More pertinent question: why do all the pundits and journalists think having to fight for one's place is a bad thing?
because they are all idiots who can't compete themselves :). In their experience if someone comes to there job to compete with them, they lose and have to move to another tabloid.

Apart from the competition for places, which is a great thing, the fact that a decent rest for Rooney will do him the world of good and once he gets up and running again, we should really see the benefit around Christmas onwards. In the meantime, the new boys will get a chance to find their feet.

Yeah. Actually I see more of a reason to create a fuss about Nani given his contract situation hasn't been sorted and more importnalty, he wasn't even on the bench. But Rooney, being England's star, makes for a better headline.

My thoughts also. It doesn't seem to make sense to make for SAF to make such an apparent statement in his notes only to them bring Rooney on at a point where he wasn't really needed.

SAF was obviously delivering a message to Rooney by putting him on the bench that he doesn't seem to be up to the required sharpness and fitness, that his peers seem to be.

Nani, however, was nowhere to be seen despite starting the previous game. SAF's comments seem to strike much more accurately with Nani's situation at present whe considering the stalling contract talks and a much greater possibility of getting his head turned by Spanish sides, considering his background.

To me it's pretty apparent that this is only an issue due to the fact that it's Rooney and it's United, anything regarding either of those will sell due to both being well known around the world.

First of all I'm pretty sure he wanted to give both of the new signings a full home debut, most probably that played a part in the selection.
Second it's not like Rooney wasn't involved in the match, and it's not like we needed a goal when he came on.

Then there's also the fact that due to us having so many options up front rotation is vital in keeping players happy, I'm well aware of the fact that Rooney and RvP (and probably Kagawa) will see more minutes than any other player, but you can't just play the same players and ignore the others, regardless of the fact that it was only the 2nd game of the season.

I'm not worried at all about Rooney or his place in this squad, if I had to single out a player and say he's the team's main man it would have to be Rooney, no doubt about it. Who knows, the rest might probably do him good, last season he started off so well because he finaly had a "free" summer, so he was fresh, that wasn't the case this season and quite a few before that.

My guess is he'll be back after 4 weeks, whether it be a substitute appearance at first or not, there's no doubt in my mind he'll be back in the starting XI in no time once he comes back, and ready to score goals.
And by then we should also have an actual back four consisting fully of defenders so that should help the overall play as well, I think we're just getting started and should start playing better each game, and once Rooney comes back we'll be locked & loaded to take on any team.

"Just want to thank everyone for their messages of support. Gutted to be out for a while but my leg will be ok which is the main thing"

From Facebook.

Translated slogan: 'Courage becomes greater through a wound'.

I can't find a reason why, but this just made me feel a bit more positive.

I'm starting to think that half the caf has some sort of weird body dysmorphia by proxy.

And amnesia, because we regularly get to see Wayne, and he's almost never looking like what posters say he does. I can guarantee you someone will say he's carrying extra weight in his next appearence.

He's looked exactly the fecking same for years now. Maybe ever so slightly heavier at the beginning of pre-season but otherwise looks no slimmer/fatter from the first competitive game to the final game of the season. Despite this, the moment he has a poor game anywhere near to the summer break you'll get all the comments about how much timber he's carrying. It's very strange. I've known anorexics with a more accurate body image than some of the comments I've read on here about Rooney these last few weeks.

Pretty much it, start of pre-season aside (which is quickly burned off) he's basically always looked the same. It is strange. It's known that Rooney takes a few games to get going, hell it used to be the same for the United team as a whole, but each season when he doesn't kick off straight into top form, the question of his fitness comes up every single time!

He's a brave fellow. You'd have thought he'd just got a wack by the way he reacted to it initially. Welbeck was freaked out when he saw the wound.

i'd bet Rooney will be back earlier than expected

He's a tough kid

That sofa looks cracker

I wish I was only that fat.

He has one of them Bang and Olufsen Beocom phones. Flashy cnut.

Jesus, Talksport are going mental over this at the moment. You'd think he'd put in a transfer request the way they are talking it up.

Talk shite is the radio tabloid, big up any rumour for a show. In N years time if Rooney moves on from United they will do a show telling us how they predicted this all along. Lets face it its any story for a show Durham and that ex-cricketer/dancer with an IQ of 80.

hmmmm........soft feather cushions, fleecy-style polyester fabric, nice, soft & warm. Good shagging sofa.

Well as long as it didn't translate to "I'm off to City" , I'm happy enough.

Just a random thought. We need a midfielder, Barcelona has too many midfielders.... How would the caftards feel towards a Rooney for Busquets exchange?

I would stop watching United if we signed that cheating, piss spirited piece of sh*t.

He is the embodiment of all that is wrong with football.

Not in a million years. Busquets is a good player but not in Rooney's class, and him being one of the biggest cheats in world football would just make it worse. A more fair trade would be Rooney for Fabregas but even then I wouldn't want it. Simply put, you can't really trade a player for Rooney and get an upgrade if it's not Messi, Ronaldo or Iniesta. Xavi is a better player but at his age it wouldn't be worth it.

Anyways this is just pointless talk cause he's not going anywhere.
