It's off and back on in the space of two Jose interviews.

Very smart on his behalf. Leave ball firmly in Rooneys court.

"He told someone very important in his career"

I think he's implying Stretford but it could actually be Fergie. Saw this somewhere on Twitter and it does make sense. He's playing games as usual.

Jose corroborating the Fergie line on matters.

From Chelea's PoV they probably wouldn't mind seeing a more open sign of his wishes [like with an OTR], particulalry if they might need to go offer a deal worth £40-50m to stand a chance of getting him.

We would definitely get more than £18million next season, wouldn't surprise me at all if it was pushing £30million. If a few clubs are interested the time left on his contract isn't particularly relevant. Hopefully PSG or Madrid are in for him along with Chelsea

Actually you might be right. I was thinking about all the players who have recently had a year on their deal and what kind of prices have been talked about, and usually its really low, with Young's fee sticking out by a mile as way over the top

Somehow I forgot how much we paid for Van Persie. Which would suggest we could surely get that kind of fee for Rooney with a year on his deal

He was very good today. Good to see.

We just cannot sell him to Chelsea. Its about the only thing they're lacking.

Has Fergie helped the club in his role in all this? Has he made matters worse for Moyes

Didn't quite sit well with me the heroes reception he received. I understand why we want to show him support but he's had every opportunity to say he wants to stay, felt a bit like the fans were bending over for him tonight. Would've been interesting to see the reception he got if it wasn't Chelsea we were playing.

I guess he's staying, judging from tonight's comments. I was hoping we'd get shot this window and we could make him someone else's problem.

Thought he was average , but still created the best chance for Welbeck. His commitment was excellent though and it looks like he's nearing top match fitness. Dead cert to start at Anfield.

Yes i thought there'd be some support, the Swansea match suggested as much, however it was far more widespread and vociferous than i expected. As f nothing whatever had occurred.

Is it just me or could he have played Van Persie in more times than he did?

He was playing into a packed-as-feck Chelsea box. I don't think we could have asked for much more from him, he was great. Shame he didn't quite get that little first-touch flick through to RVP right, but it was a devilishly tricky pass to pull off.

I think he was right to opt to shoot at times. Both RVP and Welbeck were guilty of overplaying it a number of times - we needed them to be a bit more willing to gamble on a shot.

Yep. They didn't look on the wavelength today,

Rooney was good today. More importantly because he put in a real shift today. I don't think he was amazing or anything as some suggest. For every two nice bits of play he'd have one not so good one.

Was our best player on the pitch. It's a funny ol' game...

Watch him regress to a stumbling drunkard with the touch of a blind pirate against Liverpool.

He was far from average, mate. He was our best player tonight.

And that's coming from someone who rates Kagawa as a better no.10 than Rooney.

Thought he looked very good today, more his effort than end product but the other three attackers were peripheral or wasteful which was out of Wayne's control.

Under the circumstances, hats off to him for giving the crowd something to cheer. It could've turned into moans and groans in an instant.

Should've slipped on Van Persie for what would've been our best chance, but chose to shoot speculatively instead. Was good otherwise. Still think he's going to give us some more problems down the line if we do keep him but there's no way we can sell him to Chelsea, he's too good.

I have to hold up my hands and say that I was absolutely wrong about him playing. I felt it would create an issue and that he would struggle to contribute given the obvious difficulties of facing a team you're trying to engineer a move to. But that wasn't the case at all. In the circumstances he was really good. I don't believe anyone can have any complaints with that. Moyes got it spot on. Hopefully his commitment will remain the same when he plays against more humdrum teams that aren't Chelsea (or the Scousers at the weeekend).

He's either extremely professional or he hasn't really being pushing that hard for a move away, because there's no way Moyes would have played him otherwise.

Rooney's magical moments make Jose drool as Old Trafford crowd showers United forward with adulation

Wayne Rooney bites lip to hold back the tears.

When he walked on to the playing surface at Old Trafford, it was just like old times.

‘Rooney, Rooney’ they sang. Stretford End, Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, Main Stand and K Stand: Feel the noise.

It was electrifying and it wasn’t long before 2,900 travelling Chelsea supporters were out of their £45 seats to serenade the Manchester United striker.

Wayne Rooney, we’ll see you next week’ was cascading down the terraces as Old Trafford braced themselves for another frenetic night and a final £40million bid.

Respect. That’s what five Barclays Premier League titles, a Champions League medal and 197 goals as a Manchester United player earns you.

For 90 minutes everything that has been going on behind the scenes between Rooney, Chelsea and United was put to one side.

They don’t want him to leave, to cut short a career at the Theatre of Dreams when he should be approaching his prime at the age of 27.

RedCafe.net's wr8 makes plea to sweetheart Wayne.

He’s too good to be transferred for £40m, to be seen wearing the Chelsea blue when these two teams pile into each other again at Stamford Bridge on January 18.

They will forgive past sins, perceived or otherwise, if it means that the No 10 commits his future to United and David Moyes.

Rooney was in his element, the link man playing behind Robin van Persie after being selected to start for the first time since United’s clash against Arsenal last April.

There were traces of the old magic, the cushioned touch. And the pass with the outside of his boot into the path of Patrice Evra racing down United’s left could be replayed again and again.

At times the touches were tantalising, just as they were at the Liberty Stadium when he went on as a substitute for United on the opening day of the season.

Then he created two goals, earning a pat on the back from the new manager when he walked off the pitch following their 4-1 victory.

At times he mesmerises, as he did with the run, weave, twist and turn on the edge of the box to set up a gift for Danny Welbeck.

The United forward wasted it, lifting his effort over Petr Cech’s crossbar, prompting a look from Rooney that didn’t need any explanation.

That is Rooney at his best.

On the ball he oozed class, swivelling in tight spaces and underlining his ability — as if it was needed — in front of England manager Roy Hodgson.

He was scampering after everything, chasing lost causes and even clipping the heels of his pal Ashley Cole when they clattered into each other in the opening exchange.

What a change from the sour-faced striker who sat out Sir Alex Ferguson’s final game at Old Trafford after his ‘did he?- didn’t he?’ transfer request in May.

Back then he was forced on to the pitch to accept his Premier League title winner’s medal and listen to Fergie’s farewell speech at Old Trafford.

He was suffering then and there was more to come in the post-match interview when Ferguson claimed the United forward had asked to leave.

Three months on Rooney is still bristling about it, but he will continue to give his best for United until his future is resolved.

He wanted the ball, demanding it from Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick as they put in a shift and a half in United’s engine room. Rooney was working himself into a sweat, ignoring the occasional lapse or the careless misplaced pass into the feet of Cole.

It was eyes down, the kind of night to keep a careful watch on the two No 10s at the heart of one of the most intriguing sub-plots in the game’s recent history.

Juan Mata — last season’s Chelsea player of the year, players’ player of the year and stick-on for PFA team of the year after scoring 12 Premier League goals and creating 15 more — was dropped, and for such a huge game.

Mourinho insists he will not be sold — ‘not a chance’ — despite the £30m arrival of Willian, but they always say that these days, don’t they?

Chelsea’s manager doesn’t fancy him in the big-game environment and the row of blue suits in the directors’ box at Old Trafford will have worked that out already.

Chairman Bruce Buck, chief executive Ron Gourlay, secretary Dave Barnard and technical director Michael Emenalo were all bunched together after making the trip north.

They were still in their seats when Rooney made his way off the field at the final whistle; he looked up to the Stretford End as they chanted his name once again.

He was feeling the love, acknowledging the supporters booming out one of their anthems — ‘Wayne Rooney, he goes by the name of Wayne Rooney’ — as he made his way down the tunnel.

Now that’s respect.

As for me Neil Ashton, i have to clean up my laptop keyboard as it would appear that i have disgraced myself ever so slightly.

I wish

He'd stop writing

In tiny paragraphs.

Speak of pessimism!!! Chelsea were playing for a draw. In a packed midfield, he was the best player on the pitch.
Can't we just appreciate a good game, without adding a probably moan at the end? ;)

Just play him in the middle, don't shunt him around, let's not experiment too much and Roo/RvP combo is definitely going to click big time!

I just wish he'd stop writing. lol

That is very likely his most nauseating and embarrassing article to date.

One game was all it took to get to that FCOL!
