I don't understand how anyone can brand yesterdays performance as 'superb', 'magnificent' or whatever. He scored a good free kick in the dying moments of the game.. besides that he spent his time playing the odd cross field ball, getting bullied by Kompany and looking bereft of ideas in the final third, like the rest of our team.

He was our best player yesterday, but that isn't saying much.

Every game he has played this season he has been our best player, and that would be hard to argue with. Doesn't mean he has been world class every game, but he has been a level above most, if not all of the others.

After a lot of people questioning how committed he looked at the beginning, I wish people could now shut the feck up and see he is fighting for our team, and whether he wants to still be here or not shouldnt matter for now. He's still a top top striker and without him we are a level down.

Those who say he's been superb do so because he actually moved, with and without the ball, a lot. No one else wearing a red shirt tried that approach so he stood out.

I was all for Rooney leaving because he wanted to. If he wishes to stay, then all good.

I think Rooney was the best player on the pitch in the second half against City. I am very pleased with how he is playing, and once we get him and Persie up and running, they will be a force.

Rooney has a great ability to learn new skills relatively late in his career. He went years without being a threat in the air then scored a tonne of headers. Now he seems to be on the point of mastering free-kicks. I'm starting to expect him to test the keeper every time he steps up now. Reminiscent of Beckham.

Different angle. There's another angle that shows how high it goes over the wall and then dips into the net.

Jesus what a strike! That's the first time I've seen it.

Such a great footballing talent, arguably the best England have had in the last 20-30 years, he has had a great career which is still somewhat unfulfilled.

He even tried a "ronaldo chop" at the beginning of the city game too!

That's my favourite freekick I've seen for a while - no idea why. It's just perfect. Deserved more than being a consolation goal.

Looked so cool how he just walked away after the freekick though. That's all he could have done I know because the score, but it was so nonchalant

Still a fair few ropey touches but he really is looking inspired at the moment. Got that fire in his belly.

I've been utterly impressed with Rooney lately, long may it continue!

Is it too early to ask his detractors to sod off? I hope his form isn't patchy this season and he performs like this until May.

He's become really dangerous with free kicks now. Just give them all to him now!

I loved how, in the 85th (?) minute, he chased back a seemingly lost cause when he was a fully twenty yards behind Gerrard well inside the Liverpool half. Gerrard fizzes the ball forward and the camera pans away following the flight of the ball. Evans/Buttner disrupts the Liverpool attack, and who is on hand to make himself available for the pass forward? Rooney, who had eaten up the initial ground between himself and Gerrard, and was now twenty yards inside our own half. All this in the space of maybe ten seconds.

That's the Rooney, along with his attacking instincts, that we've missed for so long. Excellent to see. Once again, our stand-out performer tonight. He's been a revelation to date this season, and I must say, being a vocal opponent of his behaviour over the summer, I'll admit I was very wrong to want him sold.

What a talent.

He took control of the end of the match for us, his experienced showed. An excellent all round performance.

So good to see him play like he is at the moment, he's top 5 in the world if he maintains this sort of form for the season.

Can't speak highly enough of Rooney this season. He has been fantastic considering everything that has happened.

I've read this about 9 times.. I still don't get it... Sounds like he had a great game though - Long may it continue.

Strange move to give him the captains armband over Giggs. Don't like it but if it's part of what Moyes is doing to get the best from him then fair play. The way he's handled Rooney has been the most pleasing aspect of Moyes' work so far.

Not since Ronaldo left have we had a player that you would gladly pay to watch. Tonight, Rooney became that player. Aggressive, pinpoint passing, running, commitment. A joy to watch, and when he continues to get better then he will be scary.

Our captain (something Ronaldo could never be).

While I am a massive Rooney. We have had numerous players of the calibre since Ronaldo left and certainly tonight Rooney didn't do anything he hasn't done before.

If he wasn't a bit simple he'd have had the arm band a few years ago.

Past his best? not a bit of it.

Great to see the twat light up Old Trafford again. He's looking like that player we used to say we couldn't cope without a few seasons back.
