I've never really believed Rooney will be off this summer and nothing has happened to change that. There's no interest from abroad and he'll be still here come next summer imo.

Yeah but you've got a weird fetish for the guy. Any reasonably minded person accepts that there is a great chance he'll leave when the manager comes out and says he wants out.

Former manager.

I guess I'm not reasonably-minded either.* I still don't think there's much chance of him going anywhere. Haven't really all summer.

*This isn't pointed. I'm really probably not.

He wasn't former manager at the time. I take it you think Cesc will stay at Barca? It's not just a case of Rooney going either, he'd need a new deal and I can't see us giving it him. It's clear he wants out and that the player usually gets their wish in that situation.

But he is now. Yes, I absolutely think Cesc will stay at Barca, I've said so from the start. We'll see what happens, but when the transfer window closes and he's still with us I won't be above a bit of 'hate to say I told you so' action. (And obviously I'm happy to take the same if I'm wrong.)

Next summer, or even January, is a different matter. I'm only saying that I don't see him going in this transfer window.

Even if Rooney came on TV wearing a United shirt, hat, scarf and sunglasses - crying his eyes out, begging for forgiveness and calling Chelsea a bunch of cnuts - I would still expect Rooney to come back a little ways down the road moaning about something else and asking to leave again.

I think it's time we thank him through gritted teeth for his service to the club and let him go off and make the biggest mistake of his life.

Arsenals bid for Suarez definitely puts Chelseas bid in to context. Rooney is not half the player Suarez is and however poor or average you think Rooney was this season, there's no reason why as a main striker again he can't get the same number of goals as Suarez but without causing anywhere near the controversy Surarez does. Definitely should hold out for over 30m.

Only TWO Manchester United stars ever owned their shirt claims Jonny Evans and NEITHER was Wayne Rooney

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has revealed that in his time under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford only TWO players were ever sure of their places.

Robin van Persie was one of them, says Evans. Wayne Rooney was not.

With the Rooney transfer saga seemingly growing out of whether Wazza has been treated unreasonably - or treated just like everyone else - Evans' insight is eyecatching.

Speaking on United's pre-season tour about his own efforts to nail down a first-team slot at United, Evans recalled that Fergie never wanted a player to feel he had a right to play, or to line-up in a particular position.

The exceptions that proved the rule were RvP and Cristiano Ronaldo - both always first choice in their positions according to Evans.

"Unless it was Robin van Persie or Cristiano Ronaldo when he was here, there was never a first choice in any position," said Evans, according to agency reports.

"If you didn't perform he would have you out of the team, but then if one of the other players had a game or two when they weren't at their best the manager would have no problem putting you back in.

"The key thing was whenever he picked a team you always thought he was doing it for a reason, not because of any personal vendetta or that he didn't rate you."

Clearly the sort of regime Evans describes isn't going to suit all the people all the time - particularly perhaps if your name is Wayne and a new player comes in and seems to get unusual treatment ahead of you.

 WWUMMMMY TIIIMEEEEEEE

I can see all the gumbies working in the office getting board and popping up the editors office 'fancy a Rooney wum in todays paper?...'

It's such a subjective thing anyway even if reported accurately.

For instance why wouldn't Edwin be among the names mentioned during Evans' United career? Of all the players in that time period time at OT he would stand out for such a right IMO and more so than RVP [Rooney also for that matter].

Very strange comments by Evans if they are being reported correctly considering Rooney has pretty much been untouchable regardless of his performances for the last few years. Even last season he started getting benched towards the end - before that was playing whenever fit.

To be fair, you normally don't rotate goalkeepers so he's probably not included them in the discussion.

Perhaps that is so but that VDS was not just any goalkeeper, Tim Howard had that season where he got in the Team of the Year but he didn't own the shirt in the same way.

We could end up in a debate over the definition of what Evans meant before too long, however even as a critic of Rooney in the present there must've been at least one season where he came close to "owning the shirt" in the past. I don't think it applied last season mind you, were Hernandez to have played in his place i still think we'd have won the league. JMO of course.

Jose Mourinho 'calm' about prospect of signing Wayne Rooney to Chelsea

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...-signing-wayne-rooney-to-chelsea-8732597.html

Could he be resigned to losing out on him or is he confident a deal will be done.

I think he's confident they'll get him eventually. The player wants to join Chelsea, Chelsea have the funds to make it happen, United don't particularly need him (I mean basically we've got RVP, obviously there's always need of a player with Rooney's ability). He seems willing to wait until after the season starts, its possible we absolutely refuse to sell him before they play us.

Wayne Rooney has been integral to every league win since 2007. If we are to lose him, we need to replace him with someone of at least a similar standard. That somebody is just not available.

I knew someone would take it like that. Obviously he's a hugely important player and has been the face of the club since Ronaldo left. You could easily argue however that RVP is a replacement of a similar standard.

I agree with you though, we need another attacker to replace his impact, and the calibre of player required is very difficult to find.

it is not like there is no other player(s) that is not capable of making the same contributions. Everyone thought the same thing last year right when RVP was bought.... "but we already have Rooney", look how that turned out. Some posters on the Caf make it sound like Rooney is some rare unicorn-like endangered species that we should treat preciously because there is no other Rooney available out in the world. Rooney is not THAT important. His contributions CAN be replaced. He is no Messi or Ronaldo, and even then Man United was fine after Ronaldo left. Man United will be fine if Rooney leaves.

Nonsense from Evans. VDS, Evra, Ferdy/Vidic when fit for a few examples of guaranteed starters.
Rooney has pretty much been a shoe in, only the very occasional times he's been punished.

Can't see him going at all this summer. The bids being put in are real joke. 20-23million? For Rooney? Come on. Torres and Carrol went for ridiculous fees, Suarez is laughably being bandied around at 50+ million after 1 quality season.

Chelsea need to put in an insane bid or there's no chance we'll be silly enough to strengthen them.
If the choice was 20m or keep him for 2 years and lose him for free, I'd almost go for the latter.

So would I probably, but I don't think it will come to that.

His reputation has never been lower it seems, everyone knows he wants to leave and the interest is confined to just a few clubs who are offering less than £30million. You would have never have guessed that last year

His general play was very poor last season, probably the worst year I have seen him have at United. You have to think that he won't be that bad again, cocking up simple passes and miscontrolling the ball etc.

If he gets back to anywhere near his best then I think we could sell him for £25million+ in the last year of his contract, which would be a decent result

For the record, I am in no way trying to make out that he's a rare unicorn-like endangered species. What I am making out is that he contributed 12 goals and 11 assists in the league alone last year, all in a season where he was injured for large parts and supposedly replaced by RVP.

A fit and firing Wayne Rooney is pretty much impossible to replace in the current market without spending at least 50 million. Unless we're magically tripling our record transfer bid for the Welsh lad at Spurs, or convincing Ronny to come home, we need to do everything in our power to keep Rooney.

I think there's an element of people thinking we won't hold on for the right price. Ronaldo aside I can't think of many players that we've really sold at a good price. When you look at Arsenal bidding £40m for Suarez and Napoli agreeing £34m for Higuain, there's no way Rooney is worth under £30m especially when as you said he's far from a spent force and he's being targeted by chelsea cause they think he can be a top striker again.

Personally as I've said before I think if we put our foot down and say he won't be sold at all or unless the price is right, I don't think he'll go awol or something, especially with the world cup coming up, I think he'll get his head down and play, may be not as enthusiastic but he'll be efficient. Personally I think he's definitely worth £25m to us over two seasons unless he really acts really unprofessional but I don't think he'll be that bad. It gives us the opportunity to see if things can be repaired as well although of course he is largely at fault. Plus if Chelsea can't get him and move on to other targets he might not have anywhere to go in a years time. I would imagine that's why he kept pretty silent, if things don't pan out he can come out and say he's committed etc, although most will know its bs.

What Rooney will we get? I don't think he wants to be here that should be considered also.

I think once he gets back into training he'll put his head down and work hard. If he is pissed off it's because of the people at the top of the club, mostly Fergie by all accounts. Wayne Rooney isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I don't think he'd be stupid enough to sulk and mope around if he stays with us this season. He'll be embarrassed by how this whole affair has panned out and will want to prove to his team mates and the fans that he isn't a complete knob. There is room for redemption still IMO.

Who says? Isn't that like the time Vidics wife hated Manchester?

I think its pretty damn obvious. He wants to leave, that much is unquestionable. All indications are that Chelsea is his preferred destination, which makes perfect sense really given the presence of Mourinho and their desperate need for a striker.

In a sense, he's already been replaced in the first team.

When we find a player other than RvP who can give us 10+ goals and assists in a season, I'll believe that. Kagawa isn't close to having the sort of impact on games yet required to replace Rooney from the team.

I don't think so. We have RVP, Chicha, Kagawa and Welbeck for two positions. The last time we went into UCL final we had Rooney, Berbatov, Chicha and Owen for those two positions and I think that this quartet of attackers/attacking midfielders is easily better than that of 2011. RVP as No.9, Kagawa as No.10 with Chicha and Welbeck there too are great options. We should sell Rooney if a very good bid comes from Chelsea or a good bid comes from outside of England.

We have that player in Hernandez. We only need to play him as much as Rooney and he will easily give as good end product. Kagawa at Dortmund was better than Rooney of last season.

If Jose wants Wayne that badly, I would highly recommend we demand Juan as part of the deal, plus whatever amount of cash. If Jose says no, then no deal.

A win-win for us, and possibly a lose-lose for the soulless chavs.

I see lots of hearsay to be honest. We cannot pick and choose what we read and state this is fact because it makes sense. The fact is, people lie. I don't think it it's obvious he 'wants' to go Chelsea. I think Wayne probably wants us to say, 'Wayne, get fit and play'....

Am I right? feck knows but until we hear otherwise, why not? The media - all it's various forms, aren't suddenly going to become truthful overnight...

Yeah the £20million bids are a joke in this market.

I mentioned before about the wages of Rooney though which is definitely relevant, over a 4 year contract I reckon Napoli will pay Higuain around £20million less than Chelsea would pay Rooney, so even though Higuain isn't as good I reckon it would make sense if they left for similar amounts (around £35m) - especially as Higuain is younger as well so retains that sell on value more than Wayne.

Yeah I agree with you on the second part mate I reckon he would put his head down as well, he has to really. I think Chelsea think the opposite though - they are bidding such a low offer because they think if we say no Rooney won't do what you say and we get left with an unhappy, unmotivated player getting paid £12million each year.

True about 2011, but I don't think the 2011 team was all that great. The only difficult team we faced in the CL that year was Chelsea, who weren't all that either. Also you have to factor in that Nani and Valencia were both superb for various parts of that campaign. Nani may be gone, Valencia was awful last year.

I'm more interested in a player who can operate in any of the 3 positions behind the striker. We're set up top but I think we're lacking a dynamic attacker not named RVP or Kagawa. As I said in my Replacing Rooney thread, I think Isco would have been the perfect option but he's obviously unattainable. Nico Gaitan might be worth a look, or El Sharaawy. A player in that mold at least.

Also if Zaha ends up being the next Ronaldo forget everything I've said.
