Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

This whole thing is annoying. The tactics yesterday worked brilliantly and seeing as we have a game against Chelsea at the weekend, if we could afford to drop Rooney then why not. I guess Fergie felt the risk was worth it and it did/was working. He could have also been saving him for the latter stages of the match as a tactical plan. Better he runs full pelt for 30 minutes then spread it out over 90. It was one match, one which we performed very well without him and he'll likely be starting at the weekend.

did saf ever drop ronnie to get the 'balance right' after 2006?

Witty. Would you agree that up until the red card, Rooney's omission wasn't hurting us?

I don't see how your question is in any way applicable to last night.

I'm not 'missing the point' you seem to think your opinion is fact, my opinion is that Rooney isn't our Messi or Ronaldo, my view is we don't have 1 standout player...

I think by the reaction on the CAF and media last night and today, many seem to suggest that Rooney is a stand-out player for us. Its not the argument about "who's the best" or not, but Rooney is more likely to win a game for us than any other player, bar RVP. Its not a fact, but he certainly is a stand-out player. His record goals-wise would back that up.

.

Did you see him stare longingly at the away kit last night? Hes off to Madrid....

That Rooney is a stand out player? Yes, I never disagreed. Your statement was

you missing the point. Rooney is to us what Ronaldo and Messi is to their clubs

That is what you said, not Rooney is a stand out player, they are completely different? Which one are you going to chose?

You keep going back to the point of playing Rooney on the wing. You could argue that we could have played a different formation like a diamond, which would have been disastrous by the way. But Fergie DECIDED to go with wingers in a 4-2-3-1 formation. So when you have decided to go with wingers why not play a specialist winger, someone who has played there all their career instead of someone who hasn't played on the wing that often.

Rooney has been very effective when asked to do a job on the wing to be fair, and Nani didn't do anything last night that we haven't seen Rooney do, so I'm still not convinced that Nani should have been sacrificed ahead of Rooney.

I do wonder if the inclusion of Nani last night had anything to do with him potentially renewing his contract... I don't really think that btw.

I wouldn't care less if he was off, in all honesty. Him being dropped last night came as no surprise to me, the reaction of the media was funny. Talking about how he should be playing after hit MOTM performance vs Norwich  Do they even watch the games? No wonder they still think he's better than his performances suggest.

I think people are reading too much into it. If Fergie had a problem with Rooney, he wouldn't even have brought him on.

It was probably for tactical reasons. A strange one, but it was working up until the red card.

I didn't think he would be leaving before the team was announced last night, but if Fergie is told of Mrs Rooney's public disapproval of his team selection on Twitter last night, he's definitely leaving.

Your serious?

If colleen doesnt wind her gob in it might not be his choice.......its Posh twat and becks all over again......she needs to sit at home and wonder who her hubby is nobbing and keep her gob shut about club affairs.

To be honest he was shit in the first leg. And he does well when he switches positions with the winger but Fergie decided that Welbeck wouldnt be rotating between the middle and the wing because he had a job to do and that was to mark Alonso. So when he is confined to the wing, I would have preferred to have Nani because like I said he has more pace and hence he is more of threat and also he was fresher because he hadn't played in more than a week.

 You aren't going to believe this, but I haven't seen what Coleen has said? I read something mentioned in the papers earlier but there was no quotes etc, merely commenting on the fact she spoke out of place/ turn.

I try to stay as far away from Twatter as possible, can anyone shed any light for me?

 my comment was in support of fergie. he got it right dropping wayne because he is not undroppable like truly class players that we've had like ronnie.

Something along the lines of she cannt believe Wayne isnt starting.....nothing too bad to be honest, but its not her place to comment at all imho.

 I think he is a stand-out player (1) and he is to us what Ronaldo and Messi brings to their team in terms of ability to win games (2)

Surely they're not mutually exclusive so I choose both. It is you who have to choose.

Thanks :) Not to sure how I feel about selling Rooney... he is a very good player for all the he's not Messi/CR bashing... would be a real shame to see him leave IMO, he is valued here.

He wasnt played purely for tactical reasons, and fergie proved correct. It was either RVP or Rooney, and he chose RVP.

Welbeck and Nani both did their jobs remarkably, and Giggs played from another planet.

To get put on the subs bench for 1 game is no hardship, Kagawa didnt play after scoring a hattrick, do you think hes off to barca next year too?

Meh, My oppinion is well known so Ill say no more ;) Especially if it freed up funds for Ronnie to come home :drool:

Correct, but I initially pulled you up for putting your opinion over as fact

you missing the point. Rooney is to us what Ronaldo and Messi is to their clubs

I'm not trying to be pedantic, I don't think we disagree to much, my point was what you said there is wrong, its your opinion and I think MORE will disagree than agree.

Apologies then. I read it like a snide remark on why he never dropped Ronnie to balance a team.

Carry on mate. :)

His potential replacement would soften the blow, I make no excuse for that.

My only concern would be, would you replace him with an AM or striker?

There aren't many players I would be happy with replacing Rooney with...

Falcao, Messi, CR, Ozil or Gotze would personally suffice for me all for different reasons... Falcao, Messi and Ozil are the most unlikely obviously

Media just building up something that's not there IMO. I do think last night was a bit of case of SAF bringing Rooney down a notch, it's also a valid reminder to every player at the club. I can't see Rooney trying anything after last time.

to be honest none of the above, Id spend the money on a center Mid, as we have Kagawa who Im convinced will become one of the best in the world in the hole, RVP, Hernandez, and Welbeck who can all be considered worthy of the first team, plus Henriquez (sp?) Will Keane and a few others fighting for a squad spot.

fair enough... and the selection decision worked for 60 minutes too. I just hope Rooney sees it in the same way as you do, but we know what Colleen was thinking and we know what she'll be telling him tonight. Rooney is important to us and I'd hate to see him leave on account of this.

Good point, what would your CM list be out of interest?

I wouldn't like to see him leave either, and agree about the plan/tactics working for 60 minutes, its just football I suppose. I don't think he is that silly though to be honest, I think he wants to stay here, can't see him going to many other clubs and being as loved as he is here... CR goes to Real Madrid and still got a lot of shit despite his incredible talent, I think IF Rooney were ever to leave, it would be a step down for him.s

Something along the lines of she cannt believe Wayne isnt starting.....nothing too bad to be honest, but its not her place to comment at all imho.

She can comment whatever she wants. Her position is that of WAG of Rooney and her followers on twatter are interested in what she has to say in that role.

Its not like it matters what she says publically anyway. She will have said the same or more to Rooney in private and thats where the real discussion and decision is going to be made as well, not publically on a social media site.

If anything its good that we know what she thinks so it doesnt come as a huge surprise if Rooney suddenly thinks that he wants off to somewhere else.

We would miss Rooney but I dont think he will leave and hes not irreplaceable anyway.

Wrong, she is a non entity with nothing of any use to say and needs to keep her gob shut about team affairs.

Rooney will understandably be disappointed and frustrated not to have started yesterday, to be honest it would be more of a concern if he wasn't!

He has a good football head on him though so I'm sure that just as we are, when he looks at the tactics that were used he will understand why he was left out.

If Fergies man management skills are as good as we think then he probably had a word in Rooneys ear anyway to explain his reasons for being left out. Probably so that we could bring him on as a fresh pair of legs to give Madrid something to think about when they would hopefully still be chasing a goal with half an hour to go.

Agree with some of the others in this thread in the fact that I don't think we have one stand out 'best player' like some other teams do. What we have is a very talented group of players who can be used in different systems depending on the game and circumstances within it.

I love Rooney, but if one game is enough for him wanting out, then I say let's capitalize on him. I even read some knobheads saying he put a transfer request, what a load of bollocks.

He surely is frustrated, but I think he's here to stay.

Oh, and didn't Fergie say Rooney needed a couple of games to get to full fitness? There's you motive.
