Rooney is starting the game at United, at a particularly unstable time for the club with the changeover of manager.
Yeah, but he isn't is he? His tactics were far worse in 2010, this is somewhat subtle compared to then. Roy Keane did it with Juventus and we ended up smashing our wage structure for him, Rio Ferdinand did it with Chelsea, what Rooney is doing really isn't anything new, him and his advisors are just more aggressive in their tactics.

I think the best thing for everyone is for Rooney to simply concentrate on his football, feck everything else.

Here's the Post Match interview everyone's talking about.

I'm not sure why people are up in arms over this interview. I haven't read other posts in this thread so forgive me if I'm repeating, but it seemed like Rooney is pissed off more at the incessant British media than anything else. I dunno...just my hunch

He looks great too. Lbs of weight off him and he seems very focused. Only a good thing

Yeah I think there's an element of that. He's not given them a single quote all summer in response to any of the stories or angles they've come up with.

All he does is refuse to bite when questioned directly about you-know-what. Hardly surprising. What could he say? "No, I never asked to leave and Fergie is a cnut for saying I did." Not bloody likely. Given the form of the questions I don't see what else he can say, really.

Yup, mainly because he's probably had a very good word in his ear, he's growing up and he's fully aware that the media are fecking leeches who will do anything to be paid their weekly wage. This includes specific questions that are designed to get someone to divulge enough information so that the papers have a field day.

I wouldn't be surprised even from that interview if the papers are all about Rooney leaving tomorrow. They'll try anything

He's way past his best and we missed a trick not getting shot of the prick while we had a chance.
Such a weird post from a usually sensible poster. 1. Most people don't want rid because of his abilities. 2. Nobody denies that he's capable of terrific games and spells, it's his inconsistency that's arguably annoying.

I'm not trying to be deliberately inflammatory but why did the interviewer have a need to ask basically the same question twice? It was such an obvious case of headline hunting and well played to Wayne for handling that.

Imagine trying to play football and being hassled by every cnut under the sun about your football all the time. Opening papers reading lies and such. It would be rather disheartening. Fair play to him, he handled that in what looked like an off the cuff manner. Who cares if he says he's happy or not or if the fans think they are owed some form of clarification on the situation.

You just get the feeling if he was a little bit more articulate and no offense to him maybe a little less thick that he'd be the captain and a legend outside of the walls regardless of all the drama. It's obvious he has an excellent football brain and the drive and determination to lead.

But surely they are owed some clarification?

Why? He plays football for Manchester United and if he has any problem with that then it's surely up to them to sort it out? He's even thanked the fans for his support. Just seems a bit weird to be on the verge of castrating themselves wanting their own personal resolution to how he's feeling.

If he answers the question and says openly that he asked for a transfer, then he ruins his relationship with the fans and makes signing a new contract with the club very difficult.

If he answers the question and says that he didn't ask for a transfer, then he picks a fight with Sir Alex and makes contract negotiations more difficult.

The reality is that he wants to get paid, and he has an agent who is instructing him to do everything to force the club to pay him what he is worth.

But personally I think that if he were speaking openly about what happened in the summer, then there would be no chance of his signing a new contract with the club. The fact that he is keeping it close to the chest indicates that Rooney is happy to stay at the club---for the right price.

And, let's be honest, while we would like players to all be like Paul Scholes and to not use an agent and to love their club, the reality is that players only get a certain number of contracts in their career. A serious injury could turn off the flow of cash at any time, and why shouldn't a player make as much money as he can. Being a loyal soldier might mean making less money, and a player might ask themselves how that is fair.

I think Rooney wants all the money his evil agent can get him, and he wants all the plaudits of an adoring public. The truth is that he will never be loved like a Scholes or a Solskjaer, sadly, but I'm sure he can live with that.

Classic use of the word "listen". :)

In some ways saying the right things about being proud to score so many for United (and this is what stood out in the written quotes I saw), but then the sheer awkwardness of not wanting to say he's pleased to be here etc.

It's easier just to focus on the football sometimes. He's here until Jan at least, and it looks like he's actually playing in goal scoring situations now unlike loads of last year

Yet again dodging the question, he had a prime opportunity to finally come out and say, I am happy at United and want to be here but again he failed to do that.

His ability is the only reason he is still tolerated by some of the fans, any other player and he would of been sold and packed off long ago.

Until he signs the new contract he will be very ambiguous and cryptic in is interviews. As long as he performs whilst he is on the pitch is what matters at present.

Personally I believe he still wants to go, but I have to admit he has proved me wrong in behaving so professionally about it, being fitter than any start of the season I can remember and playing some sublime football. Kudos for that and if he does leave next summer and plays like this all season I'd hope he goes with a fair enough and thanks from the supporters.

Seriously delusional !!!! Let me break it down into details.

Dodging the question - Maybe he was silent because he did not ask for transfer and also did not want to pick a war with Fergie. When both answers to a question lead into trouble, it is always better to stay silent.
Payment - Everyone is here for payment. What % of footballers (United and outside) do you know who have taken a pay cut just to 'stay in the club they love'.
Agent - Geroge Best had a agent and so did Denis Law. Are they any less for that? What is your point here? Yes, one club players are unique, but that does not mean that others are inferior.

You are quoting minority to disprove the majority!

Wayne Rooney has ensured that even if he breaks Charlton's record he'll never be revered in the same way as other United greats. My personal opinion is, if he leaves in January or the summer then thanks and good luck, we'll move on. We've lost great players before and we've always pushed on. But for as long as he is here, be it until January or the summer or even the end of his career I'll be happy as long as he puts in a shift each game like he did last season. If he retires with us, having broken our all time goal scoring record, then great. As long as he's here I want him scoring goals and playing well, but he won't be a player I'll be too sorry to see go, if he leaves.

Seems like he has his confidence to take on players back again, after it being missing from his game since his second season.
Yep, he tried quite a few runs at the defence, not all came off, but it's great that he's confident enough to do it. He also pulled off a great nutmeg at the edge of the box where the defender just managed to get back and tackle it out of play for a corner, had he gotten back on the ball, probably could've squared up a goalscoring opportunity.

Was really excellent tonight, so happy to see him in this kind of form. He was brilliant in the first game against City last season, I hope he does it again on Sunday!

I generally with you, just that I think it's possible to see him sold in January.

The first touch for his second goal is fecking difficult. He made it look like a sidefooted three-yard pass.

Yeah, I don't think he's happy, so I can see him going next chance he gets. That being said, if he is banging in goals between now and Christmas we'd be mad to let him go unless we can bring in someone quality.

Am I the only one who found his interview quite funny?

"Listen, right, I've already told you" - you could almost hear the 'dickhead' after 'listen'.

If he keeps being played and keeps playing well, he'll be happy enough and probably sign a new deal. If he still can't settle and ends up leaving then fine, feck him, so long as he goes abroad I don't care.

It has been long since I've seen such a high level sustained performance like that from Rooney, that I honestly forgot he was capable of suck things. If this is a glimpse of what he will offer for us the rest of the season, then we are in for a treat. I'm not even arsed whether he is happy or not tbh, just so long he keeps up the performances like that.

He'd be cup-tied in Europe in January. If both parties can't agree on a contract extension it's going to be next summer.

I genuinely think that all of his functional brain cells went into the footballing part on the brain, and the rest is just of a basic animal, like a dog, that just needs to feel loved by its owners in order to be happy and play fetch to the best of its capacity.

Bastard - that made me chuckle, and I'm at work!

I see this all the time, it's like people really think they only form of communication in football is via the media.

If Rooney wants a bigger contract the chances are he will get one no matter what he says in front of camera.

You really believe that? So if Rooney said he was happy last night you honestly don't think it would have given the club any advantage at all in the negotiations? Surely by him saying nothing he's just strengthening his own position? It's the same in every day life imo.

Very impressed with how alive he has looked so far, it's very encouraging. He's taking people on, trying things, scoring goals and assisting, can't ask for more, just for him to keep it up.

If all he is after is a new contract, surely he'd have been given one, is it not easier to just open negotiations. It's not likely that we'd let someone so important slip into his last year of contract. I know he's poorly advised but surely you'd have to a special kind of idiot to tell him to make out you want to leave, piss all the fans off and try make a cock out of Fergie in order to try and get a new contract?
