You reckon it's going to be happy families after this has happened for the second time?

I don't think Rooney is going to sulk or create havoc in the dressing room if he stays. When fit and on form, he'll be a starter for the team in the hole or in the main striker position.

Fans might be a different ball game. But only till he scores a couple of important goals.

On his wages, any more than that would be absolutely unjustifiable in a FFP age for a wantaway player.

If it was up to me, I wouldn't be going after Rooney and I don't think that the transfer will happen either but I think that the club have taken the decision that United can either cut their losses and a huge amount off the wage bill while we improve the strikeforce or he will stay and be an expensive problem for next season.
You make it sound like we are struggling for cash.

35 million MAX.

I could live without getting Rooney - for us it's a win/win situation. We either get him and improve our strikeforce or he stays and sews seeds of dissent amongst United's squad for the next season. He has passed the point of no return already.
13M/year is what his current contract is worth for. So that makes it 26M for his contract alone. Plus his value which would be easily worth 20M. So that's AT LEAST 46M that you lot would be paying to United for Rooney.

What seeds of dissent? Stop reading the tabloids and believing the absolute guff they print. Rooney is a popular and well liked member of the squad and hasn't behaved poorly in all this.

It depends how much you want Rooney, if you don't want him a lot, then you're not going to get him because we are absolutely not in the business of helping you.

Honestly, you can talk to your hearts content about wages and bollocks like that but if the club for a second believes that Rooney is not going to be professional and will cause you aren't making a ridiculous offer we will sell abroad for a massive cut down fee.

I think you need to get it in to your head, the earlier on the better, that selling to Chelsea is something we do not want to do. It will not happen unless the money you offer is so high that it makes it something that we want to do. All talk of value and what Rooney is worth is a distraction, because it does not matter in this deal.

Wayne Rooney has only himself to blame as departure from Manchester United to Chelsea seems inevitable

The saga now enveloping the career of Wayne Rooney is a lot less complicated than it might look. At its heart is a beautifully simple truth which England’s leading footballer cannot dodge. Without performance there is no power...

Very good article written by Paul Hayward, I agree with practically all of what he says on the issue.

I would imagine Rooney at United will be a pretty toxic combination next season after all that has happened.

How do you know this to be any more true than what is in the papers?

I have always been under the impression that Rooney doesn't get on with Rio. I'd be surprised if Rooney's proximity to Cole didn't cause some issues.

How much he's liked I take from video interviews and things I've seen in manutd.com or MUTV and as for his conduct David Moyes stated that he came back from preseason in good shape, fit and was training well. I don't see why he should lie.

That really is a very good summary of the situation i think, such common sense has been all too rare throughout this.

If the Sunday Supplement was on in the summer he'd soon have Ashton and anyone from the Mirror looking a bit daft.

That doesn't have anything to do with his attitude towards the club/manager and other players though. What I think people are getting at is that if he is made to stay, knowing what we know about him being a spoilt little diva can you really see him putting in 100% and not causing trouble if he is made to stay against his wishes?

He's only had one poor season at the club and that poor season was much better than most other players we have. It's not as if he's been this overpaid millstone around our necks dragging us down.

Much better than most?

Who then makes up this group of first team regulars failing to meet expectations and to a significantly greater extent than Rooney [pre-eminent at the club prior to 12/13]?

I'm assuming you'll have some wingers in there to start.

Spoilt little diva is your very biased opinion. We all know you dont like him but nobody associated with the club has implied he is anything like that. And no I don't think he would cause trouble, I think he would get on with job professionally, there is nothing to imply that wouldn't be the case. The only thing I'd be concerned about is a bad reaction (booing) from our fans affecting his game as he tends to wear his heart on his sleeve.

Anyone who calls themselves a winger or a CM not called Carrick. And other striker not called RVP I guess too. Given he can play either up front or somewhere in the midfield by comparing him to a lot of those players he didn't do as bad as the hype suggests. By most standard's Rooney's season wasn't poor. By his standard, it was. But let's not whitewash history suddenly to paint him as a player we'll be fortunate to get rid of. He's been consistently for the vast majority of his eight seasons with us not only one of the top players at the club but one of the top players in the country.

So wanting to leave because he isn't the main man (IF that is why) isn't the behaviour of a spoilt little diva, thinking he doesn't have anything to prove isn't the behaviour of a spoilt little diva? Refusing to play after SAFs comments isn't spoilt? Wanting to leave rather than earn his place in the side isn't spoilt? Regardless of my personal opinion of him he IS a spoilt brat if those things are true, and the likelihood of them ALL being wrong is very small indeed.

And if we take as a given that he wants to leave because he was dropped for the Real match, and wasn't being played where he feels he should, (again spoilt thinking he knows better than the best manager ever) you really think he is just going to shut up and play like we know he can if he is made to stay against his wishes? I wish I had your optimism.

I've said this before but Rooney's game has had to change almost by the season as he has a new partner almost every year.

Just look at the list of full-time strike partner's he's had at his time the club.

RvN
Saha
Ronaldo
Tevez
Berbatov
Hernandez
Welbeck
RVP

....not many similar types of player there. Each one must have required a tremendous adjustment to the other. Each one of them, by and large, he's been successful with. Another seldom spoken about quality of his game that'll be dismissed now he's apparently some whiny bitch not as good as Messi.

How many "ifs" do you need to write before you realise that none of those things are even remotely certain? Feel free to continue to take the "ifs" as concrete though, because it panders to your bias. I think he's perfectly entitled to speak to SAF about his position in the team - given that SAF never said and we know he didn't hand a transfer request in. You dislike him so strongly that everything negative you read you latch onto to justify your stance. And he doesn't need to "shut up and play" given that he's not been vocal in any if this. He reported back for preseason in good condition and is training well, why do you think a fuss is going to be kicked up all on a sudden?

If all you are bidding is £25million then his fee won't diminish next year. We could easily get that with one year left on his contract, possibly even more because it's unlikely he'll be as poor as he was last season

Well, if his lifestyle doesn't change, Rooney may have even a poorer season. He can also get seriously injured. A lot of things can happen in a course of a season that may affect his value in a transfer market. The only certainty is that he'll still cost whichever club he's at a pretty solid chunk of cash in wages.

By the way, Blanc confirmed that PSG have no interest in Rooney, so that's one less club for CFC to worry about. Unless Madrid becomes involved, I can see us making a couple of bigger bids in the coming weeks and probably signing Rooney for around 30-35m close to the end of the transfer window.

Also, do United even need to replace him? Kagawa is supposed to be the player for the position Rooney played at last season. As for strikers, RVP is the first choice, with Welbeck and Chicharito probably quietly happy at getting more playing time with Rooney out of the picture.

You obviously put RVP and and Carrick ahead of him but is that it? I'm not at all sure you'd find many on here putting Rooney in their top five performers of last season let alone third in line.

His historical achievements have to be respected of that there is no question however at this stage in his career with uncertainty surrounding the player both on and off the pitch, we can also see this as an opportunity thanks to the transfers made by Fergie in his last summer at United.

ANyone think Rooney's 'injury' was a fake, and he was sent home because he was acting disruptive?

For me, top 5 players last season were RVP, Carrick, De Gea, Rafael, Vidic.

Some of the worst were Valencia and Nani.

I'd put Rooney's effort somewhere between the two.

I stress the Ifs because I don't know for certain that any of it is true, just as much as you can't be certain that they aren't. If you think the quotes about being angry and hurt, and the constant little titbits being fed to talksport are from anyone other than rooneys camp with his knowledge Id be interested to hear where they come from?
As for asking about his role In the team, agreed he is perfectly entitled to ask the question, no one likes being kept in the dark and I wouldn't expect Rooney to either. The important part is how he responds to what he is told. If he is told he has to up his performances/fitness/anything else the manager cares to mention the correct response is to go away and improve those things, not stamp your feet and say you have nothing to prove. Personally he was starting to win me over by saying nothing and apparently training hard and being in great shape, and had it been left at that Id be perfectly happy to swallow my opinions and say keep him, but then it began again, poor wayne feels hurt and confused boo hoo. If he didn't say that Im sure in these litigious times we live in a denial would have been forthcoming by know along with the threat of legal action against those naughty bad men making things up about him.

Good points. You may be right. I don't think hostile home fans will be a significant factor, be it said. But the maturity point is a good one. He may not respond well to a situation like the one we're talking about - that is a very real possibility. My hope - if we get to this point - is that Moyes (or someone else, for that matter) can convince him that doing his very best to prove himself is the only (and the only profitable, in any sense) thing to do. But he may be too thick, too big-headed or too "angry and confused" to realize this - sure.

My main worry is, frankly, that we let Chelsea have him. I think that should be avoided at, almost, any cost. As I've said before, that's part sentiment (I don't want to see him in that shirt after all these years, it would be a fecking travesty; I don't want Paul Stretford to make a penny on the transfer; I don't want the club to grant Rooney (or his agent) what I consider to be an unacceptable wish) and part sheer pragmatism: He will bang in goals for them, pure and simple.

The other worry would be that even if someone did get through to him to the point where he knuckled down for the season, if he doesn't sign any extension then come next summer we are in a position where he only has a year left on his contract and I think him and Stretford would still take advantage of that no matter how well the season has went. To me we either need to sell this summer or make the commitment of at least a years extension.

I agree that selling him to Chelsea would be a very risky choice, the ideal solution would be to sell him to one of the Spanish or French clubs and start fresh next season.

At the end of the day Rooney could put this to bed in 140 characters or less.

'The stories are LIES. MUFC is where i'm happy + staying, roll on #21' etc.

Having said that, you seen the abuse Coleen's been getting on Twitter? Some of it is pretty horrendous. Even if he wanted to stay and it was all bollocks, the fans have made it clear they don't want him.

What kind of abuse?

I would love it of the club refused to sell him which means he needs to force himself back into the team. His recent injury means he misses start of season so will have to play his way back into starting team.

Once back in form sell him for top dollar in the xmas window to the highest bidder, whether he wants to leave or not.

I dont want him at United anymore, but I don't want us to succumb to his wishes.

Well.

People using @ColeenRoo to tag her into #thingsthatangerandconfusewaynerooney and putting 'the big black baby that fell out of your scouse minge'.
'Can you please tell your husband we don't want you or him here and that he's a fat bald cnut.'
One guy even said 'give me your address' followed by a barrage of abuse.

It started off as people mocking Wayne through her but some of it became a bit vile tbh.

That is pretty sick to be honest.

Disgusting stuff.

It started off playful really, stuff like 'Don't go round Terry's house when you move to London', 'what's your favourite song from Shrek' and stuff, but then it quickly devolved into just straight out abuse.

One guy was commenting on pictures of her kids taking the piss out of them, which for me is just bang out of order whether they're a celebrity or not.

That's not cool at all. People like that should be strung up.

Damn right, that's the sort of thing that deserves a slap.
