I disagree really. He's one of the most popular players in the dressing room, and once the window closes and the season starts he'll have no choice but to just do what he's done since he arrived and just play his game. I don't think it's a major issue if he still does prefer to leave, we've kept players who've wanted to leave many times see Ruud, Evra etc.

Fair enough, I accept that the club have a stance and they expect him to knuckle down. We have been here before though and if something is rooted in the psyche, it is very hard to eradicate. How do you know how popular he really is? You think the United players would slip into some stage of mourning if he left....be affected by a vile meloncholy? They are professionals who want to be a part of United....not just start games, but be happy they are at the club, the environment, and work hard to be the best they can....they will just get on with the job.

Rooney isn't happy in that environment for whatever reason, and the longer his malaise continues the worse his application will be. He started last season pretty well but his form completely tailed off and for a £200,000 per week player you want more than that. It's more than likely a matter of pride with Rooney. Everyone expected him to stay at Old Trafford for his career, become one of the greatest, but the script changed and that will never be the case now.

I didn't mean to make him sound as bad as Ricky. All the same, his conduct is hardly that befitting of a modern day athlete.

His benching in the Madrid game was the end of the line from my point of view. He's not got the same verve to get up and down the pitch as much as he used to. I agree with your last line.

Not a dig at you Dante, more at some of the reports describing his private life. He definitely isn't what he used to be, and that's why he is out of favor. Sometimes players just need a move to rediscover their zest for the game, and i think that is where Rooney has been for a couple of seasons now. His form has been sporadic to say the least, which is why i believe SAF opted to sign alternatives to Rooney in RVP and Kagawa.

All this talk of 4-2-3-1 without the usual 2 wingers, is there any sign that it's the formation United will be employing now?

Its okay lads, I plan on clearing this up. Just tweeted chelsea about it...

Makes more sense for them to have made a cash only bid, but even if they did include a player they wouldn't admit it publicly

Who leaked the Mata/Luiz bit then? The way it came out someone must have. United to show that thats what it would take to get him?

That's their problem Theon. If they want him, let them worry about getting the best out of him. I would be delighted with a straight swap for Mata. I think he is just what we need. He can play in a variety of positions, and would give us much of what we look for from Rooney when he drops deeper.

I agree absolutely mate - my point was just that we shouldn't going overboard worrying about Chelsea getting Rooney, as they are losing their best player.

To be fair it's a natural progression and a nice middle ground for me. If Rooney stayed we could have him in the hole, Kagawa tucked in from the left and Valencia/Nani providing width. If he went and we did get say Mata he can just swap in. One of the criticisms of say our normal way is it makes us heavily reliant on the wingers, who nani aside don't really come in. On the other hand, City/Arsenal/Chelsea, lack players who can go down the line other than full backs and so they can be too narrow. We could set up with a good mix, with kagawa &mata/rooney tucked in, nani/valencia giving width and opening space for them and RVP up top.

Ohhhhh.....and I was looking forward to this:

Carrick-Cesc
Bale-Kagawa-Mata
Robin van Persie

Just on my lunch break and all this is going on. Seriously wtf?

I will not bring myself to believe any of it. It seems too Football Manager-ish.

What I will say is that if by some miracle there is some truth in it, we rejected it because either:

- Rooney is already a part of a deal that none of us are yet aware of (I thought it might have been Thiago but obviously not. Fabregas? Cristi...ok maybe not)
- We think that we can get more out of Chelsea (why accept a first offer even if it is really good?).

I'm so sceptical right now. None of us have any idea what is and isn't real and it seems like football journalism has takena really massive nosedive with so much trash being spouted. When The Times printed that Dream Football League article that they stole from some French parody website that was an indicator that their 'sources' are bullshit and they will print anything that creates a headline, sells papers, or gets them clicks.

I wouldn't start putting Mata into your line ups just yet.

feck it I'm not listening to anyone until I see a player holding the shirt for the club they've just signed for.

This is turning into a soap opera.

Chelsea strongly deny offering any player to United. They made a cash bid which was rejected. They're furious with Utd. Statement imminent.

To clarify #cfc angry that two of their players have been thrown into the mix, which they blame on Utd. Insist Mata &. Luiz will both stay.

Expect Mourinho to be very outspoken later and likely to criticise United. This will run and run. #rooney
