Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

Just as Welbeck has been played out wide most of this season with little fuss. I get what you're saying has Wayne is a much better player than Welbeck. My point is though, I don't think Fergie would be shunting him around as much if his performances were better. His stats are great mind

When exactly has he gotten the chance to be the lone striker on the team? The one time I remember him playing without RvP was vs Newcastle in his comeback game and he probably had his game of the season in that match. I don't think it's fair to say he wouldn't be shunted around if his performances were better when he's almost never gotten to play in his preferred role this season.

The last time Rooney consistently played as a lone striker was 2009/2010, I don't know why all of a sudden people are acting like he's out of position if he's playing as a number 10.

Hm well in that game we played a 4-3-3 and if I remember correctly Hernandez was the lead striker but interestingly enough, Welbeck, and him interchanged positions from time to time. I'm not sure a cup match is the best indicator for Wayne's best position. It's something United fans have argued about ever since he signed. Are you now saying Wayne's best position is the lead striker? What Rooney says is his preferred role seems to change. He also said he prefers playing deeper some time ago as he's more involved with the build-up play. Some of his best performances in recent seasons have come playing as a second striker as well. In 09/10, we saw Rooney the goalscorer. He really didn't exhibit more than that as I remember he was criticised for not adding enough to the build-up play. After that, he played deeper and we saw him more as a provider but he still scored goals. He had a hat-trick against West Ham which was pivotal in us winning the title. Where did he play then? Second striker if I'm not mistaken. In essence, I'm not sure he has a 'best' position because it's changed throughout his career.

I'm sorry but I dont think your argument works in this case. IMO, Rooney's versatility is working against him. Tie that into his inconsistent performances and you have a bit of an issue. We may have seen the best of him if RvP and never came and won the title but people forget the times he was injured this season. Perhaps Welbeck/Hernandez would have been enough but we won't ever really know. Maybe playing as a 9 is best for him at this stage in his career. Yet, you have some fans saying he should be even deeper and some going as far as saying he should play more in midfield.

He wanted more quality in the team so we got some. Whilst providing good stats for this season, his performances have been very inconsistent. It was only until recently did SAF decide to move him to other positions. Other, it was consistently as the second striker. Where fans said he exhibited his qualities best and showed how he was the heartbeat of the team. But now because he's not performing up to scratch, it's simply because he's not playing as a 9? I doubt that's what you're really arguing. There's a reason why we people have debated his best position. I doubt he even knows for certain to tell you the truth. It's sometimes the price you pay for being a jack-of-all trades.

EDIT: From my notes, Wayne actually started out right but it didn't matter because he interchanged with Welbeck and Hernandez.

He defintely played on right in that game, and the game after in CL(home I think).

Ronaldo on being asked who's the best he's ever played with [August 2012]

"Wayne Rooney, who else? He wasalways right beside me, shielding people so i could get on ahead, score, assist my goals with those ridiculous passes, he sacrificed his
role for me when i was there, so, he's the best i've ever played with, no doubt, after that
comes Paul [Scholes]''

He has a great understanding with lots of different forward partners.

Quote from Tevez

I’ve had the honour of playing with some great players.

“At United, I had Cristiano in my team and obviously I have Messi in the national team.

“At Boca Juniors I had striker Martin Palermo for a team-mate – he was very impressive. He was the one who put two goals past Real Madrid in Japan.

“But the one I like the most is Rooney. He has everything. He’s very complete.

Quote from Berbatov

"Ronaldo was a fantastic player for us and I'm sure he will be very good for Real Madrid,"

"But, for me, our biggest talent is and always was - even last season - Wayne Rooney.

"He is an incredible talent and will be one of the best players in Europe for many years to come.

Saha also said something on twitter like Rooney was his favourite forward to play with because he gave him more assists.

The Mirror has a story linking Rooney with Munich now. I guess the PSG story had gone a bit stale then.

And yet no one wants Valencia. Ronaldo to United stories to start next I guess!

Martin Lipton. That's all you need to know. Utter fecking hogwash of the highest order.

The Mirror has a story linking Rooney with Munich now. I guess the PSG story had gone a bit stale then.

Wayne Rooney has told team-mates he wants to sign for Bayern Munich this summer.

The Manchester United striker has grown increasingly frustrated with his role at Old Trafford.

And now the German Champions League finalists are believed to be close to sealing a £30million deal to add the England striker to their *star-studded line-up.

Rooney has consistently been linked with moves away from Old Trafford amid reports Sir Alex Ferguson has grown fed-up with his fitness issues.

The United manager has denied that Rooney will be sold but it now appears he accepts the England striker will leave.

And Rooney is thought to be flattered by the interest of a club which has won the Bundesliga this season and is being tipped to dominate European football for the next few years.

He is also intrigued by the prospect of working with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who will take over at Bayern in the summer.

The Spaniard wants Rooney to be one of the high-profile new signings to help him put his own stamp on the Bavarian giants.

And after Rooney has played in the shadow of Robin van Persie for much of this season, United also believe that the time is now right to sell.

It had been thought that French giants PSG were favourites to prise him away from Old Trafford at the end of the season.

But they have fallen behind in the battle to capture Rooney, who made the switch to United from Everton for £24m in 2004.

There is also believed to be late interest from an elite English club keen on gatecrashing Munich’s bid.

The last line?

If he is frustrated here how exactly is he going to be happy at Bayern? They have a shit load of young and talented players. He will be competiting with Kroos, Gotze and Muller.

Rumour mill really is spinning on Rooney at the moment, but I guess with the Title wrapped up so early, they need something to talk about. Cue title winners players looking to leave reports. I still think that Rooney will be here next season.

Torres - 50m
Falcao - 30m
Carroll - 35m
Hulk - 32m
Rooney - 30m

Sorry, no way.

Or he would be competing with Mandzukic and Gomez..

If Pep really wants to bring him to Bayern, that may be a problem for us.

I really don't see Rooney starting for Bayern. Who would he displace? Muller...Gotze? I don't think so.

It's all bullshit, but great fodder for the garbage that's euphemistically called sports journalism in England.

^Like I said, he would replace Mandzukic as the main striker.

I agree it's probably bullshit though.

Hasn't Mandzukic been sensational for Bayern this season?

Generally speaking, you don't replace a player who's been white hot with a player who's been mediocre, especially if he's on a massive wage bill. But I could be wrong about that!

Gomez scored 41 goals last season and got displaced by Mandzukic because the latter is a better all round striker than him. It would be the same in this case with Rooney being a better striker/player than Mandzukic.

Heynckes values Mandzukics work rate and his defensive contribution, which is pretty essential with how Bayern plays this season.

This was especially evident in the game against Juve where he and Kroos consistently interrupted Pirlos build up play taking him out of the game almost entirely.

The fact that Bayern has a lot of other players who will score double figures over a season allows them to have a striker who isn't an absolute goal machine.

Of course all this will probably change under Pep again and some other type of striker might be preferred but idk if Rooney and his sometimes questionable attitude is that kind of striker he is looking for.

Another point is that I'm almost certain that Lewandwoski has already agreed a deal with it, otherwise Bild and Lewandowski's agents wouldn't repeat this over and over again, so signing Rooney would make little to no sense for them.

I told my German mate about this Rooney to Bayern rumour.

His response..."Is this some sort of joke?"

German's eh!

I wouldn't be off by that response. It's a German defensive mechanism, they don't have jokes in their culture so they make sure they ask that question every time someone who speaks English tells them something.

Not German: "I walked into a shop the other day"

German: "Is this some sort of a joke?

Not German: "No Jürgen, no it isn't."

That's what I thought, he wants to go to Bayern, do they actually want him? I love the way players come out and dictate where they would like to play. It's not up to you sweetheart.

Rooney is significantly better than Mandzukic, and in their request to develop a 'perfect team', Mandzukic would be one of the first options to improve upon. He really isn't that good.

Are you imagining that Rooney has tried to dictate anything?

A lot depends on if Fergie himself is still the manager in the summer. I'm slightly less certain of that after Tuesday's match.

Not sure where this leaves Wayne, all depends on the manager. I think we will get in Moyes and if so, Rooney will leave.

One thing is for certain though, news like today's puts into perspective just how insignificant Rooney is at this club. Just a football player really.

Incase we hire him, what's the relationship like between Moyes and Rooney? Read that Moyes sued Rooney for something he wrote in his autobiography but that was a few years ago.
