The guardian can feck off, the amount we pay him we can expect him to do whatever it takes to be ready for our games before England are even concidered, correct decision by utd and Rooney.

Now this apprpach is very likrly what took placelast week, to readily pretend that things are otherwise is at best rather generous to Wayne.

Of course a stronger manager than Roy would respond to that appropriately however England are not so blessed in that department.

Having listened to a few podcasts the press pack don't seem too bothered so it will go down as a minor footmote untilthete is reason to bring it up again i expect

Fergie would always do what's best for the club. He more than anyone knew that he wouldn't likely be around for another five years as the boss so the Rooney situation may have influenced things, it's not completely unreasonable. Yes, there is plenty of history of Fergie fecking off players but the majority of those were past it. Stam is the exception and Fergie admits he got that one wrong. With what we know about Fergie, we can be certain that weighed heavily on his thinking with Rooney.

There really won't be any one compelling reason why Fergie stepped aside when he did but age mellows men and I think there's something to the idea that him staying on as manager and losing Rooney was not something he wanted to contemplate, knowing where he'd likely end up and the extra motivation Rooney would have with Fergie still at the helm. A good time to retire, a nice parting clip round the ears for Wayne and a chance for the club to keep their heartbeat.

Didn't it come out that he was planning to retire last year if we won the league? Something about wanting to spend more time with his wife as her sister passed away? If true, that throws your theory out as that occured well before the issues with Rooney.

To be honest, I doubt an individual as driven as Sir Alex would ever quit for anything other than personal reasons.

Never heard of it, any links to that story? Anyway, it's not a theory just something I wondered about. I found Fergie's retirment to be a shocking development, I always though he'd die in the dugout.

I'll try to link it if I can find it later. Basically, the story was that he planned to retire in 2012, but the way we lost the league changed his mind as he wanted to go out a winner. Spoke to his wife, told her 1 more year. That's why he focused so much on the league last season..

i thought he would never retire too.:(

There was......plus maybe he was approaching 72.

Fergie:
"I decided at Christmas,'' he said. "Cathy's [Ferguson's wife] sister died. She had lost her best friend and she has been isolated. For 47 years she has been the leader of the family. She has made a lot of sacrifices for me.''

.....

He regrets doing it with Stam, probably the only player who at the time of their departure still had plenty to offer the club. Rooney still has plenty to offer and there are only two clubs that he could turn up at, City and Chelsea.

Rooney is not Messi or Ronaldo. United have lost a better player and have still remained competitive.

Yeah, I doubt it was the primary reason but I wonder if it had any influence. Fergie was starting to come in for criticism that he behaving as if he were bigger than the club. Seems a noble way to go out and a perfect riposte to such criticism if so.

Only criticism of Fergie from fans is maybe not strengthening in midfield. That specific criticism, in bold, may have come came from the media but I'm sure it was not the fans saying this.
Can you be a bit more specific?

Definitely think age had the most to do with it but there are plenty of factors that age will consider beyond the simple number.

I was firmly in the camp that believed we'd be fine without Rooney, then I watched our preseason.

The criticism comment was probably more to do with things I've read on here, in the newbies and in the comment sections of various English papers. It's not something I believed but there were always a few nutters who would imply as much. 'Starting' was probably a bad choice of words 'occasionally' would likely have been a better choice and to be honest it was likely from muppets who were made we didn't sign supposed midfield superstars the last five years.

As for the Fegire quote about his decision, let's just say if he had me over for dinner and told me we were having pasta....I love the man but he keeps his cards very close to his chest.

Been very good this first half - our best player out there. Still has some heavy touches, but looks to create and dares to take on a player again. Scores a goal and works his arse off - looks fitter!

He wasn't half as good against Palace as he was tonight in first half. I understand why he got MOTM in last game, most of our players had an off game, but I don't think he was that impressive in last game at all, especially if you compare it to his tonight's, he is flying.

He's way past his best and we missed a trick not getting shot of the prick while we had a chance.

Brilliant from Rooney for Valencias goal!

I'm hoping for his best ever season in a Utd shirt this term.

So, I guess we're not interested in swapping him for Mata then no?

He was outstanding tonight. I never necessarily thought he was past it but had serious reservations about whether he'd be motivated to get himself back to top form for United. I have to say that so far his attitude and performances have been absolutely terrific, long may it continue!

Superb performance, looking fit determined and letting his quality do the talking, seems to be enjoying having a solid midfield pair behind him. City will dread facing him in this form.

Whoops. That was fecking atrocious.

He won it himself and beat the keeper so it's forgiveable. Anyone else see that happening as soon as he chose not to pass to van Persie? The thing is it sort of seemed like he was trying to cross it to van Persie in the end rather than dragging his shot. If so it was seriously stupid.

Good to have him back though. Looks like he's continuing that trend of bringing his best form not long after wanting to leave. Wonder what that's about?

Excellent performance. All that critics like me wanted from him. :)

3 goals and 3 assists this season. Scoring and creating... not bad for someone who people think doesn't suit the number 10 position. Glad he came back for the Palace game and now has momentum going into the City game.

Incredible football really, considering we were talking about the Rooney +10m for Mata deal a few short weeks ago. Startling turnaround. Mata can't even start for a team that's 6th so he's shit!

Seriously though, the experience of a 3x CL finalist was lost on here with many, even cutting through his dickheadedness

Top performance.

If he can keep this up for most of the season, he's as good as anyone not called Messi or Ronaldo. That's why we fought to keep him.

"Listen I just told you...." He looked like he wanted to knock him the feck out.
