Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

He's never worth £60m but he'll improve them tenfold. Think they may challenge for the title next season although not sure how they'll fare juggling the Premier League with European commitments, something they didn't have to deal with this season. They still have a relatively poor squad depth but signings like Salah and Van Dijk will go a long way to improve that, not to mention improve their first team.

City and Pool getting their business done early. I know it's only June but I really hope we get our transfer targets in soon as well. The earlier they're here, the more time they have to settle in and gel with their teammates. We also have more time to look at alternatives if certain moves fail to materialise.

Not a huge fan of van djik. He is error prone and for £60 million , it's a travesty. Bet if we haad done that , whole media would have eaten us alive. Because it's klopp and Liverpool, let is go under the rug. Shame.

But he's better than any of the current Liverpool CBs and will improve their team significantly. Over-priced, yes, if £60m proves to be the actual fee, but then United fans are hardly in a position to criticise over-paying for players.

Yeah neither can spurs after sissoko and soldado

Does the price of a player matter that much if he upgrades the team?

At the end of the day any player that you buy is a risk. Klopp sees VD as player that he needs. He is there to build a team and you have to spend money to do that. Whether he is a good or bad buy will be revealed in the next year or so. With me being a Liverpool supporter I am happy to see us paying money and not haggling over coppers as we previously did. Pick your targets then go out and get them. No excuses then if the arse falls out of it

he has a contract till 2022 right? Southampton see everton selling stones for 50m, everyone in the media is touting VVD as the next "big thing" in the defence side of the game. I hardly find it surprising that 60m is going around as a possible fee.

I find it surprising that some people don't rate VVD. I personally think he's a cracking player who has absolutely everything. In truth, I was fearful Mourinho would be in for him as him and Baily wouldn't be a nice CB partnership to face. The way I see it is if Michael Keane goes for 25 to 30m then 50 to 60m for VVD is about right. If we can get rid of Sakho for £25 to 30m then it would make the deal even better.

Gets in a dig at United when it wasn't needed. Typical WUM.

On Pogba.

Surely they are selling someone to be able to afford this? I mean 60m for a defender and 200k wages per week. Maybe Coutinho is going?

Being able to pay the fee is something in itself, I don't doubt they would be able to do this, I'm more worried about the signal his wages it would send to the squad, and whether it will force them to change their wage structure. He's not good enough to demand a wage so high compared to the rest of the squad imo, if he is on 200k what about Coutinho, Mane, Lallana and so on. Time will tell I guess.

Maaaybe the new PL money will actually up the stakes higher and make most teams able to afford these wages though, and that 200k is the new 100k etc., no idea.

oi- don't be a spoilsport; it's fun criticising Liverpool for United fans. No opportunity to be missed

If he under performs he will.
It's not quite an equivalent signing really.

The schadenfreude surrounding Pogba is linked to his self-styled aggrandisement and apparent attention seeking. It plays well with fans but rubs many up the wrong way. Add his record breaking fee and people are ready for him to fail, or at least not be brilliant.

Even though he hasn't failed he's been unable to live up to the hype that surrounds him. People have enjoyed his underwhelming season in that he's not been one of the league's real stellar performers. Good, sometimes very good but not what it said on the tin. He'll probably kick on and show his worth but it's not quite been immidiate.

That's why VvD won't receive such pelters if he underwhelms.

Depends on what you think under performing is, whenever ManUtd dropped points, fingers were pointed at Pogba, so you think same thing will happen?

Then surely Klopp should after spouting so much nonsense last season?

He would be the most expensive defender in the world. If he doesn't improve their defence or make a mistake fingers will be pointed for sure. He would arrive with huge expectations and the media would jump on the story of 'record signing defender not improving Liverpools defense'.

He's the most expensive defender by June 2017. There's a chance that'll be broken again by August. The market is ballooning.

Obviously he will be under scrutiny but he's not got the profile of Pogba.

Can't believe nobody has asked the real question here - why is he choosing Liverpool over City and Chelsea? :wenger:

He hasn't chosen Liverpool, Chelsea and City are not interested and his agent is spinning

I will say this if the numbers involved shock you but, you are also someone who wants us to sign "PL Proven" players with the new tv deal this is what "PL Proven" will cost. We might possibly see crazy numbers like this again if Lukaku is sold.

Agree with all that. The price is mental but the bottom line is he improves them, a lot.

Add in Salah, Keita and maybe a left back and they're looking very strong. It's why I was so keen on them missing out on CL. Klopp could build something there.

60m is a ridiculous fee for someone who hasn't played since January. He is class though and will be a great signing for them sadly.

Ikr was he a boyhood Liverpool fan?

That would make a little more sense but not much haha. You can earn more/similar money at the other two clubs and have a bigger chance of winning trophies. Also the London factor for Chelsea.

City are definitely interested. The Times reported last week they are willing to pay £50m transfer fee + £180k wages. Chelsea seem to have been put off by the potential price and I don't blame them.
