Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

Like I said in the Liverpool thread, he's apparently really good and we do need a strong CB in the coming season. The prices being quoted are horrendous though, so if we are to buy him for 50-60m we better have a big f****** war chest

I think the benchmark should be closer to the average (obviously slightly above) than the highest point. That has been the case up until now. The chairman should ask for as much as he thinks anyone would pay, or more - in case he doesn't want to sell. The final price is set by both parties though. Poor deals like the one for Stones should just be disregarded. Only the successful ones should be used as justification for future decisions.

so you want chairman to judge a price on someone like Bailly for instance rather then Stones because hes been more of a success ?

Like Lukaku, I like him but the prices involved makes me happy that we are going for other options.

All this spending on centerback really makes me glad about Bailly and Rojo. For around 50m pounds, we got a very good center back pairing.

Agreed. Need them fighting fit and raring to go asap so we can focus on other areas.

Evidencing illegal approaches is obviously tricky. I'll be interested to see what this actually means. Also, if it'll actually have any impact on the transfer

Possibly a move for appeasing the fans when they inevitably do sell him, so they can say it was due to Liverpool's dirty transfer tactics they sold their best player to them yet again, rather than being quite happy to pawn him off and pocket the money.

No, not the chairman. His job is to get as much money as possible. We, as impartial observers and, to an extent, the buying clubs should look at deals like Bailly and see those as good, desirable ones. At the same time deals like the one for Stones and potentially VVD should be judged as overspending.

This does smack of Southampton just being pissed off cos it's Liverpool signing 1 of their players again. When he was reported to be on his way to City on Sunday they had no problem with it.

End of the day we all know that every single club has 1 time or another talked to a player they want to sign before sorting things out with the club.

How often do clubs actually stand firm and refuse to sell the player after an affair like this? If the player has genuinely made his choice to join them, I would imagine Liverpool will eventually agree to pay a little more and the whole thing will be forgotten.

And fwiw, clubs bleating about tapping up does my nut in. It's just another negotiating tactic. Every single player that moves has been tapped up in some shape or form. It's just how it works.

Nothing will happen, Saints are just putting on a strong front to appease their fans. They need to at least make it appear as if they're making a stand. If Liverpool are really offering £60m for this guy the champagne is probably already open in the Southampton boardroom.

Let's hope Southampton stick to their guns then and refuse to sell at any price.

5 years on his contract is a very strong position to be in for the club and don't forget they've been paying his wages for 6 months while he's been recovering from injury.

I'd actually like to see the player come out and set the record straight that he's staying put this season and is grateful to the club for their support.

He doesn't want to stay which might end up being the deciding factor. Southampton always seem to end up selling eventually.

I'm not really convinced by this guy

Liverpool

£60M was a mental price for him anyway. Van Dijk is a £30M defender at best.

Why don't they just buy Southampton. That's a much cheaper option. They've already paid them a good fee for Lallana, Clyne, Mane, Lovren. They'll definitely buy guys like Redmond, Romeu, Tadic in coming seasons. So just cut the crap, spend 100m more and buy a football club.
Also this way Klopp can manage to score a goal against Pool reserves

Is it still a breach of the rules to contact a player before officially notifying the contracted club? I thought this might have been widely accepted in this day and age.

What kind of punishment might Liverpool get if found PL do carry out an investigation and find them guilty?

Death by hanging?

Isn't that one covered by insurance?

This is a two way street: Either the player is deemed not good enough and told to pack his bag or the player has outgrown the club.

I'd sell, but not for peanuts. 60 mil. seems reasonable in today's market. Would be the best option for all involved parties, but only if the money on the table is legit.

Tapping up a player is most likely to result in a fine.
This will get resolved when the transfer is completed.
Remember levy reporting us during the Berbatov saga.

Didn't Southampton try this trick last time with Lallana and Lovren?

They will sell again, as they always do. Just gives them time to find a replacement.

Going to s!aj
Since when does FSG spend £60M and 200K a week on anyone let alone a defender? If they were offered a Suarez return at that price they would still check with the bean counter first.
We got matip on a free and Sakho will unfortunately likely be sold for around 30 too. Inflation eh it's crazy.

I'd pay the fee. He's an absolute beast of a CB who's incredibly good with the ball, too.

He isn't incredible on the ball. He isn't any better than Bailly in that regard.
I think he's a lot better than Bailly on the ball and I think Bailly himself is very good. I've watched so many Soton games this year and he's just so good.

We should give them a call and offer them either Smalling or Jones for 30m. It's the noble thing to do.

Great to see Southampton digging their heels in. They're obviously pissed at how Liverpool have gone about trying to sign him.

Sounds like a PR move, this Soton complaint.
It looks like him picking us seems to have stopped an auction which would have got them some more money. Or\and they're trying to placate the fans after selling to us again.
