He'll score 15 goals by December, sign a new deal and leave for Everton in 2016 when he's become our all time top scorer and helped us win another title or two.

Don't care now much you all hate him and the hate is totally just. But if true this is a massive and important decision and I will be extremely pleased.

It has got to the stage for me if an offer came from abroad I would reluctantly agree with the sale but not in a million years for any price to another PL club.

Yup. Selling him to Chelsea or City would have been one of the most ridiculous decisions ever. Really glad that we're not considering that at any cost.

I'm glad the club is standing firm on this, selling to chelsea was always the worst possible scenario, and as much as i can't stand his face at the moment i really hope he doesn't get a hostile reception from the fans.

I'd start him against swansea to give him an early chance to redeem himself, this is a world cup year and i don't think he'd want to spend the entire season sulking.

After the way the footballing world laughed at Arsenal's decision to sell RVP to United last summer, it makes sense that with a new manager at the helm United don't want that kind of ridicule taking over...even if it means missing out on £40m or having an unsettled player.

So, it looks like he will probably stay.

Question is, will you boo him whenever he plays? Some people undoubtedly will, though it will probably fade after a few weeks.

Wait, why has everyone taken that Guardian article as a definite sign that he is staying? We've always said he wasn't for sale. Nothing has changed.

i dont think there is any risk if he stays. Rooney is a pro, he will give his all because he needs to if he wants to find another club or get a new deal with us. also there is the world cup. The only question is, if he will be here come september and i really hope so. it would be suicide to let him go to a titel rival.

You're right it was, in part, a problem of United's making and I'm sure that factored into Sir Alex's thinking when he went for Kagawa and Van Persie. Still, Rooney's attitude has been awful. How must the other players in the squad feel? Chicharito has scored 50 goals in 3 seasons for United without ever being a regular starter and doesn't moan? Nani...as frustrating as he can be was only two years back the best player in our team and yet can't even get into the team. If you're in the squad, you're on form and you are dropped for a player who clearly isn't at the top of his game and is not looking like he'll return to form, how do you feel when you're instantly benched to make room for him?

Rooney has proved again why Ronaldo has gone on to be the better player. I remember when we bought Karel Poborsky after his sparkling Euroo 96 and everyone (aka the media) predicted it would the end of the young David Beckham. But Beckham rose to the challenge. Competition made him a better player not a worse one. You can say the same for Scholes when Veron arrived. Likewise Andy Cole when Yorke was brought in by all accounts to replace him. It has been the trademark of Man Utd greats that when the gauntlet is thrown down they stand up to be counted. I genuinely don't know how Rooney would react to being systematically booed like Ronaldo was after Germany 2006, just look at his childish behaviour at the last World Cup when England fans expressed unhappiness with him and that was one game. Ronaldo, was a Ferguson player, you hate him and it makes him stronger, you push him and he pushes himself further. Rooney lacks that. He's been weighed, measured and found wanting mentally. Made to fight for his place and reassert himself he's spat his dummy out instead.

Send that to the fat bastard - might make him see sense.

Yep. Anyway, after what Moyes said in the press conference the other day, it was clear then he'd be staying if it wasn't before.

Swansea are a good team especially at home, and have already played competitive football in the Europa Cup. Rooney has hardly played since April and has missed the bulk of preseason.

Fergie:
Wayne needs to play a lot of games to get his match-fitness up

United have a tough start to the season as it is without hindering the team with a player whose is not going to be up to speed in the Premiership.

Meh. Fatty has shown himself up but for United's sake hopefully he will do well.

Selling to Chelsea for the fees quoted was never going to be on. Pretty much handing them the title on a plate.

Unfortunately though this will probably rumble on for the next year as he and his scumbag agent will continue leaking stories until he is either sold or gets a contract.

Every season that goes by he is getting older, Chelsea will soon find a new target. As someone said I could see him finishing his career back at Everton.

Yay, another season of Rooney pouting and starting over Kagawa/Chicharito/whoever else. I for one absolutely can't wait.

He's an asshole, but he's not a shit player. It's amazing how many people on here seem to have made themselves believe that.

I'm not keen on him staying, but if it means that we continue to be successful, I couldn't care less. What's best for the club has to come first.

Doesn't have to go down like that, though. Instead, we could be looking at a fluid, interchanging front-line of Kagawa, Rooney, Nani (or Welbeck, or someone else, perhaps Zaha kicks on like a devil) and RVP: An attacking force enough to blow anyone out of the water.

I don't think Rooney will sulk for too long if he gets it into his head that a move is actually quite impossible.

And if he does sulk and plays like shite, Moyes will bench him. He won't get minutes at the expense of anyone, not a chance. It seems very clear now that Rooney wants out. The club are obviously aware of this, but refuse to let him go as it would weaken us - and strengthen a rival. That's the premise here, really - not that we want to keep Rooney as such, at all costs. He won't be getting a free ride. If he knuckles down and commits himself to playing football as well as he can, he'll no doubt feature a lot - and it will obviously make our options all the more stronger. If he doesn't, he won't feature as much - but at least he won't feature up front for Chelsea.

This will not end well at all. You should just sell him for as big as fee possible and move on. Most in here seem to think he's shit anyway, so why the worry that he will make Chelsea nailed on for the title? Now all season long it'll be Rooney v Moyes and who is Rooney going to sign for next season crap. Utd like all clubs are bigger then any one player.

Gerrard's smug comment about
Rooney confiding in him and reference to 'I'm not here to discuss Wayne rooney's problems.'

Absolute sick of this sh1t now !!

I don't think he's shit, but I'd rather see promising young players that actually want to be here like Kagawa, Chicharito, Welbeck, even Januzaj play over Rooney who clearly doesn't want to be here and doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself. He'd rather pout and ask to leave than work hard and earn his place in the side.

Rooney had a shit attitude last season after being benched for a few games and then asked to leave. I'd love Rooney to prove me wrong and become motivated again but I really can only see his attitude being worse this season.

Agree. Once that transfer window shuts we will see what he is really made of. Will he sulk and just go through the motion, likely spending more time on the bench, or will he bust his ass and get his act together. Sadly I think he'll let us down on the pitch with some needless bookings initially as he let's his frustrations out. Hopefully he'll grow the feck up eventually though and sort himself out.

Those who are worried about that obviously don't think he's shit. Which he isn't. As a sheer striker he's potentially lethal. As Mourinho knows bloody well.

I said it back when Fergie confirmed that he APPARENTLY wanted to leave that he'll stay and have one of his best seasons of his career. Rooney strives on negative press and people doubting him, he'll go all out to prove the critics wrong.

You're absolutely mental if you think we're going to see a sulking Rooney this coming season. Expect he'll have an absolute storming season. Also quite amazing how many people have actually forgetting how good and how important he's been for the club.

Happiest I've been about the club since April*, the whole thing reads like a press release designed specifically to assuage me. There's even great Nani news...

Edit: This article, to be precise. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/13/wayne-rooney-not-for-sale-chelsea

The article may as well have been written by our press office, not sure how I feel about our new cosying up to certain journos, but there's no denying it.

*with the possible exception of the refusal by our lot to join a Mexican wave on Sunday.

I don't think anyone has forgotten what the lad has achieved in a United shirt mate! I think most are pissed off with him more than anything.

I get the impression the Liverpool fans have been trying to show Suarez so much love he will want to stay. I wonder how the situation would pan out here if Rooney was cheered wildly the first time he steps out for us this season. Im betting he will be booed but how much of an impact on Rooneys thinking could the fans have?

From the language used in the last few months, I think the club were open to the idea of selling Rooney if the right offer came in. But that was in the (overconfident) expectation that we were getting all these 'best players' we pursued so unsuccessfully. It now seems that no w/c players are arriving, so letting one of the few already at the club go would be a huge risk.

Rooney's our figurehead, the most recognizable face at the club, and losing him without a Fabregas, Bale, or even Ronaldo to replace him, doesn't do much for our image, particularly after a summer of very public raised expectations.

For better or worse, for both on and off the field reasons, I think we should hold on to him now.

Rooney thrives on negative press..... Ok then.

How come his worst and most prolonged dips in form are when there have been off the field issues going on?

A fecking apology or just anything from the little twat would go some to put the supporters back on side.

You reckon do you????

I do.

He'll only go to teams which he thinks are a step up, or whom he thinks will give him more money. City won't bother now with their strikeforce, likewise for PSG who signed big upfront. Barcelona got Neymar, Bayern will probably wait it out for Lewandowski. He won't go to Arsenal or Tottenham as that's too much of a step down and he won't get more money. Madrid clearly want Bale and Bale alone.

He's not getting his move if it isn't Chelsea. Quite clearly.

I don't think he'll do that. If he doesn't get his move the most I can see him saying is something like "I never said anything. It was all paper talk. We had private discussions and I fully intend to honour my contract." Everyone will know it's bullshit, but it's the way the game is played, as often as not.
