The people saying that he's regressed because he doesn't take on his man as much anymore, would probably be the ones complaining if he started attempting to and lost possession quite a bit. Rooney's not regressed, he's just more mature and technical on the pitch now than he was when he first came here. More effective too, as stats show.

Yes it was. You really are a sad tosser.

Wow, you really are pitiful, and pitifully committed to winning arguments against those defending one of the all time leading scorers for the football club you claim to support. Christ, this forum needs an ignore button.

This is a valid point Shark. Question is, has Wayne Rooney lost some of his spark as a result? Some say this happens to young talents anyway.

Chabon, we don't have an ignore button? That's interesting if people believe he's gotten worse. He's improved certain aspects of his game as the years have gone on. Heading is a great example.

The modern Rooney is more productive and scores far more goals than the old Rooney, no question. But then the old Rooney linked up and dictated the play better in my opinion. Which one people prefer is a matter of opinion, but I find these 'makes the team click' comments nonsense.

By spark, do you mean excitement? in that case, I'd agree he has. However, as I said he's now a much more effective player, more complete.

Maybe you'll get lucky with the new update, defender and protector of Rooney.

He's just become a much smarter, and therefore much better player. It happens with almost all great players. Just compare the best two in the world to who they were five years ago, much duller, and much better.

To be fair, Rooney has always been an intelligent forward, even at a young age.

I don't think it's wrong to suggest that Rooney makes us tick in the final third. It's no surprise than most of our losses this season have come without Rooney in the team and this is something that happens most seasons iirc. He links up midfield and attack really well, he's all over the pitch, scores or assists pretty much every game in the PL and shows a lot of passion and drive and will be running around making crucial tackles even in the 93rd minute. I don't know how it's wrong to suggest that Rooney is the man who makes this team tick. RvP has had a better season than Rooney this season and that has a lot to do with Rooney not playing in his preferred positions and being injured a number of times but I think still we'd miss Rooney far more than we'd miss RvP over a period of time.

That's an interesting point actually and quite true. I wonder if the people that go on and on about his shit touch and form be happy if he completely stopped getting involved in play and just put in 30 odd goals a season as that would mean he's not showcasing his shit touch that often or losing possession. I think Rooney is very capable of just staying up front all match and hit in the goals like he was doing last season.

If he played as a number 9 for a whole season, and stayed fit, he'd likely score 40+

Hell, the one season that was true he was well on for it until that German fecker stood on his foot, and he's probably a better finisher now.

Maybe because he doesn't? Jaysus!

This is honestly what I would like to see from now on, his touch just isn't consistent enough any more to be the main creative force in our team. The goals and assists are constants though, no matter what form he is in.

If his goals and assists are constant e.g. winning us matches then that's good enough for me to be our main creative force. Yes he may make some poor passes but if he plays it safe ALL the time then he obviously won't create or score like he does. Regardless of that, his passing accuracy in general is pretty good.

he does more than any other player in the squad, with the exception of maybe Carrick. They are the 2 players that we miss the most and I can't see how anyone who watches us on a regular basis can not see that.

He can do that up top without negatively impacting our play when his touch inevitably goes to shit.

What concerns me is how lax he is defensively compared to a few seasons ago. Maybe it has something to do with 2009/10 where he played up top as a poacher but he's never shown the same tactical discipline since then.

His efforts to shackle Busquets in 2011 and Pirlo in 2012 were poor and when a 39 year old is picked ahead of you to help do a defensive job, you've got to ask some questions of yourself. His defensive work in the first leg was very poor.

Your statement is very vague. What exactly do you mean? If that was the case, why was he benched against Madrid? Are you saying he's contributed more than RvP this season? Please elaborate.

My take is Carrick is the player we miss the most and everyone else fluctuates with that. I think he is the one who really makes us tick. He is our enabler in the team, that allows our attacking players to do what they do. He also plays a major part maintaining our defensive shape. Obviously Rooney, RvP are also key players and you need them throughout a season. When we've done well without Rooney in the team, it makes you wonder sometimes. Reading these posts, it's like we're a one-man team. Yet, everyone will refute that idea.

There are times where we miss Rooney and times where we don't. At the end of the day, it's up to him how vital he is to the team. The distinction for me is Rooney is not the difference but he makes a difference. Just as any key player does for their respective team.

Let's see what he does now with a run of games. Hopefully he can stay healthy and further strengthen his partnership with RvP as the season draws to a close.

I recognise Rooney is an important player in this squad. For my own reasons, I don't see him as the heartbeat or as a player who makes us tick. He's a player who improves us certainly. I think there's a slight difference between what those two things mean.

Hence why Welbeck may be favored in games where we need more tactical discipline. What you highlight was also the case in the Euros. It was clear against Italy, either Rooney or Welbeck needed to drop on Italy's deepest midfielder. Most of the time, that was Pirlo but while Rooney did a great job of completing this task during part of the first half, he suddenly stopped doing it. It's not as if he lost interest in the game, but he just stopped tracking back as he needed to.

I remember Fergie saying he didn't want Wayne to do this and he needed to focus saving energy for where it counted. This lad just can't win these days a brilliant player who is well on his way to becoming all time top goal scorer but never fully appreciated since that I want to leave episode!

I don't see that as a negative though. I really can't see the point in spending 20+ million on a forward who spends a third of his time at left back, he should be upfront making things happen and the more time he spends there the better.

What are you talking about mate? How many players are really fully appreciated in the actual sense? I wouldn't be surprised if some Barca fans dont fully appreciate Messi. Though they would be in the minority.

That's interesting you say Fergie doesn't want him to do this yet he sticks him out wide to do a job defensively.

While I understand the sentiment, in some ways, I don't get it. You're only looking at Rooney's career from one angle. There's a lot more than what's on the surface. If I really wanted to be tedious, I would go into detail about what it can mean to be 'fully appreciated'. You'd be surprised what that can look like. But let me not bore you. Enjoy your morning sir.

At his best, Wayne Rooney is the ideal definition of a Manchester United player IMO, and there are few players who have that combination of passion, and technical ability. He is 27 years of age now, and although he has struggled with injuries this year, when he has got himself out on the field, he has played pretty well IMO. He is absolutely crucial to what we do in an attacking sense, and you tend to find that the majority of attacking moves are played through him - as would be the case with any number 10.

I could be mistaken, but out of all the games we have lost this season, he has played in only one. Put it this way, if someone told me that United are in the Champions League final tomorrow, and I had to pick a team for it, Wayne Rooney would be in there every single time. We are simply a better team with him in it, and I know that we have the strength in depth to cover for him, but at the end of the day, he is a genuine match winner.

For me, RVP's arrival has split opinions of him, but you have to remember that they are a pair. When Rooney wasn't playing all on in the year, we struggled, and although we have won games without him, we do miss him when he's not there. He isn't a 'touch' number 10 like David Silva, but he offers so much in other areas, and there aren't too many who are as strong all round as Rooney. People wax miracles when Nani skips round his marker down the flank, or when Carrick wins the ball back, but you tend not to hear anything when Rooney smacks one in from 40 yards, or hits a 30 yard diagonal ball to a winger, or busts a gut to get back and help out defensively.

If people are still miffed about the contract situation, then let it go. He has even here for 10 years now, and on a hole, has been superb for us. People make mistakes, but he has had the courage to publicity to out and hold his hand up for that mistake. He's sill here, he didn't leave, and as I say, he has expressed his regret for the whole thing. He may be on £250,000 a week or whatever, but as a player - both on the field and also off it, he has been worth it IMO. We must have earned a fortune in Rooney 10 shirts alone.

The only expression you don't know what you've got until its gone comes to mind, and I think it's about time we cut him some slack, and hit behind and supported him. He is a quality player, and as I say, we are a better team with Wayne Rooney in it rather than we are without him.

Although I do not agree with some of the things said in this post Backrow, I have to recognise it as a well-constructed post. You make some interesting points. You've expressed your thoughts quite well.

If he does he'll become the all-time leading scorer in Manchester derbies. Might serve as a small reminder of how much he's done for the club.

Why did you feel it necessary to slip this in?

You see, this is what bugs me, this point of view that we are somehow supposed to be grateful...and not just to Rooney but to ANY modern day player.

Oh THANK YOU so much for demanding so much money that many fans are priced out of going to support their team, THANK YOU for being such an immoral twat bag that your behavior is an embarrassment to the club, THANK YOU for gracing us with your presence you uneducated halfwit, THANK YOU for throwing your toys out of the pram if a player of a similar level earns more, and THANK YOU for doing our dream jobs, living a lifestyle comparable to a Roman emperor and having the bare faced cheek to feel hard done by when supporters dont worship you enough or the papers are an ickle bit mean to poor you.

I think Rooney is a massively important player for Manchester United, having said that he does not become more important than the next. He certainly makes a difference both in defence and attack. I think people are trying to create this impression that Rooney can't play alongside RVP. I think perhaps the only negative is that they might not always be on the same wave length.

And you think the past generation players wouldn't have done the same if the money wasn't at the level it is now? Not a chance, barring a few players who are undoubtably loyal, but that's an incredibly small number, and even from that small number, they are mostly from United and Milan somehow.

That might be due to Rooney's injuries so they've not got a good run of games together. When they did there were positive signs like in the Reading 4-3. Rooney is very unselfish so I'd expect the partnership to develop next season.

They probably would, and I don't begrudge it, my point is expecting us to be grateful to players that would (baring a handful) not have chosen us if we weren't big payers, trophy winners etc, who see the club as an employer and nothing else is a bit much. That is fine, they aren't Utd Supporters, These players are living the dream, and as such should be grateful to the clubs that enable that and the supporters as an extension of that, not the other way round.

Does mata really play in the same position? Rooney's a forward player/striker is he not? We're not playing him as a 10. He's just the deeper striker but feel free to disagree.

Rooney doesn't stay high up the pitch like a second striker though. He plays the number 10 role dropping into midfield and linking the play. The only time I remember him playing as an out and out striker this season was against Norwich when RvP went off and Kagawa went in behind Rooney and in that half an hour or so he bagged a goal and two assists.

When RvP played in behind Hernandez against Norwich away for example (other games over the Xmas run in too) he did that role completely different and did stay almost as high up the pitch as Hernandez. And that's not a criticism just an observation.

100% agreed. Rooney is a fantastic number 9, but mediocre everywhere else, with the occasional great game. Hence why I disagree when people say 'he makes us tick'. He doesn't. Michael Carrick makes United tick. And SAF went out and signed someone (Kagawa) who is a more natural playmaker with a view to using Rooney in his best position.

Obviously, Kagawa is having some teething problems, and we have to find a way to fit Rooney and Van Persie in the team for the moment.
