Wayne Rooney will forever split opinions at Manchester United.

And I think a little bit of both sides argument apply to the real Wayne Rooney.

Does he deserve the level of, if any, abuse he receives from his own clubs fans? No.

Did he, in the past, abuse his position at the club to benefit himself all whilst questioning the direction of the club? Yes.

Is he a quality player we, like any other club, would miss should he leave? Yes.

Has he asked to leave for a second time in three years? Yes.

You forgot the most important one:

Is he vital for our future success, or even to be considered a major loss? NO.

Well said.

It’s basically emotional, that’s the whole point here. People who simply don’t like Rooney very much will use things against him that pass unnoticed when other players are involved. That’s the nature of fandom, I guess. I don’t have a problem with it myself. What I do find a bit irksome, though, are the attempts at portraying Rooney as an exceptional case of disloyalty, greed, stupidity and whatnot. He clearly isn’t. He hasn’t done anything particularly shocking in my opinion.

As others have said, if he ends up at City, kisses the badge and pisses in public on a picture of Fergie - then, yes, by all means form a lynch mob. But until that happens he’s nothing but a professional footballer to me - in other words not a person worthy of any particular respect or devotion. But certainly not deserving of any particular hatred or disgust either. I have enjoyed his football over the years, that’s it. If he buggers off, so be it, but he has played an important part in United’s recent history.

Wake up and smell the coffee

The guy never cares about United, Ronaldo wants out and he speaks behind the curtain with SAF, and being a gentlement SAF granted his wish without having to publicly ask for a transfer request

Check your stats, who in the history of football handed in transfer request, I can only recall Alonso, Rooney of the recent years. The rest are just transferred or sold without too much fuss

He's our main and supposedly star player, it's fecking expected for him to lead the Goal scoring, he's not better than any other great players we've had before him, RvN, Yorke, Cole, Ole have all contributed a huge amount of goals, doesn't mean they love United less than Rooney

This "through and Through" is overrated, he's at Manchester United, and he's not exactly a world beater like Messi, he's not staying here because he's loyal, but where else could he possibly goes? Barca/Madrid won't want him, they never tap him up, City probably wouldn't want him either, Chelsea goes for Torres

He's staying all this while due to circumstances, and I doubt he have United at his heart

He's close to 28, its his last paycheck, I have no grudge if he wants to move on for money, or new challenge, but to publicly handed in a transfer request TWICE

Just sold him, he didn't deserve all the praise he got.

For all RvN, Beckham, Ronaldo, and other crucified for here, they never put in a public "TRANSFER REQUEST"

His second transfer request has justify all the dislike for him

Now he can feck off for all I care, he doesnt respect the fact that it is SAF's retiring, and causing all kinds of commotions with his stupid transfer request. Serves him right I say

 it's like a fecking cult on here at times. That is some RAWK shit.

Ferguson made the wrong decision. Rooney's record in the Champions League knockout phase is immaculate. Of currently active players, only Messi and Ronaldo can boast a better goal scoring record. Unfortunately, Ferguson persisted with his golden boy van Persie, despite the player's horrendous misses and poor performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. And Ferguson has also stifled Welbeck's enormous attacking potential by forcing him to play a largely defensive role. Two goals on the season is an awful return for a player as talented as Welbeck, but I do not blame the player, I blame Ferguson for misusing him. Rooney also had to play an unfamiliar defensive role in the first leg, to accommodate van Persie and Ferguson's negative tactics. And of course Chicharito is not even part of this discussion, but he has featured far less than he deserved because of Ferguson's favouritism.

Ferguson this season did not run a meritocracy. It was a selfish season from Ferguson. He made an impulsive shortsighted signing in van Persie. This signing has helped Manchester United achieve a twentieth League title for sure, but it has also harmed some of the club's most important players for now and the future. Signing a 29 year-old for an extraordinate fee is unsustainable and strikes me as Ferguson seeking a quick fix to ensure he is able to retire on a high note. That, to me, is pure selfishness.

By signing van Persie, he has unsettled Rooney, stifled Welbeck's development, and treated Chicharito unfairly. Prior to this season, all three were crucial members of the squad for the present and future. This season, Rooney's been played everywhere but his natural role. Harsh on a player who in the previous season scored 34 goals. Welbeck, too, has played everywhere but as a striker. The player has enjoyed a decent season largely due to his enthusiasm and work rate, but missing from his game have been the goals and productivity that he showed capable of in his previous season. This is worrying at such a crucial age in his development. And I hope Chicharito follows Rooney and hands in a transfer request. He has been treated horribly this season. Even when van Persie was playing horribly and failing to come anywhere near scoring, Ferguson persisted with his vanity signing, van Persie.

Have a read that yourself when you're sober

I would have picked RvP over Rooney any day and twice on Sunday. Rooney's blowing hot and cold, he goes missing most of the times, and record means shit in a one off game.

Negative tactics? We're being praised tactically, and its not SAF's fault the Ref's having a bonker of a match.

And Rooney, He runs around like a headless chicken because that's the only thing he can brag about, he mistimed short pass, and just because he hits a beautiful long pass in a meaningless match doesn't merit him being in the team. There is a good reason why SAF bought RvP, because at his worst that guy is still lethal, while Rooney at his worst is an atrocity, and his off days are getting more and more in between

If any RvP deserves to be there in place of Rooney. And if I recall Welbeck was the fecking MOTM that day, and you're saying he doesnt merit the starting place ahead of the off form Rooney?

Biggest pile of shit I have ever read on here FFS.

I'm not fussed at all, we'll be better off without him - maybe we'll get a replacement who is professional and doesn't smoke and drink on his holidays..

There's a different in wanting to move to another club and publicly handing in a transfer request, there's even financial forgone for applying a transfer request.

What would be RAWKISH would be to lap it up as some kind of "rooney being hounded out of the club by SAF"

Plechazunga:

Do you think Rooney leaving is a major loss to the cub? Do you think we'll win significantly fewer games, score significantly fewer goals and do significantly worse in the league and the cups?

Obviously we're losing a quality player who any team would like to have in their squad. But he's far from irreplaceable. That's the main point here. I think we'll manage just fine without Rooney. Maybe even better, depending on who we sign.

The big loss of this season, is Fergie's retirement. The Boss is worth at least 20 Rooney's imo. If we were to become shit next season, I will have no Rooney fanboys come crawling back and claim that it's because Rooney isn't here. It's aaaaall Fergie!

Yeah I think he's our best player. Many will say RVP, fair enough, I don't think there's much in it but it doesn't really affect the point. If we don't replace him with another absolutely world-class talent, whether in his position or elsewhere, we will be badly weakened.

As it is, we don't have any other really creative players except Giggs, Kagawa and Nani, and Nani may be off too.

The point is plech, he's a star player, and if he's off and we replaced him with similar player of similar caliber, we won't be worse off, and probably would be better off.

Take this season, we replaced Rooney with RvP and we were better off arguably.

It's not fair to simply take Rooney out into the equation without assuming another world class player coming in. If we didn't replace him adequately, I think the notion that we'll be weakened doesnt only apply to Rooney, but to every first team player we have

Christ almighty

I called it earlier on in the week. His head is not right, motivation levels are down and I think is generally disillusioned with his life at the club.

I don't think it's about him not being the main man anymore, he has enjoyed playing with RvP very much IMO.

I just think he lacks the passion, and the 100% concentration required to play for this club right now. Which may be something Fergie has seen throughout the season and omitted/subbed him from games accordingly.

rooney is the type of player who can be average for one year but can be one of the world's top 10 player the next. if he does leaves i hope he is going abroad. and we need a big signing to replace him too.

Well, I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I can think of at several United players who are better in terms of their position and importance to the team.

I also don't think Rooney falls under the "creative" category. Rooney is unique in one sense though. We don't have any other strikers who are "all over the pitch" and still scores goals. Still, I've always felt that this particular style of player stifles the quality of the short passing and interplay around the box. That is why Kagawa(in my opinion) is a better choice, and therefore the future. People claim that this solution is going to put too much pressure on our central midfield, but I think it's the opposite actually. Kagawa is much better at keeping the ball and passing than Rooney ever will be. This gives our midfield a whole new safety that they've never been able to enjoy before. Yes, Kagawa is not going to win the ball or track back as effectively as Rooney. Yes, he'll probably not score as many goals. But you can bet your as he'll be the mastermind behind our attacks and get many more assists.

Rooney is no longer a player we need. He's a great player to have, but we'll manage just fine without him. Even better if we sign a good player.

 he did hand this one in in private ffs.

I dont think thats fair.

In the matchday thread yesterday I said the front four we started with, VP, Danny, Chica and Kagawa, were playing far more fluid football than any front four combination that included Rooney in the last two months, and I dont think that was too far off the mark.

However, thats Rooney of the last two months. Rooney at his peak improves any front four combination we have no matter which one he replaces , the actual question isnt whether we want rooney or if hes good enough, because its a shite question, rooney at his best is easily good enough.

The only question is will he ever be at his best if we keep him.

If we were to sell Rooney last summer and bring in RVP as his replacement then that would be replacing him. With likes of Kagawa adding to the squad.

he used to be our star player. though form is temporary, roon probably has lost his spark. contrary to the press, he is fit physically but he always lost possession easily now. his departure would not affect the team and i wonder whether he really is better than existing players while esp that he may not be able to play consecutively, can he keep his performance? even he admits that if he cannot play regularly, it is difficult for him to perform well

Got to say that I agree with this, mate. I'd rather see Kagawa in the line up, behind RvP, than Rooney every match.

Am really annoyed about the timing of all this. Has over shadowed our focus on SAFs last few days at the club. Yes it's an important issue for Rooney and the club but it could have waited til after the season finished.

Agreed

He has given fantastic service for nearly a decade. Still has 5 years left at the very top. He is just frustrated with his form, not being played in his natural position, dropped, substituted, etc... Something he has never encountered previously in his career. He has reacted by asking for a transfer most likely in frustration. We all throw tantrums with our employers every once in a while. He's hardly slagged off the club, or Sir Alex. Some people are acting as if it was their granny he committed adultery with...

This is not a spur of moment sultan

The comment he made about the club 3 years back is very disrespectful, it's like saying that his teammates are not up to the standard, and that he belongs to a more elite set up than the guys he's playing with.

We all have a dig at our employer at times, even disgruntled and bitching behind their back, but again, to publicly slate your teammate and especially sir Alex Ferguson who probably have won titles before Rooney's even born, questioning the club ambition (only to use it as leverage for contract negotiation). If he so loves the club why don't he sign the contract and bitch about it AFTER. Funny all the talk about ambition suddenly gone after he gets his mega contract.

He's treating the fans like a fool, thinking that we'd believe that it is genuine worry about lack of ambition. That's just plain disrespectful, and to do it again in the eve of SAF retirement.

He's 27 years old now, kids in the walk of life, but in the game of football he should know better and mature enough to keep his mouth shut about his current employer and teammates

Not that I can remember. Though the Berbatov thread on transfer deadline day in 2008 was great fun.

The Tevez thread was good and all, 'cocks out' took off and never looked back. Was my fault for popularising Plech's phrase.

But yeah er... Rooney. Kill him.
