What players? When is the last time you saw a performance like that?
Since Ronaldo left, well first of all Rooney has played well since then believe it or not, I don't understand how tonight confirmed anything. Other players, first up, I will go Scholes, just a pleasure to watch. The likes of Rio and Vidic have been rocks for years, they don't get the flashy headlines Ronaldo did but I appreciate their roles just as much. Carrick was amazing last season, the likes of RVP, one of the greatest strikers in the world has been great to watch since his time at United.

I would pay to watch so many of the United players, past a present. That takes nothing away from Ronaldo or Rooney it's just I don't see how Rooney's performance tonight was the best since Ronaldo left.

I did not say that, I said that since Ronaldo left there has not been a player that I would gladly pay to watch. Rooney did it for me tonight. Bums on seats, excitement.

You wouldn't pay to watch Scholes? Vidic? Carrick? RVP?

He is far from simple, misguided maybe. On the pitch he is an excellent captain. Led by example tonight.

I far from hate the guy, but he is a bit simple. If he was more eloquent of speech and charismatic he'd be perfect for it. A no brainer even at 24/25. Hell I have no problems with him getting the arm band now if he's going to 'lead by example'.

No slight on him, I just think that he's been held back from the arm-band a little bit by Fergie and there is probably a reason. My money is on the fact that he is a little bit simple (or so it appears).

Not since Ronaldo left have we had a player that you would gladly pay to watch. Tonight, Rooney became that player. Aggressive, pinpoint passing, running, commitment. A joy to watch, and when he continues to get better then he will be scary.

Our captain (something Ronaldo could never be).
What the hell is Van Persie then?

All special players, especially Scholes. I just thought that Rooney was special tonight, if he can keep this level of form then he is a nightmare for any team to deal with. We have not seen this from him for years.

Seems like he has come out this season with something to prove again and has that drive. Hopefully it continues throughout the season, and he keeps up this level of performances.

He seems to have been working on his freekicks as well, seems to be really dangerous with them right now.

Look he did well tonight, but people (Livewire mainly) are going overboard.

Keane against Juventus this was not.

Never mentioned Juve mate, he has just put in two man of the match performances against Shitty and Pool, not Norwich and Newcastle. Rooney is on fire now, and hopefully, like Keane he becomes our captain.

I'd take Scholes over him, for a start.

Rooney, no offence to Scholes has made a bigger impact for club and country. Scholes' personality on the pitch was a little too timid.

He's in the form of his bloody life, and it's all in preparation for his move to Chelsea.

Is he? He is playing well can get a little better imo but that only happens if the others improve, the form of his life for me was when he upfront scoring goals for fun 09/10 season or the second half of the 10/11 season when his resurgence helped us win the league. Those were two sustained periods were the game just came easy to him.

He's been fantastic this season. Sadly though I think he realized that not enough top clubs were in for him this summer because of a bad year so he wants to have a good season to get a transfer to somewhere like Madrid.
That's just what I'm guessing the reason he's so fired up is. As great as he is, and I've always loved him as a player, I do think he still plans to leave next summer.

How can anyone in the position Rooney plays ever replicate that performance from Keane?

For a striker, I can't think of anyone able to dominate a game the way Rooney does when he's at his best. He's a special player. Shame he's a disloyal twat.

He seems to have gained a yard of pace too.

Yep. It's like he's been doing a Rip van Winkle, and then woke up.

I've spent so many years bemoaning the loss of the dynamic young Rooney that his resurrection came as a shock! For the first time in a long time you can see the player that Fergie thought could become BPITW.

It's a bit strange giving him the armband though. Not that I'm against anything that gets the best out of Wayne, but giving the captaincy to a player who twice wanted out of the club in three years?

He seems his old self, again. Giving him the arm band ahead of Giggs was a great idea. The amount of running and pressing he did last night was excellent. He was even shouting instructions to his team mates, arguing with opposition players, and the referee.

Welcome back, PM

great performance and great run of form for him. shows what a pro he is really. all that other stuff and he still gives 100%.
time to put the summer antics behind, realise what a gem we have in Rooney and hope he signs a new contract. hard to see how anyone who wants the best for United would want any other outcome. You dont have to love him, just appreciate his worth

Still proving to be the best business of the summer. Not selling him to Chelsea has kept us in the hunt.

It's obvious he wants Rooney to feel loved, so he'll sign a new contract. Wazza's a simple soul after all. If Fergie did it he'd be hailed as a great man manager. No doubt some will spin it as a sign of moyes being weak.

Yup, said it last week, it's all he wants, the simpleton.

Immense again last night, I'll keep saying it, our best player when on form.

His fitness level is the best I've seen in ages. Expected him to be professional about staying after the window shut and thus far he's been just that. Looks like he really is enjoying his football right now. Fair play to him.

fecking hell, he can't win

He couldn't be arsed last year, I think that's pretty obvious from his performances so far. He's already had more good games this season than the whole of last. If he's still hellbent on leaving then hopefully this gets Madrid and Barca interested and he goes there at the end of the season. Madrid love their summer blockbuster buys. Will be interesting to see if he maintains this form as he started just as well in 2010/11 (or might have been 11/12) before falling off.

Moyes is dealing with the situation very, very well. I liked the Moyes appointment anyway, but the fact that he's known Rooney since he was a kid is a big thing for me, I think he knows him pretty well deep down and knows how to handle him.

As for Rooney himself, during the summer I chuckled at all the "past it at the top level" "he's on the decline" and other comments, it was obvious last year was a poor one by his standards (and even then, it wasn't half as bad as it's being made out to be) and that he could do well again with the right motivation. He's in his prime, and it's showing. Exceptional player, hope these performances carry on.

For all his transgressions I don't think anyone can question his dedication to the team at the moment. Great to see.

Moyes deserves a lot of credit for the way he has dealt with the Rooney situation - I didnt really agree with giving him the captaincy but if it results in him upping his game then fair enough

now the moaning scouse cnut better sign a new bloody contract

Aye, it's amazing what a bit of conditioning work can do. Really speaks ill of his efforts over the last year or so, in my opinion.

I think he's wanted a change of scenery for a few years and it affected his motivation to put in the extra work. After Ronaldo left he had an oppurtunity to be our main man and lead from the front which he worked hard off the pitch and performed very well on it. Since then I think his motivation has waned. And so has his game naturally.

From his point of view I don't think he had the best relationship with Fergie, he's won it all at United and he's never been a United fan, it wouldn't bother him in the slightest who he won trophies with imho just as long as he was. And he was excited by the thought of playing under Mourinho. I genuinely don't think its ever had anything to do with the money.

I think his motivation has stemmed from a few sources this season and has upped his game massively, i'd include getting fit for a possible move, enjoying playing under a new manager at Man Utd, having points to prove about his game and maybe even aiming to be player of the year. If he felt he he was becoming a bit stale at Man Utd then hopefully David Moyes can reignite his passion and get him enjoying his football here again. Then he might stay.

I would say at least two! He's back to being a fast player. Last year he was truly sluggish. I remember Hernandez being asked if he was the fastest player and he mentioned Valencia and Rooney, but they had never had a race; I raised my eyebrow at the mention of Rooney, but he covers ground quickly these days and looks back to his explosive self.

My view of him now: Terrific player, but sell him - too much drama, quickly becoming bigger than the club by playing as captain yet has not said he wants to stay - everything is handed to him! Again, brilliant player these days, but it's not worth it, imo.
