According to all of you Rooney is so brilliant and we shouldn't be selling him to a rival then if he is such a commodity why has his relationship with the club been allowed to break down??

Ibrahimovic was at monster wages at Inter and yet they fleeced Barcelona for every single cent. There are plenty of examples. Again, going by your logic, we couldn't have asked for 80m for Ronaldo: he wanted out, he was on huge wages and Real Madrid almost doubled those wages but still paid 80m. Rooney isn't worth 80m, obviously, but 40m? Definitely, at the very least.

Can't really use Ronaldo as an example as he is an exceptional talent. Take your point on Ibra though. It goes on a player by player basis. At the time Ibra was one of the hottest properties in Europe. As of now Rooney's come off a very poor season, is desperate to leave, and has just two years left on his contract, which is apparently over 200k a week. That doesn't put us in a strong position to demand £40 million. Although I'd want near that from rival clubs certainly, abroad I'd happily sell him for £25 mil.

Because he's a fecking idiot?

Well if he doesn't want to be here and we are happy to run the risk of his contract running down, that suggests we don't have that much faith in him either. That idea is contrary to people taking the 'we won't sell Rooney' comments to heart but it's quite clear to me he is not wanted here. The relationship has broken down, we should end it. If we don't want are best players leaving then we perhaps have to feed their ego's a bit more like we did with Ronaldo and Barca do with Messi.

How much did you pay for RVP a year ago? Is he a 20-25 million player?

A 29 year old with a pretty bad injury record and a year left on his contract. I'd say £25m was about right all things considered, we could and should be holding out for more for Rooney.

He's two years older than Rooney, he had only one year left on his contract and had a history of serious injury problems (and whisper it quietly but it wasn't a transfer between two direct rivals). Rooney's appearance record for Manchester United is far superior to that of RVP at Arsenal, he's won a shedload of trophies, played and proved himself at the very highest level - unlike RVP who never really did it in the CL knockout stages, for various reasons (injury, shit team, whatever).

But RVP was coming off the best season of his career where he singlehandedly carried Arsenal into a top four finish.

Rooney has been on a downward slide for quite some time now, his best seasons were a few years ago.

Oh for feck's sake, he scored 34 goals in 2011/12!

If Rooney is on this amazing downward slide with the best seasons of his career behind him, why does the most famous manager in the world with the one of the deepest pocketed owners out there want to sign him so much?

People don't think United 'need' the money from this deal, and believe he should go for any 'reasonable' fee...but if we don't need the money why the hell would we let him get his way without a fight? It's the principle that matters, and every principle can be compromised at a certain price. With United in pole position this summer and Chelsea in desperate need of a quality striker, there is no way we should bend over for both them and the player.

Could Chelsea potentially need him as an extra home-grown player in their squad for the champions league? maybe not so much this season but beyond that Lampard and Terry will maybe last 1 more season, will Bertrand stay if he can't displace Cole...?

It may be further incentive for them to push to get him and give us big bucks is all. They don't have many quality home-grown players under 30 and that might make them keen to get him so they don't "do a city" and end up padding out their squad with the likes of Scott Sinclair.

Just a thought.

He did?

Ok, 26 million, but that's it.

I guess most of you feel Rooney is a player that is still wanted at the club? I think the relationship has broken down, hence why we should sell ASAP otherwise I would agree with the rest of you price wise. You can't really push a hard bargain with a player you don't want, the fact their first bid was 20 million I doubt they ever reach a 40 million bid.

p.s I wonder how other clubs/fans view him talent wise??

Jose's remarks are always calculated, he probably said that mainly for Rooney's benefit. The cat's out of the bag, so to speak, so Mourinho publicly confirms he wants Rooney at Chelsea, which means, it's time for Rooney and his people to do their bit in order to facilitate the move. Like putting in a transfer request.

Rooney doesn't seem to want to do that because he wants his bonus, however even if that is the case I don't think that will stop us wanting top dollar for him, I just can't see us selling him to a direct rival for £25-30M.

I see your point, my view is the club don't want him we are not selling a player we want to keep like when it was Ronaldo, we are selling a player we don't want. We lose strength from a bargaining position. I don't see it as bending over for them it's the price of business imo.

If we do sell Rooney to Chelsea, which I think would be stupid, it would be unlikely to be until the last days of the transfer window imo.

Alienated -cause (someone) to feel isolated or estranged

I think that accurately describes how Rooney has been feeling the last 2-3 months.
Yes i'm aware of what the word means.

You didn't explain however the last bit of the quote 'by the club' which is more what i was getting at.

10 million is nothing to this club.

Is that why we apparently asked Rooney to take a wage cut and reportedly wouldn't go any higher with our bids for Hazard and Lucas last year. It's incredible how naive and out of touch with reality some of our fans are.

So that doesn't strike you as being a rather convenient exit strategy then? Or perhaps a position adopted to placate fans who might be angry at a player manoeuvering for a transfer, a way to make the club seem like the bad guys?

Whether people love Rooney or despise him, I'm staggered that they cannot see what is going on. When Luis Suarez was accused of racially abusing Evra, Suarez's history & his anything-for-a-win attitude to football made me believe that Suarez was guilty; not because I favour United, but because of the balance of probabilities given Suarez's behavorial record. Similarly, Rooney has a record of lying to either get what he wants or to lessen fans' criticism of his actions. So please, after all the praise & encouragement Moyes and former & present players have publicly given Rooney, how on earth is he feeling 'estranged', 'angry and confused'? Why is he, unlike the rest of our players, unprepared to fight for his place under a new manager, and why has he selected only part of Moyes' most recent statement, the part which he's pretending to be offended by? Conclusion: he wants to leave, but he doesn't want the criticism or the blame for instigating a move. Balance of probablities...

Make that a bit clearer next time. Not giving him a new contract, recent comments which haven't been so convincing. His whole initial problem with Fergie. This has all led to him being alienated.

Bah, so many fancy words for saying "Rooney's always been a cnut".

We are signing bigger contracts with sponsors each year, are debt is decreasing well. We have the third highest revenue of any club in the world. While posting a record third quarter turnover. I don't think we would lose any sweat over 10 million pounds.

We didn't bid higher for Hazard because Fergie said he wasn't paying an agent 6 million and PSG accepted our Lucas offer but he chose them over us. Next time know what your talking about mate.

p.s We told Rooney to take a pay cut because we think he is making too much not because we don't have the money.

If we believe what we've been told, his initial problem started with the fact that he bitched about being benched. That's his doing, not the club's.

If they wanted to pay 40 million plus Cavani and Falcao where available yet they baulked at the fee, but no they are going to pay 50 million for Wayne Rooney who might be physically past his peak?? Torres is still there as we speak he s a reminder that these big money transfers don't always work they seem less willing to just throw out the cash recently, Rooney has risk attached to him.

You're saying we should let him go for 20million, there's a big jump from there to 50million.

Less willing to throw out the cash? They paid over 30million for Hazard last year, who might have youth on his side but he had never kicked a ball in the PL. Do you have any actual evidence that the fee was the reason either Cavani - 1 year younger than Rooney and went for 50million, or Falcao - same age as Rooney and went for 50million, didn't go to chelsea?

You have made some good points there.
He wants to leave that is correct, he has seen his status at the club decline and like some have said after his 9 years of service he feels he doesn't have to prove anything (I disagree strongly). I feel he has wanted to leave since speaking to Fergie and us getting Moyes was the icing on the cake, he has not been offered a new contract (with two years left) and has struggled somewhat the past season. I don't think the club wants him to stay do you?? I'm not a particular big Rooney fan a few weeks ago I was saying he should stay, but with things being so obvious now I think it's best he leaves. This is why I am saying we should let him go for 20-25 million rather than holding out for 50 million (which I doubt we get with only one club making bids)

It is a difficult position because it's a poisonous element in the dressing room + we may not get the best out of him if he stays. But selling a player for far less than he's worth to a direct rival would be stupid. I would sell to Arsenal or Spurs for £25m probably, because the rest of their squads aren't good enough to be serious threats, but Chelsea are too strong already to go selling them Rooney on the cheap.

I think we would quite like to make it more difficult for Chelsea to meet FFP. £10m is not just some arbitrary insignificant figure. It could pay some of our players wages for 2-3 years.

Either way, we're a business, £10m is an awful lot of money for a business, whether or not it's a lot of money for a player.

Every transfer should be treated individually imo, we have no idea how much a club wants a player. With Hazard they where in a bidding war with City and us ( if you believe Hazard) the price was high, but they chose to pay it they may not chose to do so this time. From the outside looking in, I wouldn't think United particularly wants to keep Rooney despite comments from Moyes. That makes it harder to get his actual market value. Rooney doesn't want to stay here, that means we lose risk losing him for less next year or nothing in two years. I don't have any inside information but the normal places stated the top clubs wanted Falcao and Cavani but they where priced out hence why both are in France now. I don't see us getting 50 million considering the circumstances. Hence why I don't see the point in holding out.

An opening bid of 20 million either suggest they are not being serious, or their is no way they value him at 50 million.

I agree there, but again 10 million to us is not money we will lose sleep over. I see 35 million as the highest they go so this is directed more to people saying at least 40 million. Do you see Rooney here on September 1st??

Mourinho asked general question about World Cup by Malaysian press. 'If players are second choice for their club, they are in trouble'

Blatant blatant tapping up hahaaa.

hmmm I see your point, like you said it is the weighing up the pro's and con's. If he stays here will his presence do more damage than selling him for 25 million? We get rid of a player who has us in the paper for all the wrong reasons, no more he said and she said.

As a United fan i'm sick of this saga with Rooney, I just want him gone. I do think he will make them a stronger team so perhaps we should hold out while building towards a team that doesn't have Rooney starting so that means bringing in a Bale/Fabregas calibre player.

How annoyed would you be if he went for 25 million next year or in January??

I agree with your points regarding not selling to cheap but in the end we first have to worry about our own business.

It's obvious that he's mentally at another club, if it's Chelsea or someone else doesn't matter. We can't hold on to a player who are so expensive, his wages can easily pay for two new signings and the fee we get for him can probably pay off someone like Fabregas. And I'm sure that a motivated midfield ace is more valuable to us then a player who want's to leave. All in all as long the bid for Rooney isn't scandalous its better to sell him then doing nothing.

It was clear. He's alienated himself.

If we believe what we've been told, his initial problem started with the fact that he bitched about being benched. That's his doing, not the club's.

That's true. Let's say he FEELS like he has been alienated by the club that is all that really matters to him now.

And how much should we spend on them.

I really hope you're not going to say we should let Rooney go to Chelsea for 25million but then break the bank for Bale or Cesc because, well, that would be retarded.
