I was being sarcastic. As you say no sensible person gave a shit about the Twitter bio. The story erupted because of the greater concern that Rooney wanted to leave.
My point was Rooney was happy to deny a press story, but he chose to deny something that was a side issue.
For you, and others, that seem to think the story is a fabrication, what do you think is actually going on with Rooney? Given the lack of a denial or any public attempt at quelling speculation Rooney presumably does want to leave even though the stories saying so are fake?
Ah sorry that sarcasm flew right over my head. It's been an irritable transfer season for me so far...
Like I say, I don't read much into lack of denials. These days Rooney could utterly deny that there's any chance of him moving one day and within a week, the media would find something else and use it to raise the question again. We'd see headlines like 'Rooney refuses to sign contract despite denying he wants to leave' just because there was no news about the contract being signed.
I don't think he's entirely happy here, that much is true. I also don't think he'd ever give a full denial of anything because agents, particularly agents like Stretford, know that denying anything outright weakens your position in terms of negotiation. Players almost never do it nowadays - the fact that Fabregas has is what makes me so sure he's going nowhere.
But I don't think Rooney ever 'wanted to leave' as definitively as people claim. I think, basically, he's a dim lad who's been at this club since he was 18 (and therefore doesn't really know what it's like elsewhere) and who doesn't really know how to deal with it when things aren't going well. He was dropped from the Madrid game for tactical reasons - whilst it hasn't been his best season, he's still more than good enough to be an automatic starter for us, even if he has to be squeezed into an awkward position. But Fergie opted for Welbeck's defensive work-rate and ability to keep the ball under pressure, which was a good call. That said, I don't think Rooney is the level-headed sort who would really
get that - he'd have been gutted to be left out, and perhaps (with lots of help from the media vultures stirring shit up) started to feel a bit isolated and unwanted.
Whether he ever really handed in an actual transfer request, I don't know. I'm tempted to believe that all he originally did was ask why he was being left out and benched so much, and whether Fergie wanted rid of him. From there, possibly, it escalated, but again I don't think he's had a clear idea in his mind what he wants to do - he's just unhappy, and throwing a childish strop. However, I'm pretty confident that the current 'angry and confused' stuff is utter bullshit. Moyes' comments did
not imply that Rooney's going to be benched for RVP, much as the Fail etc want to see it that way. And Rooney's 'gutted to be leaving the tour injured, been training well' tweet sounded very much to me like someone who'd decided to put his head down, work hard and see what happened, which is the same thing that Moyes had been saying about him.
So I think there was a time when there was a chance of him leaving, but he never definitely wanted out and he certainly doesn't now. And I'm certain the club don't want to let him go either. We'll see, anyway.
