Regardless of what happened last night, the tipping-point will come if/when United negotiate a new contract with him, almost certainly at reduced wages; Wayne and his agent probably won't tolerate that, knowing that other clubs might offer him more...plus the agent's fee for the signing.

I think last night proved that Rooney is not as indispensable as many of us, and Rooney himself, probably thought. Or as much as he has been in the past.

I thought this idea that Rooney was somehow more important than every other player in the squad died with his little contract rebellion?

He wasn't the only player left out last night. He wasn't even the most unlucky to be. Evans was. Hernandez played no part in either leg. Young and Valencia didn't start either game. Get over it, basically.

I would have started him, but he's not been good enough this season to justify some kind of furore at him being left out, when the players who were picked ahead of him were all good players in good form.

Yeah, this. Don't think there's anything to it really.

No one is indispensable, apart from maybe Carrick.

The problem for Rooney is that, in the big games, we need to be more solid, meaning we can't play him and RVP like we do in the league games, with Carrick and Cleverley behind him. We need a bit more stability in the center, meaning Rooney must shift to the wing, as RVP is probably a better lone-striker. He isn't as effective on the wing as he is in the center, and has little pace, so no one can argue Nani starting over him on the left. Giggs on the right was amazing, and I don't think Rooney could do well on the right anyway, as he is wrong footed for that side for someone like him. So after that, where do you put him in? You can't really, so it wasn't a huge surprise that he was on the bench(Well it was at the time, but thinking back on it, it wasn't).

And Id go more towards fecking idiots thinking anyone gives a pink minty feck what they have to say on twitter. She can talk about it all she wants in private, you dont discuss the clubs affairs in public, if a player did it they would be on the end of the hairdryer so why should their spouses be any different.

Its a semi-public platform for her followers, not a fecking newspaper commentary column.

You obviously give a feck with your panties being twisted into the tightest knot.

You act like shes some kind of extension of Rooney :wenger: Shes not employed by United, why should she be under the same media regime that he is? She is a seperate fecking person and she can do whatever the feck she likes.

Ok then lets get your girlfriend/wife to go on twitter and publicly question your bosses decisions and see how long before at best you are on a disciplinery for gross misconduct and/or fired

No idea what country you live in but if that happened to me Id have a good fecking case for court. You cant fire people because someone else says something on twitter.

You think Id get fired for gross misconduct if my gf said "Cant believe A didnt get that promotion..." ?

Unless she's giving away information that she shouldn't be who gives a shit what Rooney's wife has to say. She's a regular person with an opinion, I don't understand how this is even a topic.

That's ridiculous. Rooney was rubbish in the first leg. Rvp was definitely not poor last night. He held the ball up very well and put welbeck through into space quite often.

The general consensus right after the first leg was that Rooney had been average, but in the following week it morphed into "he was rubbish" for some unknown reason. First and foremost, he was played out of position. He worked well, but his passing was a bit off. It was not much different to the first half against Norwich, and considering how much better the opposition was in Madrid Id say "average" was an apt description.

RVP was also very average tonight.

I dont understand the "Welbeck was on the wing" entirely either. He was the wider player of the two when we counterattacked but he certainly wasnt stationed wide for most of the match. RVP did a poor job of making himself available for most of the match. He seems a bit immune to criticism right now, especially compared to Rooney.

This is the only worry, is Rooney mature enough to deal with being left out? It's a squad game and he needs to be able to recognize that our tactics worked. It doesn't mean he isn't one of our best players and he needs to recognize that. We can't start Rooney every game for fear of pissing him off though, that's for sure.

Its a worry as with every good player being benched, but at the moment we havent seen anything suggesting he cant be benched once in a while. Its pure speculation. He seemed to deal with it a lot better than he would have during his younger days, thats a good sign at least.

With the league pretty much a formality I think Rooney's going to be used sparingly from now on. He might play a part in the FA Cup, but Fergie won't want to risk an injury to Rooney to make sure we get the best fee we can for him in the summer.

Rooney was quite poor for the first match! His first touch is awful at times, at least as bad as Hernandez'. And although he can pin point his 50 yard passes, his 5 yard passes are too unpredictable, and at times can cause breaks against us - nor does he seem to have the pace to catch up with players after commiting a mistake either, like he used to. I first noticed that when he gave the ball away to Kalou and struggled to catch up with him, then Fabio was in the exact same position right after but caught up with Kalou straight away.

Rooney seems to have lost a bit of his hunger. He is still a great player and a matchwinner for sure, but he isn't indespensable. I doubt he would've played like Giggs did yesterday, and quite frankly, I think Giggs would outrun him!

It's actually very hard to decide if you're being serious or not here

I think people reading into Rooney not starting that United will looking to sell him are reading way too much into this. I think Ferguson was looking at the entire match. Up until the yellow card, you couldn't say SAF got the starting XI wrong. Me personally, if I was going to start Giggs (and he played very well) I would have had had Rooney in there instead of Welbeck because he is a much better finisher. Welbeck only gives them more height.

If only!

:(

All the papers tomorrow lead with Rooney is to be sold in the summer. It won't happen.

Suprised to see little Micky O's comments about Rooney's omission from the squad tbf, he isn't exactly condemning but he loves a chance to talk to the press and speculate, perhaps he is planning for his next prospective flyer's to be sent out...

To be fair Fergie did this to himself. There was no need not to start Rooney. He could have slotted him in and even if his performance in Spain wasn't magnificent, he's still one of our best players.

Fergie has been around long enough to know that you don't leave your marquee player out of the biggest match of the season and not create tension in the dressing room.

And the media nonsense has begun. Daily Star claims that we'll sell him for 20m in the summer because he's "stale" and Fergie has worries about his fitness and we'll buy Ronaldo to replace him

Ian McGarry's said that Rooney's camp is unhappy and spoke with United today. He's set to stay then.

When is his contract up? Two more years? By that time he will be closer to the goal scoring record for our club and that might weigh in on his decision to move or not. Plus he knows when anyone reaches 30, they get lesser deals in terms of wages and years.

I honestly don't know how he gets airtime. He knows feck all, but makes out like he's some ITK. The most clueless journalist out there at the moment for me. He lives in a dreamworld where he thinks he knows about the inner sanctum of football clubs.

So Sir Alex has to pick certain players if only to keep the press quiet? That seems like a pretty bad way to manage a football club.

 But there is no tension. Its the fecking media that keep speculating to sell their papers. Like I have said time and time again, the team that was picked justified itself with their performances.

So, wait, Rooney wanted to leave a couple years ago because United wasn't showing ambition by not signing players and now United has signed those players and is showing ambition and now Rooney wants to leave.

Have I got that right?

Funny how every time there's pix of our training sessions, the boss and Wayne are joking about and smiling.

Oh that's just to fool the media. It must be really easy to be a sports journo in the UK. Just make up a whole load of nonsense every second day. It's funny how none of these papers ran any of these stories before last night. Typical reactionary stories.

Yep, a newspaper wouldn't be complete without a 'Fuming Fergie' story. :D

In reading about this supposed SAF V Rooney situation, I've noticed that Wayne's wages have gone up to £300,000 per week (Guardian); Wayne will be a billionaire by April at this rate.

This is the reason I wasn't happy Rooney was left out. The British media will be all over this like flies on shit trying to crank out a new story from one match.

According to the Telegraph, we're selling De Gea and Rooney. Who else will go up for sale before July?

I just love how the media throws random figures for Rooney's wages.

Where would Rooney go, in all seriousness?
Barcelona and Madrid, he wouldn't hack the sun with his freckled fat head and ginger beard.
Paris? He thinks the Eiffel Tower is in Vegas, so that's a no.
Bayern, lots of beer in Munich I suppose but I don't know if Guardiola would fancy him.
City or Chelsea? Nah.
