It's not so much about just getting £40m. If we agree to sell Wayne then we have to pay up the remainder of his contract. If he puts in a transfer request, then we will allegedly save close to £20m on wages. As it stands, £20m bids mean we will be giving him away for next to nothing once we pay him off.

Bit of a stalemate atm, we are refusing to sell, chelsea don't seem willing to up their bid, and Rooney doesn't seem to want to put in a transfer request. If Rooney is really that unhappy, then only he can really accelerate the process by putting in a transfer request. If he isn't willing to take that plunge, then he should stop whining and get on with his job.

What is this about? Why would we need to pay up the remainder of his contract if he leaves?

I'm leaning towards him staying ,unfortunately.Mainly because no one outside the PL wants him and the club know this.

I think he is getting confused with sell on fees and loyalty bonuses which we don't have to pay if he hands in a transfer request

Obviously if he leaves we don't have to pay his remaining wages

Cheers Theon, my brain fart clarified! :D

Shouldn't have got out of bed today, got in at 6 this morning, and have the hangover from hell! Im off for a lie down.

I'm not saying it was a bad deal but if they are willing to spend that much on Bale than maybe we could have pushed harder to get ourselves a better deal. I think the fee going around for Bale is crazy but none the less if they manage to get that deal from them than Spurs have certainly done a much better deal than we did.

Ronaldo made it clear there was only one club for him. There was never any competition.
SAF did well to get him to sign a new contract, knowing this. Otherwise we would have lost him cheaply.
£80M was a good deal for us. Five years of inflation (driven by oil money), cannot be ignored.

Its not pure inflation, I wouldn't say every transfer fee has gone up, some have stayed very similar. It has certainly inflated but I can't think of any that would suddenly make Bale worth close to 80m. Also again using Bale, there is no suggestion that anyone else is in for us, except ourselves and there's been no report over an actual bid from us, or that he wants to come, and we know we won't spend 80m on him.

Either way its not a big deal, it was just a general comment that I wouldn't say that we for whatever reason seem to get great value for our players, well none that I can think off. Ronaldo seemed that way but if Bale does go for over 80m then I'd reconsider that.

Torres £50M, Carroll £35M, Moura £35M, Martinez £40M... etc.
If he is the best player that can be transferred, he is in the highest demand.
FWIW, I don't think he is worth that, but we got a good price for Ronnie 5 years ago.

Might Jose's (over)confidence & Chelsea's low bids mean they're certain that Wayne would only agree to go there?

United have won the league 5 times the last 7 seasons, incredible really.
United didn't win the league in 2009/2010 and 2011/2012.

The only two seasons Wayne Roooney's played as a true 9 is 2009/2010 and 2011/2012.
Rooney played as a 10 and occasionally a winger (08/09 with Ronaldo spearheading the attack) the 5 times United did win the league.

I don't know what to make of it but it could be interesting. Possibly. Maybe.

He does score shit loads of goal as a 9 though, can't take that away from him. 34 in 44 both them seasons.

Correlation does not imply Causation.

Might Jose's (over)confidence & Chelsea's low bids mean they're certain that Wayne would only agree to go there?

Perhaps, well that and they are confident of no rivals in their pursuit of Rooney.

However so long as Rooney fails to submit a written transfer request and Chelsea a bid which reflects the nature of a transfer like this, that certainty can only take them so far.

One likely reason why we are nearly in August with matters at a standstill.

Yep. Silent Rooney's going to have to step up those newspaper stories, like 'ROONEY SOURCE: "SAF kicked Wayne in the nuts on his Wedding Night".

ROONEY SOURCE: GLASWEGIAN SKULDUGGERY! Fergie used his influence to have baby's name changed from Clay to Klay.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he has had an agreement with Chelsea for ages now given the way things have developed - or would Stretford never do such a thing?

Torres arguably was worth £50m when he was at his best, his drop off has been pretty extreme. Carroll represents an incredibly bad transfer plus your standard English inflation, Moura at 35m isn't really that much than we paid for Rooney at a similar age, Martinez was high but they decided to pay his full release clause. There have been other much more reasonable transfers, Silva, Mata, Toure, none of them were inflated, nor Carzola. There will always be swings and some exceptions that skew the figures and whilst I agree that there will have been a general increase I don't think it could be anywhere extreme enough to have Bale at 80m on inflation alone.

As I said it was a good price but if they are offering more then that for Bale, someone who has not achieved near what Ronaldo had than perhaps we could have got an even better deal at the time.

He'd sell his mum to a research lab at the right price by the looks of it.

I still don't understand Maureen's comment, though. Mouthing off like that can only piss off The Equalizer. And you don't want to do that (...I hope...)

Agreed with the sentiment - he should just get on with it, but I don't think that's how loyalty bonuses work. i.e we def won't owe him all his wages. It will definitely be a small percentage of most probably the transfer fee accepted or a portion of his outstanding wages. I'd be incensed if it was anywhere near £5m, let alone £20m

Silva, Mata and Cazorla all came from clubs with serious financial problems. Yaya Touré went for £24 million, that's a reasonable price considering he wanted out and he wasn't a key player for Barcelona anymore, with Guardiola preferring Busquets in the holding role in midfield.

But yeah, Bale at 80m would be crazy and pretty much down to nothing but the media hype. He's a very good player, don't get me wrong, one of the best in the Premier League but he was hyped up to ronaldoesque proportions which is stupid.

Well that depends on if they think we're a bit of a soft touch. I mean if Spurs really have managed to get an 80m+ bid for Bale than that begs the question on whether we let Ronaldo go to cheaply, the market hasn't moved that much in 4 or so years.

I'm sure Chelsea know we're not selling Rooney to them on the cheap, so a soft touch is nothing to do with it. The question is how much they value Rooney at, which is seemingly not a lot as they've not launched a higher bid. And if you think that they've been deterred by us telling them he's not for sale, see us and Fabregas.

Rooney's grotesque wages skew his value in the transfer market.

To sign Wayne Rooney, you have to pay a million quid a month in wages in an age of Financial Fair Play.

He's not the only player who earns stupid wages, and certainly wouldn't be the only one at Chelsea. If they thought he was worth it, they'd pay him what he wants.

Rooney is not just a transfer, he's a statement. To sell the best player in England to a rival for £40m is not realistic. He's been a talisman for the country for 10 years and no other player has dominated the way he's done it since the age of 17. I don't think people can get this into their head but just look at it ffs, where have all the other 17 year old players been the past 10 years??? He's feckING UNIQUE!!!

If he ended up in Chelsea and Mourinho did some magic and turned him into that 30goals/season again we would look like absolute idiots. Even the Ronaldo money is starting to look a bit small these days when you look at what that guy have done. If I take my red tinted glasses of and get really humble I might accept a bid of £66m for Rooney - but ONLY if we sign Fabregas in the other end.

I don't think there's anyone on that kind of money. I think Torres is meant to be the top earner on around 170k.

Isn't he the top earner in English football?

Forgot about the huge amount of individual honours and team honours Ronaldo has won since he left us. :wenger:

I would think Hazard is on quite a wage there for starters, considering he spurned us and City in favour of a less attractive Chelsea.

He's not the best footballer in England. Dominant player? Henry and Ronaldo were proper dominant players in English footballer.

The reigning European champions is quite an attractive proposition, especially when you throw London and increased wages into the bargain as well.

And playing time as well, Hazard was given a lot of promises when it came to that, something SAF rarely does for young players.

At the time, it was a very weak position for us. There wasn't much creativity in that team - the likes of Kalou and Malouda were where Oscar and Hazard now play. I'm sure he was pretty much told that a team would be built around him.

If he stays till he supposedly return on 6th Aug, what reception will he get? A hostile one I'm presuming right? Can't do any good in terms of him staying

Cause, you know.. He's one of our most decorated players in the peak of his career? I mean what a fecking shocker.

He is overpaid as a result of holding your club to ransom two years ago. I don't think he is the best player in the Premier League (by quite a way), but on account of being English and having a cnut for an agent, he is the best remunerated.

Sorry, my bad, what I meant was OMG Rooney is amazeballs and we are like, sooooo fecked if he leaves
:wenger:

Yeah, I mean feck the club that offers the player who had been a lynchpin of goal scoring a deal that better reflects the quality of himself and his standing in the league. Totally fecking bonkers that is.. I don't know how the club sleeps at night sometimes.

Chelsea and City have the biggest wage bills in the league, I am sure you have got a couple of £200K+ players on your books. Not sure what sort wages Rooney would demand at a new club, I can't see him earning £250k a week.

Whether he wants to stay or go I think he'll be hopeless to avoid a hostile reception at this point.

It would do him a lot of of good to at least speak publicly though, assuming he wants to stay, which is unlikely.
