Perhaps it was the trailing foot, can't remember. I do distinctly recall one of Rooney's legs being taken from under him as he went to strike the ball. Was a free kick all day long.

The replays showed Ramires got the ball....

I didn't think it was a foul, you're allowed to make some contact, and it looked like he got a big chunk of the ball. I haven't seen it since the initial incident but it looked like he just got in ahead of Rooney who actually looked like he went into Ramires. Either way it doesn't excuse Rooney of completely letting his man go a few times.

He seems to be making a habit of berating referees, for whatever reason(s). I wonder if it's genuine exasperation at the officials or frustration with his game, or his team-mates or...well, only he knows.

It was definitely a foul. Ramires fouled Rooney with his left foot just before winning the ball with his right. There's a camera angle facing the two players that shows it perfectly, someone should gif it.

That's hardly a new thing though is it? He's always done it. I remember that volley against Newcastle coming 2 seconds after clearly giving the ref an absolute earful!

[POGUE MODE ON] I thought he was class [POGUE MODE OFF].

No, only God knows.

There is certainly something not right about him. He looks low on confidence, but also rather sluggish. If we do keep him, I hope he makes an effort to get fully fit over pre-season, unlike last season where it was reported that he was in a poor shape.

This.

All too true. I'm thinking that a 39 year old Giggs would outpace Rooney at this stage, and he couldn't have done that two years ago. Rooney looks way off the pace, and he also seems unwilling or unable to track back well. Wasn't he considered one of the fastest in the PL once? He's lost more pace than Torres!

Thats the issue for me.

He's clearly a very talented footballer, and has a great attitude on the pitch. That's not, and never has been in doubt.

The potential problem is his fitness. He's played an awful lot of games for a player his age, and with respect, doesn't look the most naturally fit of players.

His problems come when he's had a spell out, and it takes him a while to get his sharpness back. The older he gets, the harder its going to be to stay fit, and more likely it is he'll pick up injuries. Maybe playing since the aage of 16 is cathcing up.

Hopefully he can get back to where he was, failing which he needs to change his game. Has ptential to boss a game from midfield but currently gives the ball away too much for my liking.

I think another problem is that he was the main man at the club after Ronnie left...did a brilliant job upfront...but we still went out and signed somebody better.

If I were Rooney's personal advisor, this is what I would advise:

The day after the season is over, take a 2 week break from all football activity, hopping from tropical island to tropical island and doing things to Colleen that cannot be discussed in front of polite company. Eat well (as in healthy, not some of the crap that passes for "food" in the UK) and get plenty of rest, but don't let yourself go. Maybe even read some books, whether historical fiction or Anne Rice novels, something to make the brain perform some basic functions.

After your 2 weeks are up you begin moderate conditioning for a few days at a secret Nike campground, just to wake the body up. Then go full bore with a Spartacus workout, shedding those extra 5-8 pounds that you've been carrying the last few years. You want to see muscle definition in your abs, delts, thighs, maybe even some veins popping out of your neck and calves.

Now that you've gotten yourself into proper condition for a footballer you're ready to go into pre-season training, in full seek-and-destroy mode when the season begins.

Do the conditioning, Wayne, and your natural ability will carry you far. Very far.

I don't know if his issues are purely down to conditioning but it certainly would help.

 Sure he will, he always come back after every summer as big as a house.

I'm exaggerating but he does seem to carry a bit of timber at the start of every season.

Not totally true. I distinctly remember him being lauded at the beginning of 11/12 for his improved conditioning at the start of the season. I really hope he looks after himself this close season, and that he hits the ground running next season.

Though he's been nowhere near as bad as some have suggested this season, it feels like his season has just never got going this time round - he began out of shape, then picked up that nasty injury.

Wow that's very harsh to criticize him for the goal, yes he shouldn't have lost the ball and yes he shouldn't have stopped to talk with Webb but the rest is OTT

Nani got a bashing for it when he did it against the same lot in the Carling Cup. Extremely stupid, especially when Sir Alex endorsed the same sentiment.

Rooney is quality and a special player on his day, but as has been said many times his lower level is really low, and I wonder if we'd be better off getting someone more consistent, like Lewandovski.

:lol::lol::lol: You do realise they EAT books in toxteth? Struggling with Janet and John is hardly going to improve his state of mind

Lewandowski's pass completion for the season is around 73% whilst Rooney's is around 83%. Remember that Rooney giving the ball away is one of peoples main gripes with him. Do people think that Lewandowski plays an exemplary all round game or something?

Lewandowski has been playing as the main forward this season though, and Dortmund like to play in a different style to United, faster, counter attacking, so it's no surprise Lewandowski gives the ball away more. Rooney has been in midfield at times, and likes to play the percentages more often than not. Lewandowski's linking up, hold up play and finishing is what's seperated him from most this season.

Rooney's pass completion rate is usually higher than that. I think if people are expecting Lewandowski to be some sort of perfect and never frustrating player then they are going to be unpleasantly surprised.

If we got rid of Rooney we'd be comfortable not buying another centre forward. To improve our team we'd need to improve central midfield or our wingers. Something like bringing in Bale for Rooney would improve us despite Bale not being much better than Rooney as a player.

I would rather have Rooney than Bale.

In 90% of teams I'd rather have Rooney than Bale. In our team however, Rooney is not the best player in any position and our wingers aren't good enough.

I would rather have Rooney than Bale.

Not for me.

Bale has a vast amount of potential and is seriously on the up. At United he would become one of the best players in the world.

As much as I hate to say it, I fear Rooney may have played his best football. He clearly still has a lot to offer, but as another poster puts it above - he's not the "best" player in any particular position. Given what he earns I think that's a problem.

Thats a problem? Really? Are you forgetting his versatility? Are you forgetting that he put the needs of his team ahead of himself and was willing to adapt to new positions? Are you also forgetting that no other player in our team can play so many positions and be good at all of them? He may not be at his peak right now but there arent many players in the world right now that are like Rooney.

Not just his versatility either. His sheer fecking quality. So he didnt score as many goals this season, maybe because he played in midfield a lot of the time. But when he last played regularly up front he was a goal machine and he would be again.

Such short memories, one fairly indifferent season and its out with the old and in with the new.
