We get linked to everyone, sign no one. We'd be "very close" to Lewa before losing out to Munich.

We can't afford to lose Rooney because there really isn't anyone out there to replace him.

Start drowning your sorrows. He's been gone since Sir Alex spoke.

Even if he stays, we'll have to replace him as he'll give zero fecks for this club.

Man Utd will finish fifth.
Where are the goals going to come from?

I love it when pundits say things like this. Rooney was outscored by RVP and Chico last year and we're going to struggle for goals? No, its not strikers who can finish we're lacking but new centre midfielders.

"Chelsea are incandescent with rage at United."
 feck you, Chelsea.
We're still in a strong position as his contract runs out in 2 years only. There is no club willing to wait 2 years for a player so a club either offers silly money or Rooney shuts up and gets going.
I dont want him to leave, especially not to a PL rival. But if he wants out, there is not much we can do. So let's get Mata in, Rooney out, and hope he does a Torres

Good point, they're not going to wait for a player who'll be pushing 30. Falcao and Cavani are out of the equation, they're desperate for Rooney. Hopefully we can capitalise on that.

Just heard Graham Hunter on the radio saying that:

a) Chelsea did ask if United would be interested in Mata or Luiz as part of the deal.
b) United are determined not to allow Rooney go to an English club unless they get a ridiculous bid. Says they're determined not to let Stretford force the club's hand, especially at the start of the Moyes era. Hunter basically says the club are very aware that they're in a state of flux at the moment and want to manage perceptions carefully so as not to suggest they're in a weak position.

He says that's from two United sources, one at executive level.

Of course we would reject a first bid even if it included Mata. Let them up the bid to £20m and mata.

We should release a statement saying we have accepted a deal of £20 million plus Mata, just for the feck of it. The whole of Chelsea would explode.

To top it off we should release a statement saying Roman has bought the club and will be selling Chelsea.

Mourinho has dropped a bollock here I feel. He's just given us an added incentive to hold out for something big, or Rooney will have to hand in a transfer request. It's not as simple as Pep/Thiagos case given there is no release clause. I'd love if we were to get Mata + any sum of money tbh. If no Mata, then no less than 35million.

How would a guy who lives in Spain know more than the journos that are following the team around everywhere on the tour? They've not reported much.

Seriously, if we have a chance to get Mata we should go for it.

Just imagine Rooney has the season of his life and fires Chelsea to the title - better not sell him there, even though swapping him for Mata sounds tempting

Who knows how he has his sources? United did contact him about Thiago in the past though, that has been confirmed by other journalists. That would suggest some kind of relationship between him and people at the club, no?

Pretty much this. We don't want to sell him there as it makes them a lot stronger. But....if we take Mata off them in the process they'd be arguably weaker after the deal and that's what we want. We don't want our rivals getting stronger. Of course they might sign a replacement for Mata but I doubt they'd be as good as him.

Just imagine Obi Mikel has the season of his life and fires Chelsea to the title. Wont happen, Rooney or no Rooney, if we play well ourselves

nah, that was Eto +E30m for Ibra.

I think Mata and £20 million is even more ridiculous, personally. Rooney's career is petering out; he has shown he hasn't got the desire to fight for his place, he has no desire to be a club legend anywhere he's been (Everton and now us) and seems to be driven solely by money. I simply cannot see Rooney replicate his form from say 2010 again, when he was probably the best striker in the world for a few months.

Then you have Mata who is just a sumptuous footballer whose best years are undoubtedly ahead of him. The impact he'd have on our football would be immeasurable in my opinion, especially when you factor in he would be playing alongside a like-minded player in Kagawa. Mata's creativity in that withdrawn role is unmatched in the Premier League and to acquire him and £20 million would be incredible. Just a few million on top of that and we could also potentially sign Fabregas. It's an obscene amount of money to be offered for Rooney, a player whom we've shown we can cope without.

Rooney has lost that fire - but at the same time, he still delivers goals and he's much less of a liability in terms of suspension or bad press. However obviously Mata would be of interest.
