Incredible football really, considering we were talking about the Rooney +10m for Mata deal a few short weeks ago. Startling turnaround. Mata can't even start for a team that's 6th so he's shit!

Seriously though, the experience of a 3x CL finalist was lost on here with many, even cutting through his dickheadedness

I'd swap him instantly for Mata, younger, more consistent in his form and would be nice having a footballer who is not thinking of running his contract down to get the feck out of the club.

what a prick. hard to think on your feet and all but its quite clear he still has a chip on his shoulder through some misguided notion the club wronged him. he wasnt playing well enough for the team last year and van persie was, simple as.

Yes but actually that might not actually be the initial problem, the initial problem was revealing the verbal transfer request in public rather than simply asking him if he wanted to leave to make it official and then making it public if he did.

Feel he will leave before his contract is up,but for now he will knuckle down and do his job.

He acknowledged the fans though, which was fair enough.

Unrealistic I know but I had hoped he might do that of his own accord as a way of deflecting the 'are you happy' questions. Respond with a 'concentrating on my football and great to hear the fans in good voice tonight' or something. As it was he said the right things, but only when asked directly about the fans response, when clearly he can't really say anything else.

I know it's a bit nitpicky, just in the context of the interview would have been great if he'd acknowledged the fans just of his own accord, given that they have been very forgiving to him.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney:

"I am very proud to get my 200th Manchester United goal. I am delighted to be back playing.
"It is a good result, as the first game in the Champions League is so important.
"I am concentrating on my football, I have got my head down and worked hard. I am delighted with the way I have come back.
"The fans have been brilliant. It is great the reception I get here.
"Hopefully I can repay them with those type of performances.
"It is a big learning curve for the manager. Tonight was all about getting the win.
"It has gone quickly my time here. I am really pleased to score 200 goals for a club like Manchester United, it is a great honour."

He won't be happy until he signs his new contract. I was more miffed by his answer to the Moyes question, saying it's a learning curve for him and we conceded sloppy goals, suggesting we conceded sloppy goals because of David Moyes' inexperience.

He did take to Facebook after being quiet for a spell to acknowledge the fans after the Chelsea game though.

well if we take it right back the initial problem was wayne rooney releasing a public statement that questioned our ambition, in doing so questioning the ambition of an absolute god of football. so feck rooney and his sensitive nature. he was stropping around for months before that happened and was playing rubbish after christmas.

there is no argument that can be made in his favour other than him being a great player. amazing that hitting 200 goals is such an anti climax.

Is it just me that thinks he's a total dick for not just saying he's happy being a United player?

Is it a lot to ask?

We may not like it but for whatever reasons, he does not want to be at our club and has made no secret about it. Why should he lie?

I want him to stay, am sad that he has fallen out of love with the club, but it is what it is. Credit to him for not letting that personal feeling affect his professional performances.

I dont have any problem him not giving love proclamations to Manchester United if he does not feel it.

Or maybe ferguson was fed up dealing with this shit again after the INITIAL initial problem: that the cnut already tried to leave once, embarrassing the club, manager and players by saying we aren't ambitious enough for him.

A mad Rooney with a point to prove is a good Rooney.

He may leave next summer, but transferring his pissed off energy onto the field can only be good for us. Enjoy it and celebrate it whilst it lasts. I have no beef with him.

It was a PR answer. If he'd admitted to being unhappy over the Summer, the papers would have had a field day. If he said he'd been happy all along, everybody would have known he was lying and he would have come across badly.

He basically said nothing of any note, but the fact he sounded irritated by the way the reporter asked his questions means that people are reading more into it than it deserves.

It's a bit of shame really that he's clearly not happy with something at the club.

That interview is all the proof you need things are still up in the air behind closed doors.

Hope it gets sorted.

He won it himself and beat the keeper so it's forgiveable. Anyone else see that happening as soon as he chose not to pass to van Persie? The thing is it sort of seemed like he was trying to cross it to van Persie in the end rather than dragging his shot. If so it was seriously stupid.

Good to have him back though. Looks like he's continuing that trend of bringing his best form not long after wanting to leave. Wonder what that's about?

I had a feeling he will miss it, but after rewatching it, I think that wasn't a shoot either, and that he wanted to pass the ball to van Persie in the end after all, judging by his face direction after.

I realise now my comment was a little naïve. It really never occurred to me that someone couldn't be happy playing consistently as a key performer for Manchester United, whilst earning millions.

Of course, if he isn't happy, he shouldn't lie.

Ah I didn't see that, that's something I suppose. Not really a fan of his, but as others have said, as long as he's doing his best for the team and it isn't distracting other players, I suppose the other stuff is irrelevant.

I think it's fair to say an unhappy Rooney in the past nearly always looked like a lad that just didn't give a shit so if we were to maybe go by his form and attitude on the pitch now the chances of whatever it is that's rumbling in the background getting sorted out over the coarse of the season under Moyes might be high enough. Whether or not we have any silverware to show at the end of the season could be a huge factor too. Either way if he keeps scoring goals and setting them up there isn't much point in us getting worked up about it now.

How do people seeing this play out?

Do we need to go through this shite again? Just sit back and watch and let it happen. Speculation as we've seen from gimpy caf fans turns into a drama fueled rage of bollocks making a fool of themselves.

Anyone posted this yet?

I'd agree, but it's a rather unique situation for United.

I think he will have a great season with us, get plenty of offers in the summer .... and then stay. Once he is within touching distance of SBC record, that will be a huge carrot.

But we will have to break our wage record to keep him. And Moyes will have to add 2 world class players in non competing positions to give him the real chance for further Champions League glory. SAF will also have to offer an olive branch behind the scenes and repair the relationship. Perhaps also via a glowing eulogy in his upcoming book. The deal will be done after the world cup next summer.

Personally I think all that trouble is worth it. Rooney on form, like tonight is priceless .... read Ibrahimovich's recent interview.

Thats my guess.

I don't know anything about his inner feelings and neither does anyone on this board. What I can tell though, is that his answer to the question was clearly rehearsed and therefore not necessarily indicative of the truth.

Rooney still hasn't revealed anything to anyone and his advisers will make sure that he doesn't either.

That still doesn't excuse making a private issue public even if the player has been stupid and unprofessional in doing so previously the club and manager still have to be bigger than that. They should simply have called Rooney's bluff, "if you want to leave put in an official transfer request". In the minewhile if he takes an unprofessional approach to training or issues around the club fine him till he learns his lesson.

Making the verbal request public only serves the purpose of feeding the media machine which is largely unhelpful.

Last time we had a clear the air interview on MUTV and jubilant badge kissing in the FA cup win against City. This time nothing other than Rooney being quite aggressive on the matter and still non committal.

I thought it would have been cleared up.

Didnt United state in the summer they had no plans to offer him a new one?

Two wrongs don't make a right, SAF shouldn't have even broken his stride whilst asking him to make the request official. However we should never have made a verbal request public, an official request is something we would have been perfectly entitled to make public.

He still doesnt want to be here, that much is obvious. Not from on the pitch where hes playing really well. But from the fact he could easily put this to bed for most people just by saying he wants to stay. Most people are so desperate to hear that, it'll be the end of the issue for them especially if he continues playing well and scoring goals. But even if he does finally say he wants to stay, he did that last time too and still asked to leave again.

This summer will definitely be the hottest part of this drama because of his contract situation, the club and a lot of fans are keen to sweep it under the rug but this could still get very nasty, very fast. And I think people should just remember that and not set themselves up for a fall by wanting to believe it'll all work itself out like a fairytail just because we didn't let him leave this summer. But if it does somehow transpire in the form of a fairytail, he announces he's staying, signs a new deal for an extended period of time without getting a payday, I think Rooney just about has one last chance to fix the way he's remembered at the club. And his current form is a good start on that

Didnt United state in the summer they had no plans to offer him a new one?

I think they meant this summer and/or an immediate one to put his future at rest. We also said we arent afraid to let Rooney run his contract right down
