Ultimately the answers are all within the club and the reality of it all will be worked out there. Gary Neville had some fairly sensible thoughts on it which are quite a way off some of the wild crap written in here.

Gary Neville ‘ Speaking in his role as an analyst for Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘He (Rooney) is an emotional lad and he needs to consider what he’s done.
He’s 27 and there’s nowhere to go. I’ve seen players join Real Madrid and they want to come back. He loves football, the players will look after him. He’s been vacant on the pitch recently and he’s not been himself.
‘He’s sat up there in that box watching the game, but he needs to surround himself with friends and family.
‘This is a good kid. He’s not rash, just emotional. These players have massive egos. When they don’t play against Real Madrid in the Champions League they get down, but they have to deal with adversity.
‘There is an international break coming and that will be an important time for him to enjoy his football again.’

Calling Rooney a cnut on here says more about people that are saying those things than they say about Rooney himself.

I will be devastated if he leaves, but I respect his wishes.

If his destination is Bayern, who among us can fail to understand? Bayern are a club in ascendancy, with passionate and respectful fans. After this season, United will be a club in rapid decline, with fans willing to boo and personally attack a player who has graced the football club with 9 years of tremendous service.

At United he faces the prospect of working with a manager as dull as Moyes, while at Bayern he has the chance to work with the visionary Guardiola. At Bayern, he can play alongside world class talents like Mario Götze, while at United he can settle to play alongside third rate talents like Wilfried Zaha. At Bayern, he will receive service from the likes of Franck Ribéry and Thomas Müller, while at United he has Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.

You're going to be fun to have around next season.

Obviously if he goes to City, or to a lesser extent Chelsea, then that makes things different. And would set him apart from the others frequently mentioned in this thread.

Until that happens though, It's surely best to not go too cuckoo over the whole thing.

Well said.

It’s basically emotional, that’s the whole point here. People who simply don’t like Rooney very much will use things against him that pass unnoticed when other players are involved. That’s the nature of fandom, I guess. I don’t have a problem with it myself. What I do find a bit irksome, though, are the attempts at portraying Rooney as an exceptional case of disloyalty, greed, stupidity and whatnot. He clearly isn’t. He hasn’t done anything particularly shocking in my opinion.

As others have said, if he ends up at City, kisses the badge and pisses in public on a picture of Fergie - then, yes, by all means form a lynch mob. But until that happens he’s nothing but a professional footballer to me - in other words not a person worthy of any particular respect or devotion. But certainly not deserving of any particular hatred or disgust either. I have enjoyed his football over the years, that’s it. If he buggers off, so be it, but he has played an important part in United’s recent history.

Christ, if they're that much better than us then Rooney's going to find himself warming the bench. He's not even our best player and got dropped from our biggest game of the season.

Ferguson made the wrong decision. Rooney's record in the Champions League knockout phase is immaculate. Of currently active players, only Messi and Ronaldo can boast a better goal scoring record. Unfortunately, Ferguson persisted with his golden boy van Persie, despite the player's horrendous misses and poor performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. And Ferguson has also stifled Welbeck's enormous attacking potential by forcing him to play a largely defensive role. Two goals on the season is an awful return for a player as talented as Welbeck, but I do not blame the player, I blame Ferguson for misusing him. Rooney also had to play an unfamiliar defensive role in the first leg, to accommodate van Persie and Ferguson's negative tactics. And of course Chicharito is not even part of this discussion, but he has featured far less than he deserved because of Ferguson's favouritism.

Ferguson this season did not run a meritocracy. It was a selfish season from Ferguson. He made an impulsive shortsighted signing in van Persie. This signing has helped Manchester United achieve a twentieth League title for sure, but it has also harmed some of the club's most important players for now and the future. Signing a 29 year-old for an extraordinate fee is unsustainable and strikes me as Ferguson seeking a quick fix to ensure he is able to retire on a high note. That, to me, is pure selfishness.

By signing van Persie, he has unsettled Rooney, stifled Welbeck's development, and treated Chicharito unfairly. Prior to this season, all three were crucial members of the squad for the present and future. This season, Rooney's been played everywhere but his natural role. Harsh on a player who in the previous season scored 34 goals. Welbeck, too, has played everywhere but as a striker. The player has enjoyed a decent season largely due to his enthusiasm and work rate, but missing from his game have been the goals and productivity that he showed capable of in his previous season. This is worrying at such a crucial age in his development. And I hope Chicharito follows Rooney and hands in a transfer request. He has been treated horribly this season. Even when van Persie was playing horribly and failing to come anywhere near scoring, Ferguson persisted with his vanity signing, van Persie.

Wayne Rooney will forever split opinions at Manchester United.

And I think a little bit of both sides argument apply to the real Wayne Rooney.

Does he deserve the level of, if any, abuse he receives from his own clubs fans? No.

Did he, in the past, abuse his position at the club to benefit himself all whilst questioning the direction of the club? Yes.

Is he a quality player we, like any other club, would miss should he leave? Yes.

Has he asked to leave for a second time in three years? Yes.

I feel like handing in a transfer request now.

He's all self, that Alex Ferguson, apparently. I bet he'd have loved Whelan's Big Red Dome*, with a massive red searchlight shining on him as he sat, Nero-like, in the amphitheatre of dreams.

*Not a euphemism.

400 games, and almost 200 goals with tens of assists for United. He's good enough as United legend, in my eyes. Won't bother me that much, even if he moves to the City or Chelsea, as long as he still respect United. For many of them, football is a career; and I sort of understand if players try to get the better deal for themselves.

I'm doing the same with my career. A sentiment can sometimes be a hindrance. And most of the time, money/wages determines where my career is going. So, I won't blame anyone who wants to do the same, including footballers.

He is already on what, £220,000/week? If the motive is purely financial how much more does he think he can get, of if we offered less this time around what is his value?

I think there must be a strong element here of him looking around at our recent acquisitions and younger players in the squad, and is beset by the uncertainty of his position as well as doubt that he can recover it sufficiently [most importantly not all that willing to try].

It's not his first transfer request. His reasons are easy to detect: it's because of him being an ungrateful, unprofessional and most of all greedy little prick and I'm still angry that we didn't sell him the first time around. His like a spoilt child that regularly throws his toys out of the pram and thinks he's better than he actually is. Not to forget how vastly overrated he is.

Compare him to a class act and class player like Robin.

Agree.

Strange how the likes of Hernandez, Welbeck and Kagawa aren't camped in Sir Alex's office, demanding they get selected for every match, throwing tantrums every time they get substituted or have to sit on the bench for 70 mins before they get the chance to play.

From the sound of your post, you support players, not the club. You hope Hernandez hands in a transfer request? You are either incredibly stupid, massively bitter or not a fan of the CLUB.

You second paragraph point is valid as well. I was just looking at it from the financial point of view. Although I doubt that he will move to club that offer him less wages, even if the team is 100% built around him.

I'm just saying, fair to him if one of the reasons he moves is because of better wage offered.

Yeah well, who gives a shit that signing a Cantono-esque catalyst has won us the league and set an example for the youngsters. Rooney is unsettled. Damn that Ferguson.

Are you sure you're a United fan? Hoping players hand in transfer requests?

feck off.

It is the guy who had a go at Anderson for daring to make a no-look pass...

My response to his post was originally going to just say feck OFF but I resisted... so well done!

Seems a bit of an idiot.. This place has gone a bit crazy in the last week. Hope it settles down soon.

Nice location, Nick. :)

Yes i thought it fitting, like as not it won't be there when we as supporters are tested for the first time but so long as enough of us remember the sentiment. It should require something rather irregular for Moyes not to get two years without the mob at the gates.

You'd think United got relegated today reading this post.

Wasnt Rooney's complaint the last time he requested a transfer that we didnt have enough world class players? Cant have his cake and eat it the same time.

I don't know where to start

Seems this place is self destructing at the moment. In the end the club is bigger than Rooney. If he stays or goes we will still be challenging for the league next season. Look at the big games like Real Madrid and such and Rooney wasn't in the starting eleven, so we will be fine without him.

I have a feeling SAF released the information to possibly confirm the rumours and allow the fans to put pressure on Rooney before the season ends. I wouldn't rule out Rooney doing a backflip and still being here next season.

As for Rooney, he wanted to leave citing ambition because we didn't have enough World Class players. Now that we went out and signed some players that are keeping him out, he wants to leave because he couldn't compete with them. Total respect for da man!

Prick.

If the players you mentioned can't handle competition for their place in the team then they're certainly at the wrong club, and perhaps even in the wrong sport.

Fortunately though I doubt that they're all complete Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime like yourself (with the seeming exception of Wayne Rooney), so we should be okay on that front for the time being.

This is a pisstake surely? If Robin didn't come here, he'll went to City instead. And I'm pretty sure given their lack of finishing in many games this season, they'll win the league instead
