Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

The supposed heartbeat of the team. I think we'd be better off in the long term moving him further forward and bringing in a proper number 10, someone who isn't as streaky in terms of performances as him.

Our worst player today as I see it. A lot of our attacking moves stopped when the ball got to Rooney. 75% passing accuracy and lost 8 out of 10 duels, according to the PL Live app.

How can we expect from anyone in the attack to play well when they have Rooney who can't control the ball in last few games, let alone create something? He can put 10 world class performances in a row, but he'll always have these kind of performances that stops the whole team from creating something. I am really angry with his last few performances.

Was just going to say this. He's not good enough to have a team built around him anymore, we have to muddle through this season and hopefully bring in somebody who can do that no10 job to a world class standard and play Rooney as a striker (or not at all).

He's not a number 10 as simple as that. And because of that he's part of our tactical problems as he's not as good as rvp to be our target man as well. Its also the reason why we keep using that dinosaur 442 system.

Absolutely piss poor as a 10. Doesn't have the touch, the passing or the dribbling. Might be harsh but, after the continual flirtation with Chelsea in the summer, I wish we sold him and got Ozil.

Or just given Kagawa a proper run in the team. Can't be worse than Rooney on current form at least.

Very poor today. Touch of a rapist. Unlucky not to have scored a goal though in the first half. Terrible in the second half and really just not the same player he was 3 years ago.

If we are going to persist with him starting most games I hope that we drop RVP into the hole. He has better off the ball movement and he can still function on an off day.

We have a problem, and that is that two of our best players are strikers. We'd look much more balanced with Kagawa off one of Rooney/Van Persie, but you can't realistically keep one of your best players on the bench each week.

I thought he'd turned the corner a few weeks back, can't remember which game it was but he looked an absolute beast. However the last few performances for us have been dreadful. He looks slow, clumsy, and very mediocre. Probably my fault, he's been shit ever since I put him in my fantasy team

Rooney kicking up a fuss was the opportunity to get rid and progress the team. Sign a couple of midfielder and the team would be infinitely more balanced.

Yet he was extremely unlucky not to score a couple goals. Hit the bar twice today.

Fergie made it easy for Moyes if he wanted to get rid as well. We'll have to see if keeping him has been a good decision by Moyes, but as far as I'm concerned it's one of the reasons why we can't seem to switch our system.

He's probably been our best player this season and one really poor game today and the sell Rooney brigade is back? RvP has done nothing for a while now (yes he scored today) and yet Rooney gets this abuse? Strange

He has been our best player this season but it's been 2 or 3 poor performances in a row now. It's not even his form that's the issue, it's that we're now in a situation where our 2 outstanding players both want to play up front and mean we have to play 4-4-2 or drop one of them. So far this season, Van Persie would be the less deserving of a place in the team (although he's not been helped by Rooney and others not creating much) but Rooney is the one who is being focussed on because he's been the inferior player of the 2 for a couple of years and because we had the opportunity to get a large amount of money for him when he wanted to leave in the summer. His overall contribution this season doesn't merit the criticism but there is a question about what we do if the 2 of them continue to fail to click together.

People talk like we play a rigid 4-4-2. We simply don't play like that. It's more of a 4-2-3-1 away from home anyway.
It's no surprise he was so high up, we were playing at home. The problem isn't the two strikers. It's the players behind them. Mainly today Fellaini. City play Aguero and Negredo and it works fine. It would have been much better with Carrick + Cleverley today.

You know we're in trouble if Rooney's been our best player this season. He only seemed arsed the first few games he was back, probably out of fear the fans might turn on him. That performance against Leverkusen was the best I've seen him play in over a year which had everyone purring over him being back to his best. Then he goes back to his usual inconsistent self.

When 2 strikers are up front, one will always drop deeper and the other go longer. Nobody plays 2 strikers exactly the same distance from the opposition goal because that doesn't work and leaves both alienated up the pitch just like a lone striker.

You always have a Yorke coming shorter than Cole or a Kanoute coming shorter than Fabiano, etc.

Rooney is playing as a striker who comes a bit shorter than RVP

This isn't remotely true at all. He's had three poor games in a row: West Brom, Sunderland, and now Southampton. Against West Brom, there was no fluidity when the ball was at his feet... He tried so many one-touch passes that failed. Kagawa was taken off, just think about that for a minute. Against Sunderland, his contribution was poor. He only really turned up for the last 15 mins to slow things down, but we relied on Januzaj to win us the game. And the less said about today's performance, the better. For a player that's on his wages, he needs to show more consistency. His touch has really been horrible lately.

His 'form' (inconsistent form at that) has come at the cost of our midfield being even more over-run and struggling with the ball than last year though.

Even if his individual form had been particularly great, which I don't agree with anyway, you still couldn't be sure that it was worth it.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. There's no pleasing some here! We were overrun in the midfield and you should have seen how many time Rooney was there to support. even RvP was when 'leading the line' was playing on the final 3rd line. His short passing was horrendous and gave away the ball too many times, though. Not one of his better efforts, but writing him off after one bad game is just silly!

Rooney's self-confessed selfishness is harming the team imo.

We are basically having to play with two out and out centre forwards. Take Giggs out of that picture above and it's so fecking obvious that the distance between Carrick-Fellaini and Rooney and Robin is far far too big.

Rooney should be operating in that space in behind, linking the play between the midfield and the striker, when for his own selfish reasons he's playing pretty much as high up as Robin. It's hardly like we have an impenetrable midfield behind the strikers who are solid and don't need any support. It's quite the opposite, our midfield is susceptible to being overrun and Rooney isn't willing to drop enough. It's so frustrating to watch.

Rooney is basically dictating where he will and won't play which isn't fair on Moyes. We can't change the team shape because we have to play two strikers. When Moyes took Rooney off we switched to a 4-3-3, he can't do that with Rooney on the pitch because he would probably throw a tantrum if he had to play on the wing.

His first touch yesterday was horrific and I thought he should have been subbed off earlier than he was but I'm sure Moyes doesn't want to risk upsetting him.

No. Just dam if he doesn't! It wasn't like this was his first bad game of the season. He's had 3 poor games in a row now.

Rooney's form for United this season is verging on overrated now. His performances during the international break were miles better than what he's served up for us of late. Rooney would have been hauled off after 60 minutes last season...

Excellent post.

Where do you get those positions maps from? I use the ones on Whoscored and if you compare ours with Chelsea and Arsenal this weekend, the distance between midfield and forwards is pretty much the same. Having two midfielders who spend most of the game on the half way line is pretty common. The main differences are Carrick Fellaini are far too close to each other. Secondly, Arsenal, City and Chelsea played much more narrow with their wide players coming inside. Everything is through the middle. None of them use traditional wingers anymore.

Not sure how much we can read into things using those.

Dead right! If we had more mobile CM who would be willing and able to carry the ball forwards and bridge the gap then maybe he could play further forward but we don't and Wayne is not dropping back and playing the link role and the midfield is being isolated. He is doing what he wants and it's not helping!

When you look at the Rooney situation as a whole, I'd say it's clear that he has the World Cup in mind.

Think it'll be for the best if we part ways next summer.

He certainly seems to have his own agenda. What irks me is that Zaha,Hernandez and Kagawa all want to play for us and will certainly leave if they are continuously overlooked whilst Wayne is thinking about anything other than a United future and I will say this now, there will be a written request handed in in the summer and we'll like fecking idiots for supporting him.I don't want a player of Rooneys quality to leave but i never wated Ruud to leave either.Trouble is Ferguson had a plan for the future and I don't think Moyes has a clue right now!
