Wayne Rooney will forever split opinions at Manchester United.
And I think a little bit of both sides argument apply to the real Wayne Rooney.
Does he deserve the level of, if any, abuse he receives from his own clubs fans? No.
Did he, in the past, abuse his position at the club to benefit himself all whilst questioning the direction of the club? Yes.
Is he a quality player we, like any other club, would miss should he leave? Yes.
Has he asked to leave for a second time in three years? Yes.
Well said.
It’s basically emotional, that’s the whole point here. People who simply don’t like Rooney very much will use things against him that pass unnoticed when other players are involved. That’s the nature of fandom, I guess. I don’t have a problem with it myself. What I do find a bit irksome, though, are the attempts at portraying Rooney as an exceptional case of disloyalty, greed, stupidity and whatnot. He clearly isn’t. He hasn’t done anything particularly shocking in my opinion.
As others have said, if he ends up at City, kisses the badge and pisses in public on a picture of Fergie - then, yes, by all means form a lynch mob. But until that happens he’s nothing but a professional footballer to me - in other words not a person worthy of any particular respect or devotion. But certainly not deserving of any particular hatred or disgust either. I have enjoyed his football over the years, that’s it. If he buggers off, so be it, but he has played an important part in United’s recent history.
You forgot the most important one:
Is he vital for our future success, or even to be considered a major loss? NO.
Wake up and smell the coffee
The guy never cares about United, Ronaldo wants out and he speaks behind the curtain with SAF, and being a gentlement SAF granted his wish without having to publicly ask for a transfer request
Check your stats, who in the history of football handed in transfer request, I can only recall Alonso, Rooney of the recent years. The rest are just transferred or sold without too much fuss

Ferguson made the wrong decision. Rooney's record in the Champions League knockout phase is immaculate. Of currently active players, only Messi and Ronaldo can boast a better goal scoring record. Unfortunately, Ferguson persisted with his golden boy van Persie, despite the player's horrendous misses and poor performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. And Ferguson has also stifled Welbeck's enormous attacking potential by forcing him to play a largely defensive role. Two goals on the season is an awful return for a player as talented as Welbeck, but I do not blame the player, I blame Ferguson for misusing him. Rooney also had to play an unfamiliar defensive role in the first leg, to accommodate van Persie and Ferguson's negative tactics. And of course Chicharito is not even part of this discussion, but he has featured far less than he deserved because of Ferguson's favouritism.
Ferguson this season did not run a meritocracy. It was a selfish season from Ferguson. He made an impulsive shortsighted signing in van Persie. This signing has helped Manchester United achieve a twentieth League title for sure, but it has also harmed some of the club's most important players for now and the future. Signing a 29 year-old for an extraordinate fee is unsustainable and strikes me as Ferguson seeking a quick fix to ensure he is able to retire on a high note. That, to me, is pure selfishness.
By signing van Persie, he has unsettled Rooney, stifled Welbeck's development, and treated Chicharito unfairly. Prior to this season, all three were crucial members of the squad for the present and future. This season, Rooney's been played everywhere but his natural role. Harsh on a player who in the previous season scored 34 goals. Welbeck, too, has played everywhere but as a striker. The player has enjoyed a decent season largely due to his enthusiasm and work rate, but missing from his game have been the goals and productivity that he showed capable of in his previous season. This is worrying at such a crucial age in his development. And I hope Chicharito follows Rooney and hands in a transfer request. He has been treated horribly this season. Even when van Persie was playing horribly and failing to come anywhere near scoring, Ferguson persisted with his vanity signing, van Persie.

it's like a fecking cult on here at times. That is some RAWK shit.
Yeah I think he's our best player. Many will say RVP, fair enough, I don't think there's much in it but it doesn't really affect the point. If we don't replace him with another absolutely world-class talent, whether in his position or elsewhere, we will be badly weakened.
As it is, we don't have any other really creative players except Giggs, Kagawa and Nani, and Nani may be off too.

There's a different in wanting to move to another club and publicly handing in a transfer request, there's even financial forgone for applying a transfer request.
What would be RAWKISH would be to lap it up as some kind of "rooney being hounded out of the club by SAF"

Rooney is no longer a player we need. He's a great player to have, but we'll manage just fine without him. Even better if we sign a good player.

He's our main and supposedly star player, it's fecking expected for him to lead the Goal scoring, he's not better than any other great players we've had before him, RvN, Yorke, Cole, Ole have all contributed a huge amount of goals, doesn't mean they love United less than Rooney
This "through and Through" is overrated, he's at Manchester United, and he's not exactly a world beater like Messi, he's not staying here because he's loyal, but where else could he possibly goes? Barca/Madrid won't want him, they never tap him up, City probably wouldn't want him either, Chelsea goes for Torres
He's staying all this while due to circumstances, and I doubt he have United at his heart
He's close to 28, its his last paycheck, I have no grudge if he wants to move on for money, or new challenge, but to publicly handed in a transfer request TWICE
Just sold him, he didn't deserve all the praise he got.
For all RvN, Beckham, Ronaldo, and other crucified for here, they never put in a public "TRANSFER REQUEST"
His second transfer request has justify all the dislike for him
Now he can feck off for all I care, he doesnt respect the fact that it is SAF's retiring, and causing all kinds of commotions with his stupid transfer request. Serves him right I say
If we were to sell Rooney last summer and bring in RVP as his replacement then that would be replacing him. With likes of Kagawa adding to the squad.Yeah I think he's our best player. Many will say RVP, fair enough, I don't think there's much in it but it doesn't really affect the point. The point is plech, he's a star player, and if he's off and we replaced him with similar player of similar caliber, we won't be worse off, and probably would be better off.
Take this season, we replaced Rooney with RvP and we were better off arguably.
It's not fair to simply take Rooney out into the equation without assuming another world class player coming in. If we didn't replace him adequately, I think the notion that we'll be weakened doesnt only apply to Rooney, but to every first team player we have
Well, I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I can think of at several United players who are better in terms of their position and importance to the team.
I also don't think Rooney falls under the "creative" category. Rooney is unique in one sense though. We don't have any other strikers who are "all over the pitch" and still scores goals. Still, I've always felt that this particular style of player stifles the quality of the short passing and interplay around the box. That is why Kagawa(in my opinion) is a better choice, and therefore the future. People claim that this solution is going to put too much pressure on our central midfield, but I think it's the opposite actually. Kagawa is much better at keeping the ball and passing than Rooney ever will be. This gives our midfield a whole new safety that they've never been able to enjoy before. Yes, Kagawa is not going to win the ball or track back as effectively as Rooney. Yes, he'll probably not score as many goals. But you can bet your as he'll be the mastermind behind our attacks and get many more assists.
Rooney is no longer a player we need. He's a great player to have, but we'll manage just fine without him. Even better if we sign a good player.
When has he handed in a public transfer request twice...and ronaldo didn't say anything about it in public??? Want me to dig out the quotes?

Are you the original Elvis or the imposter?
He has given fantastic service for nearly a decade. Still has 5 years left at the very top. He is just frustrated with his form, not being played in his natural position, dropped, substituted, etc... Something he has never encountered previously in his career. He has reacted by asking for a transfer most likely in frustration. We all throw tantrums with our employers every once in a while. He's hardly slagged off the club, or Sir Alex. Some people are acting as if it was their granny he committed adultery with...
Well I remember as far back as Spoonatov so the original.
Was this place as hysterical when Spoonatov was entering the 36 chambers?
Not that I can remember. Though the Berbatov thread on transfer deadline day in 2008 was great fun.
