You're going too far the other way, because some of the disappointment in Rooney is legitimate, namely that regarding his apparent unwillingness to work for a place on the team. That's not really off-field, that's a team matter. I don't want an apology from Rooney but a statement that he is willing to fight to play for this club would be appreciated.

That being the key term. I don't disagree with your sentiment, not at all. But we don't know that Rooney is, in fact, unwilling to work for his place. Someone has apparently said that he has apparently said that he doesn't have anything to prove. Which could mean anything, if it's even remotely accurate.

He might be pissed that Moyes has seemingly declared publicly that he is only a second option in his favoured position. His response might have been to say, to his so-called "people" that RVP can do one and that he, having been here nine years, has nothing to prove. That isn't the same as declaring himself unwilling to work hard. Then again, he may have declared just that, Stella can in hand, fag in mouth. We don't know - we mainly just use these snippets to reinforce what we already think is the case.

I just don't know how people can separate the truth from the hearsay. Are there any actual quotes in response to Moyes comments?

I have defended him at times to some extent, but his attitude towards the situation has disappointed me somewhat. Being left out of a Champions League Quater-Final against Real Madrid will have hurt him and rightfully so, but his response has been poor to say the least. That said, he was first choice a couple of years ago when he wanted out.

He's made 400+ appearances, not far off 200 goals, and has been highly influential in our success since he joined the club. Unfortunately people will choose to remember the negatives as opposed to the positives which is a shame. He's done a lot for this club alongside some great players, but his attitude has let him down at times.

I think you're giving him too much benefit of the doubt. Agree to disagree.

All fair enough. I have no trouble understanding that people are sick of both him and the saga at this point. To me, though, you can't give someone an excess of benefit (of the doubt): You either give it or you don't. As long as he hasn't actually said a single word about any of this on record, I prefer to just wait and see what will transpire.

If he's a Chelsea player by the weekend, declaring his life-long ambition to play under Mourinho - I'll provide the tar and feathers.

But you can't even back that up with a factual claim that this is the case. Sure it 'may' be, various sites report it etc etc. (Imo, not a hope in hell he wouldn't fight for his place but thats just me) but how do you fight for your place in pre-season?... This is when all of this twang usually occurs. He missed games at the back end of last season and who really 100% knows why apart from the club and it's immediate's. This hammy injury has really fecked with peoples minds.

Rooney may not himself have responded directly through an interview or Twitter, however for months now people employed by him have been speaking on his behalf. We can but assume that he is happy enough with the words or message being put across [and its popular interpretation] otherwise he would call a halt to the PR under way.

Indeed one of the most annoying lines and excuses in football is that so and so was poorly advised, how often can people hide behind that smokescreen?

Partly why this "he ha kept his own counsel throughout" doesn't stand up to much scrutiny either.

The bottom line, for me, is that no matter what happens I'll have to get on with it. Booing Rooney would be pointless if he was staying here for more years.

He would certainly be the most disliked player by his own fans that we've ever had if he stayed? Certainly in my lifetime.

Is this 100% true? I honestly don't know any of that info (nor really care in the long run) but I am intrigued anyway.

Stretford may have been directly quoted very early on in this saga but i shouldn't be willing to bet my present Barclays balance on the fact :). Generally speaking i would attribute my belief to what i thought to be a reasonable explanation for some of the reporting we've been seeing, until yesterday however when one of the programmes n Talksport [H&J IIRC] spoke of being contacted by a public relations company ahead the 'angry and confused' comments going public.

Which isn't to say that there has not been some fabrication of the news going on or massive exaggerations from the press since May, only that the likes of Richard Keys and the Mirror will not have been so committed in the theme of their coverage without cause.

Yeah. I remember people saying they hope he'd get injured so Fergie couldn't pick him and worse besides.
fecking hell. This is the first United forum i've ever been on so i wouldn't have seen it but Fletcher's always been brilliant for us.

Anyway, in answer to the original question, yes, Rooney would definitely be the most hated figure i've ever seen at the club in 26 years if he stayed. If he leaves for Chelsea you just know he's gonna get a Tevez-like reception.

Fletcher in his very early years, was a bit keek. He made a lot of mistakes and gave the ball away, a lot but SAF stuck with him, thankfully. Still he was abused week in week out by his own fans. If you think the stick Carrick,(a few years ago) Nani, Anderson and Young got was bad, you've seen feck all.

Bejesus. In my family it was always a case of 'he looks a bit rough round the edges, looks like he doesn't know what he's doing but you can tell there's a decent player in there somewhere.' Sorta a feeling of 'bless him he's young and he's trying' type of thing haha. Never knew he was treated like that. For shame!

Maybe not specifically on here, I can't say for sure but definitely the forum on the official site and other forums I was on at the time. Some of the stuff spouted about him was sick, tbh.

Poor Fletch :(

I for one hope he gets better because he's a great squad player and a good lad.

Fully agreed. Fletch has always been a strange one for me. Not technically gifted. Not an amazing passer. No real pace, flair or skill but on his day, a hell of fecking player. Just one of those lads that you can't explain how important he is/was but he played his heart out every week.

Fletcher was abused on here for years. I always defended him.

By contrast I didn't believe in Evans, but he seems to have come good although we are going for Garay.

I remember my hatred for Fletcher, I was an early teen and knew no better...

My hatred for Rooney, however, is justifiable.

Wayne Rooney is set to join Chelsea after his wife
Coleen agreed personal terms with John Terry

Well Mourinho has played his hand, he says it's Rooney or no one as far as buying a striker goes. If we do sell him to Chelsea lets squeeze them for at least Torres money.

Jose's remarks are always calculated, he probably said that mainly for Rooney's benefit. The cat's out of the bag, so to speak, so Mourinho publicly confirms he wants Rooney at Chelsea, which means, it's time for Rooney and his people to do their bit in order to facilitate the move. Like putting in a transfer request.

Exactly. Even if it means they have to pay more - then again, I doubt they really care

I don't think it matters at the end of the day. We all know Rooney wants to leave, and we all know the club aren't going to sell him to Chelsea unless they make us an offer they can't refuse.

I always thought there was a more sinister reason for joint appearances on this program, now we know it was all part of a long term plan to get Roo

It's a World Cup season. He's already injured. The next 10 months are going to see him injured or playing within himself to avoid injury. Especially at a club he's in a mood with.

Take the £20m now and let the Kagawa era begin.

From now until eternity will ' said players wife agrees personal terms with John Terry' be quoted every time we are signing someone!:)

:wenger: The Caf is crazy sometimes.
