So weak, no aggression, no tenacity, and ball watching. I am ashamed to see him playing as our centre back. Quick going to Timber's thread.

It was José Mourinho who had Edward Woodward, the Master of Old Trafford, sign The Iceman. Not one of the finest days for either José or Eddie. Lindelof is a decent fourth option, but if Maguire was fit today why does Victor get the start over Harry?

I think ten Hag will realise quickly because in his role it's important to be decisive when it comes to making decisions and the below is one of many examples where Lindelof has been found wanting. Cleaning up the mistakes of his predecessors should be a priority imo.

Looks like Watkins had a nice shoulder massage there from all of Lindelof's soft hand touches aka 'defending'.

He's the most opposite player to Lisandro I can imagine. He's soft as hell, doesn't compromise in any challenge. His strategy is to try to slow down the play and wait for another team mate to actually do the job.

He's so passive it infuriates me, today his passiveness cost us big time. The third goal I mean what the actual feck ffs, he gave Bailey 40 meters to run without preassure he just kept going back and back and back and when he was actually in the box he didn't even closed on him. Grow some freaking balls challenge your man if he beats you take him down and earn the yellow.

All of Martinez aggressiveness that contagies the rest of the squad goes out the window when this soft fecker plays. I would rather play Maguire, Phil Jones, McTominay as a CB or whoever we have to play but just don't let this weak ass play ever again for us.

I like Vic but I can't understand why he can't attack the defender in situations like the third goal. There's no danger if he loses the challenge. There's one thing to be passive/covering near or in you own box. But in this scenario it's blatan stupid

When Lindelof goes chasing like that, is that something ETH wants or does he want him to stay? There are still four United players between the ball and the goal and it shouldn’t be a high risk.
At 26:10 there was another situation where Martinez pushed equally high and got overplayed, but Casemiro covered and Lindelof cleared it.
Obviously it’s not the intention to be overplayed, as in those two examples, but surely it’s per ETH’s instructions to push high with the CBs? That means these things will happen more or less every game and other players need to cover for that.

Too Passive. Could have prevented goal number 1 and 3 if he was bit more aggressive.

The 1st goal looks silly but tbh Rashford should have closed him down way faster. No idea why he is hesitating like that.

How Watkins is allowed to twist and turn without getting twatted is a big reason of why we struggled early on.

The 3rd goal for me though... it's just not excuseable. You CANNOT allow the attacker to dictate what he wants to do.

He has this habit of backing off all the way until they reach the box, then he just stands there with his arms behind his back hoping for the best. Nobody will ever convince me this is a good style of defending.

9/10 CBs in this league are taking a foul for the team and regrouping way before he approaches the box.

Still hilarious his nickname was the Iceman. Has a man ever had a less suitable nickname, ever?

I think it fits his passive defending style. He keeps it cool, even when the opponent scores a goal.

I used to think it was a positive name, but now I realise it's just because when defending he's frozen stiff like a deer in the headlights.

Even though Lindelof isn't putting in a challenge and moving way out of position, I think Casemiro needs to be plugging the gap that he's left. He's ball watching and isn't aware of the danger until Ramsey has the ball. By that point, it's too late. Eriksen is also marking nobody. He should be on Ramsey. Lindelof is bad, but the midfield isn't doing its job, either.

I can't believe Mourinho signed Lindelof. He's pretty much the exact opposite type of CB I'd expect him to sign.

I don't know for sure, but ETH might prefer a less aggressive CB to play next to Martinez. I don't think Maguire and Martinez complement each other very well. They both defend very aggressively. Varane and Martinez is a much better partnership. Martinez is more aggressive and Varane will sit off and clean up. Varane will contest a 1v1, though.

Lindelof is way too scared to make a tackle. He constantly backs off and tries to buy time to get help from a teammate. He can't defend 1v1 to save his life. Trying to play a high line and expecting him to deal with transitions is basically asking to lose. He doesn't work and will need to be upgraded upon.

I have no idea why he was given that nickname. He's soft as shit.

In fairness, for the third goal he got the player well out of position.
Not his fault the others were ballwatching.

He did what exactly? all he did was just alongside Watkins waiting for him to decide what to do.

He's not a sheep dog. This is exactly the point, it doesn't matter what happened inside the box, he should have made sure it never got to that point.

Stop the ball into the box and it won't happen.

Him and Shaw love to just shadow jockey players, they cant play together....

He didn’t defend well for those two goals, but his team mates’ positions are not optimal either.

First goal. Should it really be a risk for a CB to leave his position when there are five United players between the ball and goal? We want our CBs to push high. Nobody wins every duel. Varane has a success rate of 56% in ground duels and Martinez 62%, which means we will be overplayed, but other players must cover for that. Looking at the photo, this is not a high risk push.

Third goal. Lindelof could/should have attacked but with the risk of being dribbled. With one more defender behind him he should have maybe taken that risk. However the positions of his team mates are far from optimal. Everybody in the same small space. There are no Villa players in this space, instead three Villa players totally unmarked in the box. Can’t say that’s great defending either.

It's Dalot that is completely off position, preparing to attack, in the first goal and he's the one not tracking back in the third goal.

Lindelöfs choice to follow was however wrong at the first goal and he showed no urgency at both the first or third goal to stop the attacker.

Only still here because he can stay fit unlike some.other cbs we have had. Needs to be sold, but we have been saying that for years.

he’s called the ice man because he’s too cool to actually defend.

The reason why our defensive record has been so poor can be attributed to his arrival

This goal has a lot going wrong. The basic thing to do in most situations when you're defending is to have one player attack the man, and another player cover the space behind the aggressive defender.

In this situation, because Lindelof is out of position, Martinez is the last defender. He shouldn't be the one to attack the man, especially given how much distance he had to cover to get there. Shaw is already much closer and should be the one getting tight to Bailey to force the pass out wide or prevent Bailey from turning while Martinez holds his position and occupies the space.

Which makes me sad

I just popped into the thread to see if people are still defending this useless excuse of a pathetic cowardly player.

I definitely hate Lindelof more than you. I have never hated a United player in all the years I've supported them. Lingard was about the closest that I desperately wanted rid of but I didn't hate him.

I actually do hate Lindelof. I'm praying that EtH can now see how terrible this moron is at defending.

I shall leave this thread again.

Sooner we sell the sooner we don’t have to have these mundane conversations anymore

This is all your fault pal. Before you came along we were all having a really pleasant time in this thread. Nothing but sunshine and rainbows

You're like a conductor directing lemmings off a cliff and they're exploding before impact

Piss poor yesterday. That’s one of our biggest problems in the squad, the drop off in quality from Varane and Martinez to our back up options in Lindelof and Maguire is huge. Certainly not a good position to be in especially when Varane is so injury prone.

He’s just so so poor. Would love to move him on and sign that 18 year old from Benfica as his replacement.

Common misconception, it was never "iceman." It has always been "nice-man," because he defends nicely and asks the opposition if it's OK to tackle them before he sticks a leg in.

It’s joes fault for buying him

ETH wants him to be aggressive but unfortunately, he is too weak and too soft. He couldn't even take his man down by making tactical foul, actually I wouldn't be surprised that Lindelof did try to take his man down but it has no effect on Watkins because he's that weak and soft. That clip is the most aggressive Lindelof could ever get.

So contrast when I watched Timber and Lisandro at Ajax under ten Hag, they both have aggression in them and intention to kill forwards. Just like Rio and Vidic. Well, that's what centre back meant to be.

Lindelof's defenders are already saying 'playing with a high line means we will get caught out, so it will happen again' completely deflecting the fact that it doesn't need to happen, if the player in question actually does his job. The mental gymnastics is

In a high line, Martinez does all the ball playing, hard runs, hard covering and play making from the back. What is the point of Lindelof, who can't cover (see 3rd goal) or press high effectively (1st goal)?

Lindelof's recent appearances has been against against Everton, Omonoia and Sheriff, all teams that sat back against us. He then came on for a half for Varane against Chelsea and against Sociedad taken off at half time. He's barely had to do any defending whilst Martinez and Casemiro were arguably our two best players in those games both on and off the ball.

The first game against Villa, where our players are clearly tired and Lindelof fails his task massively on an individual level. Like his 'technique' in 1-vs-1s, anytime you need to count on him to proactively contribute and step up, he's too busy backtracking and hoping someone else does it.

Yet apparently 'he's good at covering, moving the ball and playing in a high line because he's more mobile than Maguire'. Pathetic fraud.

What is the point of a defender who can't tackle nor intercept?
It reminds me of Matic at his worst, who would escort the opponent to our goal.
