Im not so sure. RvP is the better striker, Kagawa is the better AM.

If we are going to try to move our footballing philosophy towards a more fluid, quick short passing style then im not really sure how well todays Rooney fits that - at the moment he is more the long, direct passing sort, he doesnt dribble and he plays far more defensively than in times gone by - often passing back rather than taking someone on or playing the risky ball.

Some may disagree with the above, thats fine, its a matter of opinion. But for a #10 type role, I look at the likes of Silva, Mata, Cazorla etc and think that they are by far the more effective styles of player for that position - Rooneys robust, direct, "english" style of play is very attractive to the fans, but I dont think it is necessarily as effective as the other players I mentioned.

Kagawa on the other hand, is far more in that "modern" mould of #10. He does the short passing, he dribbles etc. IF we are trying to go towards that style of play then I dont think Rooney is irreplacable by any stretch.
Lets say that Rooney hypothetically goes to Madrid, and by the same deal with get Ronaldo back at Old Trafford - that could have us lining up something like;

-----------RvP----------
Nani --- Kagawa -- Ronaldo

As our front four. That is a pretty formidable attack, stronger than our current best lineup I would say. We would just need to sort the midfield out and we would be right up there with the Bayerns and Barcelonas on paper, I would say. Add Welbeck, Hernandez, Cleverley etc to the mix and there is good strength in depth there as well.

Obviously if Rooney were to go, it would have to be on the condition that we reinvest the money and buy some quality replacement(s). But I think Rooneys brand and reputation are far greater than his actual effectiveness and value as a footballer nowadays, and if we could get a good sum for him I wouldnt shed any tears.

Only big issue would be the damage to the clubs reputation - losing SAF and then losing the talisman figure of Rooney in one summer would be percieved as a huge loss and no doubt the media would be heralding some huge decline for the club as a result.

He's a very good player on his day but to put it into perspective for you, we replaced Eric with Teddy Sheringham....Teddy fecking Sheringham!...Things turned out nicely then my friend ;)

Things didn't turn out nicely at all, we had a fecking terrible season, then we went and spent a fortune and properly replaced Cantona with Yorke.

He's our best player and has been absolutely central to the greatest period of success in our history, his leaving would be bad enough if Fergie were still in charge, but in a transitional season with a new manager it'll all but guarantee we don't get anywhere near the title, unless we go out and buy a player of the very highest calibre to take his place in our attack. Which we all know we won't.

He could be our best player, that's up for debate, but he is certainly not our most important. If he really does want to go I would be disappointed because I always hoped he would become a legend at United but unfortunately that seems unlikely now; having said that, I really think he is past his best and he doesn't have the hunger he once had here...the time could be right for him to move and I'm confident we can replace him (Ronaldo )

People don't actually think there's a genuine chance we'd sell him to Chelsea do they? :wenger:

Well it could happen. If he is desperate to leave United this summer and he doesnt want to leave England, then we might not have choice in the matter rather than to sell him to Chelsea and take the money.

Do you live in opposite world? The press constantly, constantly slag him off. There's been a "is Rooney past it?" article in a major paper on average once every two months for the last six years.

It's crazy, he's one of Englands best players and they absolutely crucify him to wind everyone up. Sometimes I am gape jawed at things that get written in the media about him.

I don't see it happening, unless it's obscene money being offered. He will most likely go abroad and then come crawling back due to homesickness.

Keane out for the season, Giggs missing and Pally missing for two months, Johnsen out for 3 weeks, Shmikes out for 3 weeks, Scholes, Beckham, Butt and Neville all forced to play with injuries because we had no one else at a vital point in the season...Just the way things panned out that year with injuries

wr8, you really are the archetypal fanboy, your posts are dripping with cringe.

Yeah, just because I don't hate him and call him a c**t and hurl abuse at him because of 2010 and this apparent transfer request and don't want him sold. We should all just hate one of our best players for a mistake he made 3 years ago.

Like others have said, the major worry here is that he's not denying anything. I'm not one to jump on the bandwagon like a mindless zombie, but a denial after the occurrence is often fairly standard if they're not leaving. In fact players will often still deny even if they are, which makes it seem suspicious to me.

:nono:

You could have made your point without a gratuitous slur on SteveJ's family.

If it's any consolation, I've always hated him from his Everton days... Consistency is the key

I really don't see how we'll sell Rooney anywhere in England. We'd know better than anyone what happens when you sell a brilliant player to your rivals. I see him still here come 1st September, 2013 after he's signed a new 2 year extension to his deal.

I just don't see the point in keeping him here when he's requested to leave on two occasions. Unless Moyes can change his mind, we should just get rid. No point in keeping a player here against his own motives.

Blatter: "Yes, I think that Rooney is being treated like a slave. And like a slave, he should be sold; preferably to the Spanish club that I have no connection with whatsoever."

I can imagine Moyes walking into the training ground on the first day...Scanning across the dressing room and fixing his eyes on Rooney and with a big smile on his face, saying the words..

"I'll have the last laugh now ye wee fat feck!!"

Rawk called, they want their prose back.

That's a matter for the PR department.

They'll brief their contacts in the media playing up his commitment issues in regard to fitness, imply that a deal on a new contract would not have been possible and that the squad is evolving.

He used to be an iconic player for us, not so much any longer.

I think we all established the fact that Rooney is the leak himself so I don't see this approach working.

Oh god that was an awful period, Schmeichel running back against Arsenal, Ben Thornley and some other generically named players playing in title deciders. Pallister getting outpaced by Owen despite having the entire field as head start.

 Always remember that...He had a massive head start then slowed down and got out paced..Madness

Think that's the moment Pallister was a dead man walking.

Our team in the 0-1 defeat to Arsenal

fecking hell, who was playing where? And we moan about our current team selections.

Peter Schmeichel
Gary Neville
Denis Irwin
Henning Berg
John Curtissub 52
Ronny Johnsensub 79
David Beckham
Phil Nevillesub 77
Andy Cole
Teddy Sheringham
Paul Scholes

I'd like it to go something like this;

I was at that match and the rumours outside the ground were that Giggs would be fit enough to start and that Pally was having a late fitness test...

Went into the ground and heard over the PA that Curtis was starting and Thornley was on the bench....feck me did my arse drop. Although, we wasted several chances that day to win.

Overmars tore Curtis a new one that day

so how much do we reckon Rooney is worth?
2 years left on contract - if we got an offer of £40m+, I would sell.

He's still stayed silent hasn't he? Not a peep from him re Fergie's retirement, Moyes' appointment or the speculation surrounding him. Interesting.

For the last time - Rooney has NOT asked for a move. The hysteria over his Twitter acc is laughable. Grow up please. Do Utd have an agenda?
