We'll get him and it will be a straight cash deal. You'll fleece us no doubt (that's the whole point of all this sillyness) but we've not really got a limit to what we can spend. He'll be a Chelsea player soon enough.

How do you feel about that, duffer?

That remains to be seen, on his day he can be outstanding, but his recent fitness will be a major concern, also for me his best days are behind him.

Can't wait to see the back of him now. All this hassle is ridiculous and the release of his quotes yesterday were cowardly. He's a cnut of the highest order and I hope we get shot of him soon.

If Rooney wants to go to Chelsea he can go as long as we make them pay ridiculous money which we then use towards getting Fabregas and a left winger plus a tough midfielder, (Fellaini if Moyes wants him). I would not really care that Chelsea were strengthened as long as we had a formidable squad that all want to play for Utd. I was hoping Rooney might come to his senses but I reckon he has made his decision so lets get it over with quickly and move on and if they get it right( Moyes and Woodward big test for them) Utd can be a better balanced side come the start of the season.

What has he said? I've not seen any quotes from Rooney about all this.

Sorry, the angry and confused stuff. Did it when he got back away from the team, and then released it through his management and Sky. It's becoming embarrassing, and I hope he's away ASAP.

It's a shame Spurs don't want Rooney...theycould have him plus 15m and we get Bale

I think Mata is an incredible player. But I wouldn't take him and 10m for Rooney. We already have Kagawa who will have one season under his belt in the Prem (and he was pretty ridiculous at Dortmund). I'm sure we could find a place for Mata, but it will be quite hard finding a replacement for Rooney. I honestly don't see how it would be good business to sell him to a rival unless we get a shitload of cash to spunk on Ronaldo, Bale or someone (not many are there) in that class. Rooney's had ups and downs in form and his attitude leaves much to be desired, but there's no denying that he can be a match-winner and if his mentality is right, there are few better. If, for the sake of argument, he were to sign for Chelsea for 25m or some shit like that and get his mojo back we'd do much better by just running down his contract. Chelsea's frontline, bar Lukaku is pretty tame. Now that Jose has come out all ballsy in the media and declared it's Rooney or bust, with the cash reserves stolen from the Russian people, we can easily hold out for a fat check.

They spunked 50m on Torres. Despite Rooney's contract running out in 2 years, I don't see much value in strengthening them for money that can not go half the way to replace him. 40m, final offer.

Mata will take up the position Rooney likely would have this year. Wide left-ish, withdrawn forward. Kagawa will probably play deeper and pull the strings in front of Carrick and a yet-to-be-signed midfielder. Zaha/Valencia/Nani/Young wide right when we need width, Welbz partnering Van Persie and having a dynamic attacking 3 of Van Persie, Welbeck and Mata the other times.

50m. He is, was, and always will be, a better player than Torres. If that's what they paid for the ladyboy, its not unreasonable to expect the same for Rooney. They have an endless pit of money, so no way should they be getting Manchester United's best player over the last decade, on the cheap.

It's refreshing to see that not everyone on the Caf thinks 20m would be a reasonable price for Rooney.

I'm actually challenging you to find anybody on the Caf who thinks 20m would be a reasonable price for Rooney.

Not counting those who want rid of him asap regardless of price because they hate the very sight of him and his bald coif.

God, no. He's worth more than that & the smug levels issuing from José would suffocate the population of London.

You don't suffocate in Jose's musk, you breathe it in deep and revel in its magnificence.

Anyway, serious question, what's Rooney go to do from here to get back in the United fans good books. Anyway back for him

Mata is a quality player, and if we did sign him he would make a difference to us. I don't agree with how Rooney has treated the club at times, but on his day he is as good an all-round player in the League for me. Chelsea have stated that he is there number one transfer target, and he would improve them considerably in a position that they lack a bit of quality. Lukaku is a quality player, but Rooney is a class above on his day. We don't know the full extent of his issues at United, but what we do know is that if he strikes a relationship with the right people at Chelsea, and he regains his confidence, then they have a quality player on there hands. Anything less than 30M for me isn't good enough, and I hope the club look at things in a similar sort of way.

For whatever reason he didn't have a great year last season, but his contribution for the club can't be faulted. He's made over 400 appearances for the club, and his goal scoring record speaks for himself. He has been an instrumental part of our success since he signed for the club, and it's a shame that people will look back on his United career negatively, because he has done a lot for us. If he can regain his form Chelsea have a world class player at there disposal, and when you look at the fees they have paid for players in the past, I hope United take that into consideration when holding out for a price.

The Caf: Where no news is bad news.

Finish his career by signing a new 10 year deal whereby donating his entire 160k 200k 240k 180k 350k 400k 250k/pw wage to the starving population of Africa?

It's Wayne Rooney or bust for Chelsea admits Mourinho after Manchester United reject first offer

By Marty Lipton
17th July 2013

Joe Mourinho insisted Wayne Rooney is Chelsea’s only striker target as the Stamford Bridge side went to war with Manchester United over the England man, writes Martin Lipton in Bangkok.

An astonishing day of claim and counter-claim ended with the west Londoners accusing Premier League champions United of spreading outright lies over their bid for Rooney.

The Blues are expected to increase their offer to £25million this week, but the clubs are at daggers drawn.

Meanwhile, following the first match of his second spell in charge of Chelsea - a 1-0 win over Singha All-Stars here in Thailand, Mourinho made a clear and unequivocal pitch for the heartstrings of the Scouse star.

“We have not bid for anyone else,” he said. “And we won’t. It is Rooney or bust.

“I think that this situation now is clear, because nothing is a secret any more.

“Chelsea is interested in the player. Chelsea made an official bid.

“What we did, we did officially, between our club and Man United, and we have nothing more to say about it.

“We can say nothing else. There is nothing else to say.

“We want the player. We are interested in the player. We made the bid.”

Mourinho’s words came after Chelsea admitted making a written, cash-only bid of £20m for the 27-year-old, and dismissed suggestions from United that they had offered £10m plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz.

Those claims brought a withering statement from the Europa League champions, who are furious at what they believe was a blatant attempt to destabilise Mata and Luiz in the build-up to the season.

But Mourinho confirmed that Rooney is the man he wants to spark another title-winning campaign in SW6.

Mourinho, ready to sell Fernando Torres or Demba Ba, and perhaps even both, to create space for Rooney - added: “I have to finish the story.

“The bid is there. The club knows we want the player. The player has to know we made a bid for him. Now it’s up to them.”

United rejected Chelsea’s bid instantly, and have again insisted he is not for sale, but the striker no longer feels he has any future at Old Trafford.

Stamford Bridge is Rooney's preferred choice and Mourinho’s public act of reciprocation seemingly leaves it as just a matter of time before England’s best player makes the domestic game's most controversial switch for decades.

After a Romelu Lukaku penalty beat Singha All-Stars, Mourinho insisted there was no "special feeling" about taking charge of a Chelsea side for the first time since September 2007.

He said the Premier League opener, against Hull at Stamford Bridge on August 18, is his focus.

"(It was) not for me a special feeling,"the former Porto, Inter Milan and Real Madrid boss said. "I've been too many years in football. I've always felt connected with Chelsea, even when I was not here.

"It's just good to be back, but I'm waiting for Hull City, my first match when we play for points.

"Defensively we were very strong. We moved the ball quite well, but we didn't create many chances. "We are not sharp at the moment, we have a lot to improve, but it was okay - it was a good training session.

"I'm okay with the game and that performance."

Chelsea created a number of half-chances and had plenty of playmakers in evidence, with Kevin de Bruyne impressive. Yet the only goal came from the penalty spot when rampaging right-back Wallace was hauled down.

On Lukaku, who spent last term on loan at West Brom, Mourinho added: "A goal is a goal, but it's not significant. A penalty is not significant. For me, it's important he worked hard.

"(Demba) Ba worked hard. They worked for the team and tried some movement for us. A friendly is a friendly, but for confidence it's good for a striker to score a goal."

Chelsea made nine changes at half-time, but midfielder Frank Lampard took no part at all, despite being named in the starting XI.

The England international appeared pitch-side with a heavily-strapped right ankle and will return to training after the squad travel to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

"He was feeling discomfort on his Achilles, so we decided he wouldn't play," Mourinho explained. "In competition, you have to risk sometimes; in pre-season, no. The worst thing that can happen is an injury while taking a risk.

"Frank will rest like everyone tomorrow and in two days' time he'll be back in training."

Mourinho also confirmed Wallace will go out on-loan in Europe this season - Chelsea have options at right-back with Branislav Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta, and the Brazilian is unlikely to get a visa.

The Blues' players involved in the Confederations Cup - Azpilicueta, Juan Mata, Fernando Torres, John Obi Mikel, David Luiz and Oscar - will meet up with the squad for the first time in London on July 28.

My first impression of Lipton's latest article, was that Joe Mourinho doesn't sound half so suave and all conquering.

If we swapped him for Mata and Cash, over the course of 5-7+ years, we'd have the better deal, by some distance I'd imagine. It won't happen though.

Personally I hope Real step in. They need a striker and is be £1000 better off from a free promo bet.

He could say he is willing to fight for his future at the club and he'd instantly claw back a bit of credit. No public climb down or anything that might humiliate him is necessary, but the bare minimum is that he accepts he has to earn a place on the team like everyone else.

Saying 'it's Rooney or bust' is a really daft thing to say going into a transfer negotiation.

Yeah, fans are fond of saying stuff like "He will no longer be dead to me IF he climbs Mt Everest with a picture of Sir Bobby on his back, and if he crawls around Old Trafford begging every supporter's forgiveness!" But really...as long as he stays & make sufficient effort in maches, I'm alright with him. Apologies mean nothing, as he's shown in the past, so what would be the point in further lies? It's the football that matters...

Apologies mean nothing, as you say. And he doesn't actually have much to apologize for, formally speaking: He hasn't said anything of note at all, not on record. If he stays, plays well, scores goals - well, I doubt most fans will keep banging on about what he reportedly felt according to "sources" at some point this summer. There's a huge difference between the people on here who claim to hate him with a vengeance, and match going fans who may or may not boo him at Old Trafford. In terms of fans' reactions only the latter matters.

It's not so much this that is the strange thing for me. It's the level of expectations from the fans. As though their personal interests NEED to be satisfied by seeing some form of repentance for a place. All in all, it's a football club. Managed by real people and the football is played by real people.

There are so many off-field and unrelated things dragged into the fandom these days that it is becoming ludicrous. Everyone has a voice and everyone wants to speak with intent. I'm sure Suarez while a complete and utter twat on the field is just your every day normal guy off the field like everyone else. I'm sure he doesn't rake his seven hundred quid sneakers down the back of the old lady in the supermarket because she's taking to long to select her fruit and vege and then go down clutching his ankle gesturing toward the produce guy. It's all a bit too much for some people.

But hey, it's already been said in this thread that he's pretty much as big a cnut as Suarez which in itself boggles my mind.

Very well said, couldn't agree more. One of the main differences between the good old days, when men were men and footballers loved their club more than money, is that back then we knew feck all about their personalities. Well, we still don't - but through media exposure on a whole different level, and twatter and whatnot, we seem to think we do. You can "follow" players on a daily basis these days, whereas you'd get the odd interview in the paper before. It makes a huge difference.

You're going too far the other way, because some of the disappointment in Rooney is legitimate, namely that regarding his apparent unwillingness to work for a place on the team. That's not really off-field, that's a team matter. I don't want an apology from Rooney but a statement that he is willing to fight to play for this club would be appreciated.

The bottom line, for me, is that no matter what happens I'll have to get on with it. Booing Rooney would be pointless if he was staying here for more years.
