Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

I've thought since 2010/2011 that when he's at his very best, his best position is in the number 10 role, however he's nowhere near consistent enough when it comes to his performances to always produce his best football there.

I always thought a number 10 position was his best role, even when he was scoring shitloads as an out and out striker. But I've changed my mind. He's lost that spark, that physical ability to blast past opponents, which was a big part of his game as a number 10. He has compensated for it somewhat in terms of understanding the game, his passing ability, etc, but like you said, he's not consistent enough with it to play that role. I guess he needed that physical advantage to be a number 10. Without it, he's not the same Rooney.

Yeah, he was never the most technical in the way Kagawa would perhaps be for us if used as a number 10, but he always thrived when he could drop deep, press an opponent for the ball and suddenly turn defence into attack in a matter of seconds while blasting past opponents with his power. Had he been able to keep that then he would've been consistently brilliant for us. I'm starting to think he's going to struggle to re-discover that now though.

Nobody said he can't write. Just that when he does, he prefers crayons. Which you have to admit, isn't entirely implausible. And it's a dead cert that he sticks his tongue out.

It's a fact, man. He wrote "My Story So Far" (a wonderful title, by the way) using crayons. Red ones, I believe. Some say he intends to use blue ones for the follow-up, "My So-There Story".

I wonder - genuinely - if you could use a crayon for signing a transfer request? If so, I think more players should do it.

Man United ready for Wayne Rooney transfer.. but will only sell abroad not to Arsenal or Chelsea

By Simon Mullock
27th July 2013

Wayne Rooney will not be allowed to join one of Manchester United’s rivals for the Premier League title.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea and fellow Londoners Arsenal have both had offers for the England striker rejected after United boss David Moyes insisted that Rooney is not available at any price.

But Sunday Mirror Sport understands that the champions will sell the 27-year-old – if he agrees to move abroad.

United do not want Rooney to come back to haunt them by strengthening another team in the Premier League.

Despite Moyes’ claim that he wants to keep Rooney, his reluctance to give assurances that he will not employ the player in his favourite central striking role has not been well received by the United No.10.

Old Trafford vice-chairman Ed Woodward has said there are no plans to offer the £250,000-a-week striker a new contract.

And, with just two years left on his current deal, United know his value will now begin to fall.

Chelsea are ready to make a second bid for Rooney at £30m – which would give United a £5m profit on what they paid Everton nine years ago.

But United are desperate to send Rooney abroad.

Real Madrid have been linked with the former Everton forward, but the Spanish giants are currently focusing their attention on Gareth Bale.

Chelsea can go up to £30m in Rooney pursuit as Blues bid to balance books

By Rob Draper
27 July 2013

Chelsea are prepared to spend £30million on their pursuit of Wayne Rooney as they size up their second bid to lure the Manchester United striker to Stamford Bridge.

Rooney was dismayed at his treatment by Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of last season and while new United manager David Moyes has attempted to rebuild bridges, the player's confidence in his future at the club has been shaken. United chief executive Ed Woodward says United are in no hurry to offer Rooney a new deal, even though his current one runs out in June 2015.

But Chelsea will be able to match the England striker's £220,000-a-week wages and can offer him a four-year deal. A second Chelsea bid, expected to be £25m, is planned after an initial inquiry of £20m-plus was turned down. But United are unlikely to do a deal before they have met Chelsea at Old Trafford on August 26.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has insisted the club can make signings this summer without having to sell first, despite the restrictions of UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations. Mourinho said: 'The club are working hard to keep the numbers in balance but we can still invest in a player who costs £20m, £25m, £30m and not break the balance. We don't need to sell to do that.'

Asked if he could spend £50m on a striker, Mourinho said: 'The striker I want doesn't cost £50m.'

Say what, Maureen?

Might not mean anything, but it's an interesting choice of words.

Whilst he might not cost 50m he is equally not sitting there at the fron the megastore in a bargain bin.

If Moyes could get the right player in beforehand i think any bid between 35-45m would cause a moment of pause at board level.

Love the media pushing the idea of Chelsea of all fecking clubs "balancing the books" but then talking about them matching his wages with us (the chosen number being £220,000 this time round).

It's embarrassing that Chelsea are thinking of bidding again after we've turned down a bid and said he isn't for sale.

feck off Chelsea and stop embarrassing yourself.

You guys should be infracted for posting mail and mirror in here.

Very possibly :smirk:, i have no liking for either in the normal run of things.

With the rise of blogs and podcasts on the one hand and decreasing newspaper circulation [more so for the Mirror than the Mail presently] it can be hoped that standards improve among those who remain.

The Caf has been quoted in both the Express and the Star in relation to Rooney yet out of the three i'd have this forum down for the greater longevity.

Media spin presents...

Mourinho failing with a bid = Machiavellian José biding his time before striking. The grandmaster of mind games.

Moyes/Woodward failing with a bid = Incompetent, embarrassing fools. Hopelessly out of their depth.

Moyes personally does actually have a decent well of support out there in the media as a whole i think, however until such time as the new regime can prove that there are easier pickings to be had elsewhere the vultures will continue to circle above Old Trafford.

Whilst Fergie may have asked the supporters to stand by the new manager he had no such illusions about the press. And those whose living revolves around a questionable relationship with Chelsea are going to be on the lookout from the get-go.

I just really want Chelsea to offer something we can accept

Was reading the Chich thread earlier and he really does need to start some more games, but that won't happen if Wayne re-signs. He started 9 league games last season which is a joke for someone as talented as him

It's hilarious, all the figures, bids, quotes and valuations thrown around for Bale, Saurez. Then you consider the fees Torres, Falcao, Neymar, Cavani, Ibrahimovich (even f'n Higuain) all went for (granted most went to oil clubs) - and what we paid for RvP who had 1 year left on his contract...

Then figures quoted around for Rooney (who thereotically is only hitting his prime now) are 20-25m pounds. You're having a fecking laugh. I don't give a shit what anyone else on the Caf thinks, but Rooney's certainly up there with this lot, FFS, even better than most, if not all of them. Sure he's not had the best past season, but he's proven it on all stages for the past decade.

So anything under 40m pounds and we (United) are mugs.

Bit more of the quote from the sun:

Like when asked if Chelsea could afford to splash £50m on a forward, Mourinho replied cryptically: “The striker I want doesn’t cost £50m, doesn’t cost £40m.”
And when quizzed over whether he could do business on September 2, when the transfer window shuts, he added: “That’s why it is open.”

As if he said that 'doesn't cost £40million'

What a wierd thing to say, I can't even imagine Rooney would like to hear that - and he must realise that he hasn'ta fecking hope of getting Moyes to sell if he doesn't go near to £40m

Really bizzare comment

It's probably music to his ears. Chelsea pay lower transfer fee, Stretford manages to squeeze a huge signing on fee for Rooney.

Jose Mourinho starring in; "Playing the media like a fiddle" see the 20th and final show, last chance to get tickets all other shows sold out!

Obviously not if nobody's offering anywhere near those figures for him.

Well that depends on if they think we're a bit of a soft touch. I mean if Spurs really have managed to get an 80m+ bid for Bale than that begs the question on whether we let Ronaldo go to cheaply, the market hasn't moved that much in 4 or so years.

Who at that time was going to offer us more than the fee we received? There was no free spending Monaco or PSG back then, Chelsea wasn't his dream move and we wouldn't have sold him to them anyway.

Who's offering more to spurs for Bale? You don't always need someone else willing to go higher, depends how much the other team want your player.

Maybe not that much but it has, the players keep getting more and more expensive with each passing season.

Considering Ronnie's well publicised desire to move to Real and they being the sole suitor, as well as the knowledge that he had seen United to multiple honours during his development, that the deal we reached was a creditable one.

If we take the present market out of it and consider the two players themselves, it is Bale's which is the one out of proportion yet that is the way of things in 2013 it seems.

Of course the agreement with Ronaldo was reached over time and Madrid were willing to wait whereas with Bale there is an attempt to force it through scant weeks before the league is to begin.

It's not so much about just getting £40m. If we agree to sell Wayne then we have to pay up the remainder of his contract. If he puts in a transfer request, then we will allegedly save close to £20m on wages. As it stands, £20m bids mean we will be giving him away for next to nothing once we pay him off.

Bit of a stalemate atm, we are refusing to sell, chelsea don't seem willing to up their bid, and Rooney doesn't seem to want to put in a transfer request. If Rooney is really that unhappy, then only he can really accelerate the process by putting in a transfer request. If he isn't willing to take that plunge, then he should stop whining and get on with his job.

I'm not saying it was a bad deal but if they are willing to spend that much on Bale than maybe we could have pushed harder to get ourselves a better deal. I think the fee going around for Bale is crazy but none the less if they manage to get that deal from them than Spurs have certainly done a much better deal than we did.
