Ok, I'm on my lunch break atm and just heard the Mata and 10 million story. Can't find out exactly whats going on. Is there any legs in this?? :wenger:

United leaked the Mata bit, but Chelsea did actually make a cash only bid, undisclosed fee.

Oh I get it.

Chelsea launch a trivial bid for Rooney, in the hope Rooney demands to leave. Moyes is pissed off by this, so leaks that Chelsea offered Mata or Luiz to unsettle them in return.

Brilliant.

If it's just a cash deal, how much are people willing to sell him to Chelsea for? 40m? 50m?

Nothing below £35m for me.

Not interested.

We don't need to sell Rooney. So a swapping him for a suitable player that benefits squad strength is a good strategy in my book.

As we are seeing in our search for a midfielder, available quality players are very hard to find.

We have enough cash in our P&L to fund transfers this year. Gaining more cash would just drive any incoming transfer up and we'd be forced into insane '£35m for Carroll' type deals.

Fair enough, but i think we can all agree that he's a very consistent and valuable player for Chelsea because of what he provides, whether you count winning penalties or dangerous free kicks as 'assists' or not.
He's definitely a good player but I think too much stock is being placed on stats. I don't think he's worth more than Rooney. I had a Chelsea fan tell me he's worth rice as much earlier which is why the whole assists thing even mattered to me.

From BBC:
Chelsea release a statement regarding Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
The statement says: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.
"Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is apparently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United."

This might be the summer we've all dreamed about, ever since it was prophesied - we may actually see our greatest hope come true.

We may actually buy Flintoff from boxing.

Chelsea's transfer team legit read the Caf' too obviously. Mata isn't as highly rated anywhere else on the internet, and a thread started quite some weeks ago in which the majority said they'd be happy to swap Rooney for Mata. The £10 million is an added bones, throw that in with the Fabregas bid and we're sorted.

 Mourinho not happy!

Someone linked to our books the other day. We have £110m in cash. How much of that we can spend - who knows. I'm guessing maybe £60-70m. Getting £35-40m for Rooney would be handy.

So Chelsea have confirmed they've had a bid rejected.

Embarrassed for them.

I could be wrong here, but nowhere in their statement is it said that their bid was rejected. They just confirmed they made one. Whether we've rejected, accepted or decided to negotiate is unknown as far as I know. Or did I miss some news?

This is great fun, we've trolled them beautifully.

Also made to look Rooney a shithouse regarding his angry and confused status.

We've only been drip fed things via the press; a real life exercise in Chinese whispers.

Football fans are shallow, another goal such as the iconic City one and everyone will be back to singing about him being the white Pele. He won't risk not playing to his full potential next season, the club holds the cards in this respect. There's no need for us to sell this season at all and as Woodward has pointed out we've no problem running his contract down in such a pivotal year for the player, he'd just be cutting his nose off to spite his face if he didn't play out of skin with something to prove - and if he does prove it then next year maybe we'll offer an extension or at least be able to sell to a wider audience - perhaps abroad.

Wayne Rooney is going to the world cup as a starter regardless of how he plays. I don't think it's wise to keep a player who doesn't want to be there AND the fans don't want.

Thinking about it, IF the Chavs did offer Mata in the deal and then the offer became public, they'd publicly deny it to avoid unsettling their player ....

I think there is something in this

When they come back with a second offer we should tell the press they've offered us Hazard.

It is actually pretty embarrassing if it was the rumoured £20-25m. Embarrassing, or insulting to us. One of the two.

I'd rather think it's more embarrassing for Rooney.Hes throwing his toys out because he doesnt want to be 2nd fiddle to VP, and yet Chelsea value him at less the VP cost just last year with more time on his contract AND a couple of years younger.
For something that one would presume has been discussed between Rooney and Chelsea all summer, they dont want him that much.

There are 51 goals and assists here. I am not sure if 2 or 3 assists here should be counted. So somewhere in the region of 48-51 goals or assists.
That would tie in with his Wiki then. His Wiki links to a profile that states he got 3 assists and 1 goal in 'other' games (for Spain i think) but lists it on Wiki as club goals/assists.

Either way that's a fecking great return for one season.

It's highly doubtful Mata's been included in the offer, don't think Chelsea released that just to keep them happy. If the deal were to go down and Mata included, they'd be a laughing stock after that statement. It's surely just a cash offer, and if it's only 20M, they can do one.

No-one here has a clue what's going on so anyone trying to pretend that United have pulled off some great mind-game coup needs to get a grip.

Exactly and even if we have its not like winning the mind game war will do anything to strengthen the team or sort out our midfield. It's a waste of time.

If the speculation that the bit about Mata was leaked to get back at Chelsea, then  and well deserved. And I'm pretty sure this is something Fergie would have done too, so I don't think it's a Moyes thing.

I'm not discounting them. I'm pointing out one difference be aide it was the easiest one to. Mata had one more assist than Rooney in the Premier League. I think it's also fair to call into question the quality of competition these 'assists' came in. For feckw sake we're talking about tournaments Fernando Torres was scoring goals in. If we're comparing Rooney against Mata then it's fair to do so in context of the completions the two played in.

Rodney played on both cups and in Champions League. The only difference is that Mata played some games in Europa (instead of two games in UCL that Rodney played extra) and he played in World Cup. Still the difference is massive. Mata has around 20 more goal/assists.

I think they're just trying to take advantage (with or without behind the scenes encouragement from Wayne's camp) of the fact that Wayne clearly wants out. They've seen the contract situation and are hoping that we just want rid now i think.
