Having a grumpy Shrek sat in the stands or benched for two years while you pay him £200K a week then lose him for nothing is not exactly a "win" for United though.

It would be pretty good way of showing Rooney and the rest of the world that we dont take kindly to mercenaries though. And I bet Rooney will be miserable as well, thinking "Damn, I could get atleast £300k/w sitting on a bench in London".

I can see why a fan would think that, certainly.

Fleecing us for £40 million plus and spending it wisely must be very tempting for Moyes and co though.
As soon as we sell to your lot it weakens the club hugely. I really hope that 40 million is not tempting for Moyes at all.

That's a very, very expensive way to prove a point.

I would have thought selling him, replacing him and then winning every trophy going would be prefereable.

Or; Let him bitch and moan on the bench whilst we still win every trophy. As a fan, I couldnt give a feck if we payed him £20 or £200k at the moment, as he should be treated as bad as he seemingly treat the club. It's become personal rather than business-related the second time he asked for a transfer.

You know what? I don't really vilify Rooney if he wants to go. I just wish United would get a move on with signing Fabregas and then letting Rooney go.

I don't know how we will do without Rooney, but for me he's past his prime.

It's best for both sides if he left, and I don't care if he goes to Chelsea.

It will cost the club about £60 million (£10 million a year wages + the transfer fee you'd get) if they do that. There is no chance it will happen.

I thought the understanding is that the PFA would step in if a player were forced out of the team on unjustifiable grounds. Clubs cannot just ignore their own players for no reason and would potentially face heavy court actions should they attempt to do so.

You wonder how the other players have reacted to all this nonsense. They may be fed up of him now. He has insulted his team mates twice, basically saying he thinks he is too good for this team. The senior players might be asked if they want the incredible sulk kept or sold.

Pity the PFA don't just tell him to grow up.

Has this 'rot in the reserves' thing ever actually happened?

Don't think United will ever get to a position like that with Rooney. If Rooney genuinely wishes to leave, then United can't stop it. An unhappy player isn't going to excel, is he?

In any event, the legal consideration is surely moot, because it's Rooney who wishes to leave, not United?

I dont think we should let him rot in the reserves either, we keep him and play him. Even last season when he was unhappy still produces the goods at times.

What can they do? If we fined him two weeks wages every fortnight they would probably step but after reading what happened to Malouda it seems like the club is allowed to leave a player out of the squad and make him train with the reserves.

Hypothetically speaking though, is the rot in the reserves situation a legal option for clubs? I was under the impression that it wasn't.

I don't know what you mean by your last sentence.

I just meant Rooney wishes to leave and that United, logically, wouldn't stand in his way...ultimately. Better to let him go. Avoid all the bother that would result from an unhappy player.

Honestly it sometimes feels like that Rodgers has taken control over our official twitter account.

Why is he a mercenary? If Rooney wants to be a starter in a winning club instead of a second choice in another winning club, I'd say it's ambition.
Was he a mercenary when he was scoring goals and winning trophies for you over the last nine years?

The 2nd time he asked for a transfer, he became a mercenary as it was clear he just wanted higher wages. First it was due to lack of ambition for the club, then it's because he's unhappy about being subbed. He has been looking for excuses to leave for a club that'll pay him more, as United dont feel that he is worth more than he's already being payed. So he fecks off.

He doesn't want to go to a winning club, he wants to go to Chelsea.

Exactly. Fans sometimes forget the costs of doing this. Probably a 30m fee from Chelsea and 25-30m on wages for the next two years means that we lose 55-60m pounds trying to look badass. Retarded decision if we choose so. Rotting on reserves is not an option.

Lets be honest... he wouldn't rot in the reserves anyway... too good a player. He'd just be asked to be professional and do another season at least. I can't see what is wrong with that. It's no different to what Spurs did with Modric or what Liverpool are about to do with Suarez I expect. Make the feckers fulfill the terms of the contracts that they signed.

If Van Persie had 1 year on his contract and cost United 22 million quid, the. we should get about 40 million selling him to a rival club. If he goes to another league then 35 million is good enough.

We should get, but if there isn't any club willing to pay those money then we will not get them. The value of a player is the amount of money a club is willing to pay, not how much fans want. Van Persie came to us as the best player in the league and had just won both the league's top player and top scorer awards. Rooney had a mediocre season by his standards and has serious questions about his fitness (though to be fair Van Persie had too) and there were City and Juve interested on Van Persie too, while here it seems that only Chelsea is interested on Rooney. I would like to get as much money as we can from Chelsea, but if he really wants to leave (almost certainly this looks the case) and Chelsea don't offer more than 30m, the ideal scenario IMO is to sell him.

Chelsea have won a comparable amount of major trophies as United over the last decade.

Go away, I still haven't forgiven you lot for putting an end to my favourite non utd stat......the one about no London clubs ever having won the euro cup/CL........bastards

We have won twice many league titles as you over the last ten years. Bu yeah, you have been the second best club in England during the last 10 years. Kudos to you, the league would have been a bit boring without Roman moneys.
