Pretty bad. But can't really blame him as he is never one to look interested once a season is done.

Can't say this was a good season for him and if we really do try and bring in the dortmund striker or falcao, would that mean a permanent move into midfield for him?

Bloody well hope not.

I think he's trying to get sold judging by recent performances, pretty woeful again.

Wow that's very harsh to criticize him for the goal, yes he shouldn't have lost the ball and yes he shouldn't have stopped to talk with Webb but the rest is OTT

He got tackled on the edge of the opposition area ffs, and you're blaming him for a goal which came after we'd won the ball back?

Yeah that's a ridiculous thing to blame him for.

Wasn't a good performance from him otherwise though.

He annoyed me the most today. Attitude just appears all wrong, which is something you never usually say about Rooney. He should have been dying to get on and influence the game. Not mess around like the game's already won.

I admit he wasn't great but I don't know what you were watching if he annoyed you more than Valencia.

Sometimes I think he doesn't want to play CM and tries to tell Fergie by looking uninterested and playing shitty but somehow SAF seems intent of tormenting him.

I really wish we'd just give him the final 2 games up front and drop RvP for a game or two. It's tiring watch him in midfield where he's never going to get a goal. A goal could do his confidence wonders right now.

RvP is undroppable. It won't happen. Hernandez deserved to play there today ahead of him. Even during a 10 game goal drought when he was looking jaded and off the pace Hernandez or Rooney couldn't get a game in that position.

That's been going on for about 6 months now, I'm used to it. :)

It's a shame that those performances have become Valencia's standard :( the Second half against Villa gave me false hope.

The increasing number of games where Rooney looks semi-detached is quite worrying.

If, as seems likely, Lewandowski is destined for Bayern, Rooney will surely be staying at OT; in which case he needs to improve his attitude.

I've said it before, but his last few months reminds me of Ruud's last season here.

So let me get this straight, he loses the ball outside Chelsea's box, he legs it back while arguing with Webb, he then goes to mark Mata, lets him run towards our goal so he can argue more with Webb and Mata then proceeds to score...

Seriously, some of you need to open your eyes to Wayne Rooney! Can be devastating on his day but his days are too rare these days

So he comes on, plays a stupid pass to the opposition near the half way line when it was easier to pass it directly to Cleverley(?). Yup typical Rooney.

It wasn't Cleverley as Rooney and Buttner came on for Cleverley and Anderson, but Rooney did look out of sorts when he came on, it's going to be interesting to see what happens with him.

I'm getting a bit tired of his attitude on the pitch. I'm not saying he needs to chase every single ball or track back all the time but show some bit of fight instead moping around the pitch.

He was hilariously bad when he came on. You can't even take that performance seriously because he obviously wasn't arsed. He can play far better than that so I wouldn't be all that fussed.

Perhaps it supports the view that Wayne Rooney is better off starting a match than coming off the bench

Christ, that's really clutching at straws. That misplaced short pass on the halfway line was quite inexplicable.

I think he is good at dropping deep as a 10 sometimes, but being a deep lying CM and being responsible for dictating the team's tempo is something he is not suited to.

Lots of players are better starting than coming off the bench actually. The 1999 strikers were talking about it recently and Cole said he struggled to get into the rhythm and flow of the game off the bench whereas Ole said he used it to his advantage by studying the back 4 and looking for weaknesses/mistakes to exploit.

I'm not excusing Rooney's performance because I thought he was poor yesterday but Plato's post its not as unfathomable as you're making out. Plus I think most people agree that he's a better number 10 or number 9 than a deep lying CM which he's only attempted a few times, some people just wanted to see him there a few times in the dead rubbers to get a better judgment.

Which is why we need a CM so we can put an end to this "rooney in midfield" nonsense.

I dont think SAF sees the midfield as that important. Yesterday's substitutions and previous constant tinkering with the midfield almost suggests its an area he overlooks. He took off the only two actual CMs on the pitch leaving only a centre back and a 39 year old winger to play there. A dead rubber isn't the best game to judge him on but over the season too it seems he reckons anything goes in midfield - forwards and defenders win you games. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't buy a CM as outrageous as it sounds. We will buy more forwards and shoehorn current players into CM. Giggs will be this seasons Scholes and Rooney will slot in to paper over the cracks. Midfield?.. What midfield?!

I don't know if that's half tongue in cheek or what but it doesn't make sense. Numerous times this season especially he has noted the importance and influence of Carrick in CM.

We don't even have anyone to play alongside him consistently as well as in place of him.

I don't understand why he feels the need to feck around with everyone's position. Worst thing is he isn't even shoehorning the players into a specific formation, but trying to put them in a flat 4-4-2 at times. Rooney CM, Kagawa CM/LM.

Maybe a bit tongue in cheek but I wouldn't be that surprised if we didn't buy a CM actually.
And we don't play a 'flat' 4-4-2 often though. I'd rather SAF strengthened the areas that need strengthening over the summer but his comments about going for any player that's good if they're available regardless of position doesn't leave me with much optimism. Jones and Rooney will continue to be our midfield fillers.

I just read that bit about going for any player that is quality regardless of the position. Unless we are signing Ronaldo or Bale that comment has killed me a little.

He'll feel much better once he's shaved that hair off. You did your best, Rooney, but it's over. You look better without it.

I'm surprised by this thread. Not that I thought Rooney played WELL but simply that coming on late in the game with a very bizarre midfield lineup, he didn't strike me as a standout poor performance - I thought he was just "meh".
And a few times in CM he has looked pretty good, although you can attribute some of that to Carrick who makes others look good.

Generally I think if we had a big offer of like £45m+ we should take it. We have good alternate strikers, we have attacking midfielders... We don't have central midfielders but hopefully with that money we could get some. He isn't indispensable, and his reputation exceeds his performances.

I don't think he played well yesterday but definitely don't think we should sell him. Still one of our best players and were not Arsenal so I don't see why we should be selling our best players.

Remember when Nani lost the ball on the edge of Chelsea's box in the cup game and they scored after winning a penalty? Didn't stop the manager and lots of fans blaming Nani for the whole scenario.

Do people realise we actually won the ball back between Rooney losing it and Chelsea scoring? It's ridiculous to blame him.

Doesn't really matter if him losing the ball led directly to the goal or not because within a couple of minutes of coming on he played yet another one of those insanely complacent passes in the centre circle, tried to recover by tracking Ramires but didn't bother following him all the way into the box and ultimately would have been solely responsible for giving a goal away if Ramires had hit shooting boots on.

I thought Rooney was fouled in the build up to Chelsea's goal - Webb made a poor decision. As his shooting foot went into back lift, he was tripped and that triggered the counter.

I'm sick of his can't be arse mode, which happens far more often

Take a look at other teams top owner, they're there based on perfomance, and more often consistency. Getting paid 250k / week means you're one of the star player in the team, and at the moment, he's not showing that he have earned it.

Sorry, it's not about the money, but when you haggle for a big contract, you're expected to perform

How bout some consistency? That's why I'd never put him in the Giggs, Keane, Scholes, Neville bracket

It was the trailing foot that caught Rooney wasn't it? The idiot calling the game kept saying he got the ball

Perhaps it was the trailing foot, can't remember. I do distinctly recall one of Rooney's legs being taken from under him as he went to strike the ball. Was a free kick all day long.

Rooney's trailing foot was definitely caught by Ramires' left foot. No wonder Rooney was furious with Webb.

It wasn't a nasty foul by Ramires but it was definitely a foul, Rooney was in a shooting position and was caught. No idea how Webb didn't see it or didn't deem it to be a foul. And the ball had been recovered in defence, sent forward stupidly by I can't remember who and controlled poorly by Giggs in midfield (when Rooney was actually better placed to try to control the poorly cleared ball actually). But yeah let's blame him for the goal.

As for his poor pass minutes after coming on, it was towards Giggs who was all over the place. It was a typical "player on the wing passes the ball blindly to his CM" pass, where a person out wide falls back into the center towards a player offering a solution. Rooney didn't actually look towards Giggs at the moment he made the pass but had taken the information a couple of seconds before that. Giggs, who was then in CM, decided to make a burst forwards, which was the wrong decision and which made Rooney's pass look foolish when it wasn't half as bad as it's being made out, and would have been fine if in Giggs' place, there had been a real CM who knows that you should always be available for that kind of ball.

But I agree that overall his performance was very average and he didn't look bothered. Then again, not many really did.

According to some, that Chelsea's game was just a meaningless game. We are champions already. So any lack of effort is just because player isn't motivated anymore.
