I know we have some fruitcakes on here but that would really be something else.

14 games. 7 goals. 7 assists. Truly shite season.

For me, still our most important player.

Difficult to say, I mean, we have seen Rooney at his absolute best in every season. Then, he's really a world top 5 player, unstoppable, and whatever he does on the pitch, he's brilliant.

It is just that he should be able to show that more often, play at the top of his game in 95% of the games and not in 70% or so.
I wish he was like Messi or Ronaldo in that respect, cause he has the tools to be up there somewhere

Aye, this seems fair. He rarely goes a whole season without playing at his best (in fact, his occasional crashes in form last, at the very most, half a season - post WC 2010 being the best example). But since he started playing for us, he's probably only been at or around his best in around 60-70% of matches, and that's the big reason (and a perfectly valid one) why as a player he's not rated as highly as his best form, and why he'll probably be underrated for his whole career. Of course, when he gets one of those runs of ten or so games at his very best, he can win you a league. He utterly transforms the team when he's like that.

His return has been delayed. Out for "another two weeks or so" according to SAF.

Out for two more weeks and will miss Liverpool match.

bad news. as you can add a couple of weeks on that for getting back to form. Makes more sense to leave VP out of the FA Cup game now.

RVP needs to be treated with care now. This period is where our 'Four quality strikers' policy needs to take effect.

Now Rooney is out for a bit, I'm really glad Kagawa is back fit because it gives us options of Kagawa in behind RvP or RvP in behind Chicharito - both have worked fairly well recently.

His season has really been cut short by injuries so far, which is a shame seeing how brilliant he works with RVP. Hope he remains fit for the second hal of the season.

Regarding West Ham and Liverpool, we should cope with RVP, Hernandez, Welbeck, Valencia, Young, Kagawa and even Nani being available. In fact I can't remember the last time only two players were on the injury table :smirk:

When he's back he should be fresh for the second half of the season and able to play most games if fit without needing a rest.

I remember last year RvP got the third round off for Arsenal against Leeds and that gave him around 10 days rest from playing and he kept his form all season, I think Fergie should do the same and give him a complete rest tomorrow so hopefully both him and Rooney are fresh for the run in.

With Rooney on his annual few weeks off, it really is satisfying to see Van Persies name on the team sheet.

Hasn't the story on Rooney changed?

Today the Boss said:

He got a little kick behind his knee and he is still feeling it -- Alex Ferguson, 4 January 2012, link

But before he said:

It was a volley towards the end of training. He did a ligament at the back of his knee and could be out for two to three weeks -- Alex Ferguson, 27 December 2012, link

So is he out because he did a ligament when volleying or because he got a kick..?

Maybe he doesn't know or care about the circumstances of the injury and he's making it up as he goes along because it doesn't suit his public image to be in the dark about it.

According to the whoscored twitter account - Wayne Rooney: Since the start of the 2009/10, Man Utd have won 73.3% of their PL games with Rooney starting, compared to 61.7% without him

So just for the sake of it I had a look at the stats for this season to see if that trend is similar and so far we have won 83.3% of the games he has started this season (10 of 12 games taking 31 points from a possible 36) and we have won 77.7% of the games that he hasn't started (7 of 9 games taking 21 points from a possible 27)

Not a major difference this season but a smaller sample size obviously. Still I think its handy having RvP and Kagawa as good number 10s in his absence.

Don't think he's in the dark I just think he's doing his usual thing of throwing the scent off e.g. Tom Cleverley and Valencia before the Manchester derby.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a fit and fired up Rooney on the team sheet against Liverpool next weekend.

I actually think it's very likely he'll start, yep.

It's not so much being in the dark as something he doesn't need to know. The Doctor comes to him and says Rooney has a knee injury, Ferguson asks how long he'll be out for, the Doctor gives him a prognosis, done. Whether it was a kick or whether it was a ligament stretch isn't really important.

Seems to be picking up these knocks more regularly now

He's picked up these knocks since he was 16-17.
He's an explosive player with a huge amount of power, it's only natural that something goes every now and again.

I'll believe it when I see it. It's generally away to Liverpool that he hasn't performed, so we should all be wanting him to play this one.

I think it's got more to do with the fact we're less reliant on him, he wouldn't have missed so many games this season if we hadn't signed van Persie to take the load off, he'd have been rushed back.

feck!

Hope it's just mind games. Get Rodgers drawing up tactics for Chicharito then BAM, Rooney shows up.

Sad to hear this; I've read numerous times how much both Wayne and Colleen have raised to fight the condition she suffered from and how devoted they were to caring for her :(
