Saying 'it's Rooney or bust' is a really daft thing to say going into a transfer negotiation.
Quite the opposite....if you convince the player he is wanted at the expense of all others, then you pander to his ego. Players like to be wanted and Rooney quite clearly fits into this category. Jose is a master of manipulation and I'm sure Rooney will have enjoyed his comments.
Indeed, Pep said the exact same thing about Thiago.
It's one thing saying it about a player with a release clause. Jose's comments would have no doubt appealed to Rooney, but wouldn't have done anything to reduce our asking price.
Right, basically what he wanted then.

Of course he will have other targets, he's not stupid.
He's on a massive contract that still has 2 full seasons to run. We always have been in the driving seat. You're missing the point there.
I'm not on about Rooney, he obviously wants away so those comments don't change anything in terms of that, his head is already turned and he wants to leave the club.
Saying its Rooney or bust just confirms that Chelsea's last hope of bringing in a top tier forward rests on Rooney - Cavani, Falcao and Lewandowski are off the market, so Rooney is the last chance.
That puts us in the driving seat regarding the asking price.

Chelsea payed 50 million for an out of form Torres. That means we shouldn't settle for anything less!

Wait, so because there are no more 'names' out there for them to go for, this means that we're not in a position to be in command regarding how much we're asking for our player?'Regarding the asking price'
No we weren't. If Chelsea said to us, 'we'll offer you £30million and no more, if you say no that's fine - we'll just bid for Cavani or Lewandowski'.
That doesn't put us in the driving seat, it is very much a take it or leave it offer.
Now they can't say that. They need a striker and he is the only one left, that clearly weakens their position at negotiations.
Jose isn't stupid as I said. He isn't someone who puts all his eggs in one basket. I'm sure Rooney is his preferred option of course, but he won't be his only option. There are other strikers to pursue....Higuain, Suarez etc. The pull of Mourinho and the wages Chelsea are prepared to offer will always leave them with potential targets.
I don't think Chelsea are concerned about the price, they can afford a huge fee and wages. The comments are designed to target the player directly and I'm sure it strengthened their hand. If United don't want to sell they won't, the Portuguese knows this.
Rooney is quite obviously Chelsea's plan C. I'm sure they'd have taken either Cavani, Neymar or Falcao if they could get them.
With those players tied up early in the window Rooney's situation is a blessing for them.
He could have just as easily said that to him/his agent over the phone. His main concern right now should be to try and get us to play nice; not going to happen when you go around making such bold, public statements on our players. Especially at such a crucial time for us in terms of image and perception.
Wait, so because there are no more 'names' out there for them to go for, this means that we're not in a position to be in command regarding how much we're asking for our player?
We can command however much we want for Rooney. Them saying 'well if you don't accept it we'll go elsewhere' puts us very much in the driving seat. Them threatening to not buy our players gives them no sway at all.
We will NEVER get £50m from Chelsea for him. I'd be happy with not a penny less than about £35m just to get rid of him, but he would strengthen Chelsea massively.I wouldn't say so, they know that we're going to be far worse to deal with than either Atletico or Napoli.
The fact they were willing to pay that much cash for those two though should guide how much we want for Rooney. Club would be mugs to take anything under £50m.
Yeh i see people on Twitter saying we're hypocrites because we took van Persie and he did the same thing to Arsenal, when it wasn't the same situation at all.Yeh I remember the abuse Fletch got too. Was pretty sickening. That's totally different to the Rooney situation though. Fletch loved the club, many just believed he wasn't goof enough. Rooney's been a bit of a dick. That's the difference.
That being said, I don't "hate" Rooney. I just wish he'd be honest and admit the real reason for wanting to leave is that he wants a fresh challenge. Because that's how I see it.
Very few of these people are stupid, but they still say strange things. For all we know he may have a blank cheque with Rooney in which case saying Rooney is his only target doesn't really affect his position at all.
Higuain is a huge step down from Rooney. I agree with you on Suarez, but he fecking hates it in England and has been heavily linked with Madrid. There will always be other targets but its undeniable that the original four top strikers that were avilable has been whittled down to one.
No you're missing the point. The first paragraph makes no sense. I am literally saying the complete opposite - the fact that the only top target left for Chelsea is Rooney gives us considerably more leverage in negotiations. How is that even complicated? It's fecking obvious. If there is a large supply of something then it drives the price down, if a commodity is rare it drives the price up.
Chelsea need a striker and there is only one world class player available, whereas previously there were four. That gives us more leverage.
We will NEVER get £50m from Chelsea for him. I'd be happy with not a penny less than about £35m just to get rid of him, but he would strengthen Chelsea massively.
No you're missing the point.
He's our player, under contract, that we do not need to sell. Are you forgetting Chelsea have Torres, Ba and Lukaku? They're not exactly struggling for strikers.
The fact that they want him and we have him under contract gives us all the leverage we need. Chelsea aren't going to think 'shit.....we'd better offer the £40m they want because we have no strikers for the season if we don't get him'.
Your original comment was that no more strikers of name out there (Cavani, Falcao etc) means that we're in the driving seat regarding price.I am not saying we need to sell him, what the feck are you on about?
But if we do choose to sell him, then the fact Chelsea are desperate for him strengthens our position.
It's common knowledge Chelsea need a striker, if you think Mourinho will start the season with Torres as his first choice forward you're a bit clueless.
A potential buyer threatening to go elsewhere because there's others available isn't leverage. If i'm selling an Escort that's worth £500, i'm not going to accept bids of £300 just because if i say no the buyer can go elsewhere for it.
Your original comment was that no more strikers of name out there (Cavani, Falcao etc) means that we're in the driving seat regarding price.
If you can't understand that someone who doesn't need to sell something can set the price at whatever they want to regardless of the buyers circumstances then i don't know what i can say.
I never said that you said we need to sell him. I never said that Torres was first choice forward.
If we want £40m for Rooney say, and Chelsea offer £30m, it doesn't 'put us in the driving seat' to demand the full £40m because Chelsea have no other targets out there. We're in the driving seat because the price is £40m and if you don't pay it then see you later. If we wanted £40m for Rooney we're not gonna consider lower offers just because if we don't sell Chelsea can go buy elsewhere.
A players price is his price, regardless of how many other strikers are out there. 'Well we'll go and get someone else instead' is not negotiation power for a club wanting to buy your player. If you don't understand that then it's you that's clueless.
Does it not seem a bit strange that a player who claims he only wants to be loved is prepared to join Chelsea, who allegedly have been in for Hulk, Cavani, Falcao and Neymar before him...........
