Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

Yeah, fair point, you're consistent at least. The people who were signing White Pele a week ago and then chanted YSB in Albert Square are the real idiots. Literally all he's done in that time is ask for assurances about his future and then suggest maybe he should leave. All in private too. I'm fecked if I understand what Fergie was doing confirming it to the media.

And the half arsed performances anytime he decides he doesn't want to play for us anymore. That doesn't help.

Can someone rationally explain to me what it is that Rooney has done lately to "burn his bridges", create a 'rift with the fans', or any of the other dozens of hysterical proclamations which have littered this thread?

He has going public with his desire to leave. We like to be treated like mushroom-keep us in the dark and fill us full of shit.

Do people honestly think this thing doesn't go on all the time?

I say I'm going to pack my job in and go work somewhere else every day.

Maybe I'm shit at my job, but nobody seems that bothered by my threats to leave.

That's not such a bad thing. I doubt he'd want to die.

Games over lucrative contracts are despicable, these days and sadly, it's becoming a new standard in some of the elite football circles.

Highest possible wage will propably make him stay... If it's all because, he doesn't like Moyes or is afraid of his character and discipline, I'm really amazed how he survived with Sir Alex, being his manager.

Could be also that thing of player seeking guarantee that team will still sign world class players, under new boss. Anyway, the whole case of Wayne Rooney still stinks and it doesn't help this football club. That's all.

You missed the transfer requests?

Has Evra burned his bridges with the fans? He made a mistake in wanting to leave United in the same summer but the fans forgave him quickly. Even after Rooney took us to a league title win and Champions League final with some exceptional form he was seemingly never forgiven. That mistake took the love of the fans away and this season the van Persie signing has seemingly taken the love of the coaches away. It's hard to see comments like this as anything other than a message to Rooney:

[Meulensteen] continued: ‘In the last few seasons, we had squeezed everything out of our star players and last season we were just not good enough.

‘As a club we had to make sure that we would not underperform again. With Robin we have a world-class player in our ranks again. He’s a really world-class act. As one of the biggest clubs in the world we really needed a player like him.'

‘With his personality, it was easy to get a warm welcome from the rest of the squad from the first moment.

‘Robin is not the kind of player who says, “Here I am”. Robin is an absolute professional. He’s a fantastic trainer and he delivers on the pitch.

‘That creates a security for players. They feel nothing bad can happen to them because we have got Robin van Persie. We really missed that kind of influence last season.’

And I'm sure moments like this further reinforce that feeling of no longer being the golden boy.

Most of the bad feeling towards Rooney now actually comes as a result of his unacceptable bahaviour back in 2010 to get a better contract, at that time he admitted he made a mistake and most fans decided to give him a chance at redemption.

But since then there has been a whole catalogue of issues with Rooney both on and off the pitch (poor fitness, defying club curfews, patchy form, off field issues etc) which has culminated in the revelations that he is unhappy and has thought about a move (which just by coincidence comes at the time he needs to renegotiate his contract!) - that is basically the straw that broke the camels back and now we get 2.5 years worth of anger toward Rooney all pouring out.

Is it really despicable though? It's someone rich trying to wangle a higher wage out of an incredibly wealthy company who make enormous sums on the performance and marketability of their assets. Said assets want to be paid what they feel they're worth based on what they bring to the company.

It's business, which is what football is these days. It's hardly despicable.

I hope this is sorted one way or another soon.

A week in, and it's already one of the more boring transfer sagas with our club.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't particularly like the present state of affairs myself, but that's neither here nor there, really. Playing hardball in a business setting isn't despicable. It is what it is: Business. The reason so many are on Rooney's case at the moment can't be that he has acted like a man who tries to squeeze his employer for every penny he can. If it is, the same people must necessarily find the majority of professional footballers more or less despicable.

Hope so too. But it could easily drag on and on. It depends on Moyes: If he doesn't like the idea of having Rooney around this thing could be over soon. But I have a feeling he, Moyes, isn't sure himself.

Yes, I agree but we're talking about Wayne Rooney here. Big name player, who's clearly losing his enthusiasm for the game, these days. He's not so tough in current football ranks, too. There are better players than him, also in a terms of commitment.

How about him showing some commitment first, before taking that big, fat cheque ? What's going on on the pitch is not business. It's football and everyone can see what's going on.

Can't play a historical match because he's not in the mood to play. Give me a feckin break...

I know I'm ranting but this is how exactly I feel. There is time for business, I know but there's also time for being an integral part of the team in face of biggest events in football.

I love the reaction of the substitute's bench when they see van Persie and Fergie embrace.

Heart-warming stuff.

Same. Welbeck looks like he's watching a bunch of rabbits playing footsie in the fields. Cute. Wonderful moment to tell your kids about in Fergie's last season.

You missed the transfer requests?

I said lately.

He has going public with his desire to leave.

He actually hasn't. Someone in the club leaked it, and then, for reasons beyond me, Fergie confirmed it.

Honestly, as far as I can tell it really is just people who were hurt in 2010 feeling like they can finally, properly hate him, because he's uncertain about his future.

It's a bit convenient for pro-Rooney posters to put it all down to old rancour, and compare Wayne's misbehaviour to that of past greats like Ronaldo, Cantona and even Best. Instead, some of us are pissed off at Rooney primarily because he's strolled through too many games. Who knows, maybe our perception of his efforts is wrong but that's how it appears. I don't hate him, and I don't necessarily want him gone - I want him to regain his enthusiasm for being a United player, and I want him to be happy to represent the club; sadly, I don't hold out much hope for either.

I think your perception is wrong. I think he's out of form and short of confidence. He's never not trying.

21 February 2010

The United manager talks to Paul Hayward about Rooney, the Glazers and the loss of Ronaldo

Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney play a game at the Manchester United training ground. Ferguson says: "He's the best at coming up to me and asking: 'What's the team?' I say: 'You're not playing.' He says: 'Come on, give me your team.' I say: 'No, I won't, I'm still thinking about it.'

"Then he says: 'I'll give you my team.' And he gives me his team. He's brilliant at it. He's never far wrong. He thinks about it, you see. He knows the game."

This is Ferguson in his element, larking about with a world-class footballer whose development he has overseen from the star's late teenage years. Rooney is the great individual delight in a season of immense challenges for the manager

This is what my mate said who sat next to Rooney at a dinner. He's got pretty much nothing to say on any other topic, but when it comes to football he's genuinely insightful.

Professional footballer wants more money shock...

Rooney's had an average season by his standards and it's not clear if he can get back to those standards. He seems not to want to live the life of a professional athlete but wants the rewards. It doesn't work like that.

Get rid of your agent and start behaving like a professional in your lifestyle and training habits Wayne. Then we might see an improvement on the pitch. That's the only way you get to play regularly - at United or anywhere else.

Rooney has yet to do anything on a par with repeatedly and publicly trying to force his way out of the club, getting banned for 8 months for assaulting a fan and then repeatedly trying to feck off or, well, the entire book's worth of shit Best did. The point is that those players are still absolutely adored, and Rooney is widely despised. What's that all about?

Because people believe (rightly or wrongly) that the other players mentioned had United in their hearts, regardless of bad behaviour. It also helps that they possessed more genius than Rooney could dream of.

Same here. The problem is I've heard a few people already say he could use the summer break to sort out his head. I can't see the club giving him a month to decide though.

Yes, I am bumming Rooney. Because I am a gay man, a gay man for Wayne Rooney. Well done, you have outed me as a fan of scouse sodomy, I congratulate you.

The longer he takes to make his mind up, the less likely he'll be leaving.

I can't imagine transfer negotiations for him will be swift.

If he has any reason to feel uncertain about his future or is finding it difficult to understand why he hasn't played so regularly this season, then he should have look in the mirror for answers. Staring back at him would be a player of inconsistent fitness [an awfully kind description on some occasion that] and form on a wage which can't but be a burden to the club, an individual who does not appear based on recent evidence to be up for the fight of truly competing for a position in the front rank of the team any longer.

Since the smokescreen of 2010 concerning Fergie's transfer policy the squad has moved on, he got his pay rise which he was happy with it's the changes which he can't seemingly handle. This isn't about hate yet that doesn't mean fans are going to be gushing with sympathy for Rooney under the circumstances .

Lets just cut to the bone shall we, everyone has finally realised im right and brilliant and wants to be just like me
