As I saw it the reason Maguire wasn't there to back up Lindelof was that he was covering for Shaw that was in pain.
In my book Shaw should have gone off at once and not stayed on as long as he did. If Shaw had switched at once Maguire would have been there to clean up that ball.

Can't understand why Shaw stayed on when he was clearly in pain. Mourinhos ghost taunting him for being weak?

Now Smalling has gone I expect the excuses for Lindelof's weak defending will fade away. A few weeks and we'll be asking whether Jones should be starting ahead of him.
 
We will need an upgrade on him sooner rather than later. He was the best of the bad bunch last season. He has clear weaknesses in the game and no specific strengths for a CB.

However we can do with him for the time we fix other holes in the squad.

I agree, I think Tuanzebe will displace him before the season is out.

Some just made their minds up about Lindelof, so now a player like Tuanzebe who has shown next to nothing at this level is better. He may have the potential to one day be first choice but Lindelof still is the better player and should be ahead in the pecking order.

To be expected after almost every game though. The state of some of our fans is hilarious.
 
Yes I agree with you now. We should get a brute of a CB someone like the Soton CB. How good is he really? Obviously I have not seen him play.
 
Last week yes but a standing jump in the six yard box against a giant of a man, let's keep it bloody real. We didn't created enough chances and one goal in the prem is rarely enough....
 
Average player whose reputation has increased exponentially because people are/were sick of Jones and Smalling, who are sadly, both better than Lindelof.
 
In fairness, Vestegaard is a bloody giant, but this is the Premier league, you need two centre backs dominant in the air.

Agreed, and he should not have been the one to have to take that duel since there were 3 players closer to him the moment before the ball was played.

It wasn't just that moment. He lost aerial duels consistently.
 
He just has no outstanding footballing attributes, much like Luke Shaw (who's at least a great athlete). He's touted ability on the ball is overrated and does not make up for his other fallibilities. He's just ok.

He's okay on the ball and okay defending on the floor. Those are his strengths... And yet he's just okay at them
 
While I have no issue with people criticizing Lindelof's flaws generally, the reality is that most players would struggle for their goal. He was beaten from a standing start by a giant CB. It's not like it was an outrageous mistake.

Take a step backwards before jumping. A defender who has any awareness of his surroundings doesn't sell himself short in the air twice in two weeks. Had he just used his body against Vestergard he would've denied him a free header, which probably would've meant the header would've had less control and might not have gone in.

The aerial ball is kryptonite to Lindelof. He'll be targeted all season long as a response. The likes of Ashley Barnes will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing him.
 
Cost us another goal. Think tuanzebe deserves a chance now.
 
Terrible defending for the goal. Same header mistake of the last game too, but at least the previous one had another glaring mistake from Maguire. This time it's all his own problem.
 
Lost another important header and it cost us a goal. Has been a bit overrated here since his okay form last season but i dont really see a world class CB in him.

Also started the game of really bad. Got better after James his goal
 
Thought he was better in the air today actually, too weak too often in general play though. That Danish centre half is massive so it’s hard to win a header against him but he did misread the flight of the ball a bit and got set in a position where it went over his head.
 
I thought he absolutely bossed it? Excellent reading of the game, the only fault was of course for the goal, headering is definitely the biggest flaw in his game which is obviously bad for a defender...
 
Look at the replay again. Rashford just walked away when marking Vestergaard.

He was fine.
 
Soft as shite and mythical ball playing is yet to show it self.

If Smalling did those two ball loses that almost led to goals he'd be ripped apart.
