If we lose Rooney and don't replace him, I don't fancy putting my faith in our strike force if RVP not playing. Do we know if Moyes is going to play two up front or just one? Chicharito and Danny are fine but I wouldn't be happy if they were all we had if RVP got injured, which by past history he could quite easily. I am in panic mode again.

In an ideal World yes, but ultimately it depends on how professional Rooney would be in that final year. Unless we run his contract down and lose him for nothing, a year closer to expiration will see his price drop.

As good as he is, do you want a disruptive influence in the dressing room, or do you get rid before the rot sets in?

Well that's a chance the club appears willing to take and quite rightly in my opinion. The bottom line is, there is a professional code of conduct that all players have to abide by and Rooney is no different. If he isn't pulling his weight there are punitive measures that can be taken against him, a position we all hope will not materialize. I also believe that Rooney is not stupid enough to rock the boat that far, it will not bode too well for his future employment prospects elsewhere. Let's also not forget, the world cup is next year and by all counts Rooney will be aiming to put himself with every bit of a shout to lead the line for England, should they go to Brazil.

No player is bigger than the club and all that.

It's exactly for the above that the club has behaved the way it has in this sorry saga. The player has been reported be be disillusioned, apparently seeking a move from the club AND the club having evaluated all options available to it, has seen it FIT to NOT grant him his wish(es). This is a case of the club seeing more collective benefit of having Rooney around than selling him, a simple and clear case of the needs of the club being put far and above those of an individual !

Which can be translated as we need him more than he needs us and hence entirely contradictory to "no player being bigger than the club."

They were only really ill advised because they were taken out of context.

True, but irrespective of that the damage has already been done and in all likelihood provided further invitations for Chelsea to continue their pursuit and for Rooney's camp to portray themselves as the aggrieved party. Nonetheless, what has mattered the most so far has been the unwavering stance adopted by David Moyes and before him SAF in relation to the club's resolve in all of this.

This could have been so much simpler and less unpleasant if he had simply put in a transfer request months ago stating he felt like he needed a new challenge. No one would hold that against him.

What? Everyone would hold that against him, especially you as you fecking hate the man. Look at your posts in here, I don't even disagree with the general sentiment in half of them, but you would have lost your shit at Rooney for randomly handing in a transfer request in the same sense as you did almost as soon as this entire thing started, when it was rumour based.

How many other "world class players" always need a little caveat added on to that......on is day, when hes fit, when on form, when he can be bothered, when not coming back from injury, when the manager hasn't forgotten to give him his binky and pre match cuddle. I was laughed out of here a few years ago when I said Rooneys training habits and would prevent him being a top class player before he was too far into his 30s.......looks like its beginning already, two injuries before the season even begins and its only going to get worse......we should take what we can get while we can.

Its widely known I hate him and want him gone, Id have a damn sight more respect for him if he was honest, and said look, Ive had enough and I want to move on rather than holding out for the ridiculously named loyalty bonus, and I think most people could respect that more than all this cloak and dagger bullshit to grab a few million more.

This is not a trivial game of attrition or anything, it is about what is in the club's best interests - which in this case remains having Rooney as part of the squad rather than part of someone else's squad. IMO, it is the right decision by the club and in no way demonstrates a weakening of our position or a pandering to the player's selfish interests. We did that the first time he tried to engineer a move away BUT this time the situation is different. We have not offered him a new contract rather merely insisted on reminding him and his suitors of its existence and our intentions for having that contract.

You can't please everyone all of the time.

I wouldn't have minded one bit if he'd have simply handed in a request stating he wanted a fresh challenge. He's given us almost a decade of wonderful service and would have gone with my blessing.

That's a fair point. There would be uproar if he was given a bumper contract now!

The revisionism in this thread from some is unreal. He was always a bit shit, apparently. You massive bunch of tits.

Not in the squad for pre-season friendly in Sweden. Apparently got a shoulder injury against Betis.

I think this is similar to Bale's "injuries" that have stopped him playing for Spurs recently. He's gone!

I'd have thought half of Europe would have been queueing up for him but it appears not. I'm just tired of him, plenty of talent but his application has left a lot to be desired and him and Stretford are a bunch of bellends. I'd rather we not sell him to Chelsea but this is dragging on too much. There's still a quality player there but I just can't see it at United. Awkward position to be in.

Me too seeing as people on the previous pages assure us of how highly rated he is on the continent......

Shame it's ending this way but I can't help thinking that Rooney should have gone before Moyes got his feet under the table.

Drag it out til end of August when he's not had a pre-season at all and won't be in shape til xmas. Chelsea can enjoy an unfit Wayne Rooney for half a season.

Someone else said exactly that. Why Rooney would only interest Chelsea, same with Suarez only attracting Arsenal?

Suarez is understandable due to his antics in Holland and the UK. Rooney doesn't have that baggage, so it's a little bit more of a mystery.

Unless his issues that certain people keep insisting are all made up by the press are more widely believed by those in the game........

Back injury more like.

Because before any transfer, it's pretty clear that the player is sounded out through his agent. I'd imagine Rooney has made it clear he is leaving United because he wants to go to Chelsea which would make anyone else's interest pointless.

Can we just tell Chelsea to cut through all the bullshit and offer us mata in exchange for rooney? Let's stop wasting time.

There's no chance of Chelsea letting Mata come here, it'd be ridiculous.

Also it could just be a case of if they buy him they have to come into work and see that face every day..........has to be a consideration.

It was all good until about March, scored that winner against Fulham and he was putting himself about. Even in April when he was playing Centre-Midfield he looked quite attentive and keen. I don't know if SAF was just tired of him or if it was a parting shot for 2010 but it is clear to me that Rooney and United as a relationship has gone as far as it can. Rooney could have easily turned round this July and said 'Ok, new era under Moyes, let's start from afresh,' he has plenty to prove and to gain but his head has been turned.
