Same with Evra.

Both their quality was evident. Lindelof on the other hand is just bad at being a CB.

No it wasn't. Evra was hooked at half time on his debut, that's how bad it was. The difference is the next game he was put straight in the starting 11 vs Liverpool. That's how you build up a player's confidence.

Tuanzebe is not English  though I agree what you said. He kept Alexis Sanchez fighting for the Golden Boot in his pocket on his official debut. I can't think of one single bad performance from him.

What the hell? Of course he’s English. The lad grew up in Rochdale. He’s been living in England since age 2 and has represented England at all junior levels.

I certainly don’t rate Lindelof, and don’t think he will make it here, but he’s just played in the World Cup, so to suggest there is not a shred of evidence to say that Lindelof is a better bet that Tuanzebe is ludicrous.

Not for England he didn’t. It’s far from ludicrous. What IS ludicrous is comparing them solely based on their international fortunes when both play for the same club, in the same position too. An easier metric would be judging how they have played for United, in which Tuanzebe has been superior for my money. Why on earth would Lindelöf win because he gets picked for a team that Tuanzebe isn’t eligible to be picked for?

His form is atrocious currently, he looks a shadow of the player we thought we signed.

He's another one who cannot hit any form/consistency under Jose.

He was great for Benfica, great for Sweden, cant kick a ball for us.

Bailly/Rashford/Sanchez/Martial could fall under the same bracket.

I honestly don't know what happens to our players when they step on the pitch under Jose. We all know without confidence, its a struggle. He looks lost currently and I feel for him

plenty of players have looked poor in a very small sample size. How many starts has he actually had for united? 10? I haven't a clue. Vidic and Evra are obvious examples that looked poor over that kind of sample size and turned out to be legenardary.. we dont even need him to turn out legendary
By the end of their first seasons here both Evra and Vidic became starters. Bare in mind they both signed in January! You can't begin to compare them with Lindelof who's shown absolutely nothing extraordinary so far.

Yes. Had Tuanzebe and TFM not been on the cusp of the first team, then people wouldn't have had such a problem with a similar "potential" player, who did not clearly have MORE potential, being not just signed but given opportunities that Axel and TFM were not given. TFM was excellent under LVG, and Tuanzebe was far better than Lindelof in the game they played together v Swansea, so the only possible reason the Swede was preferred subsequently was his fee.

"Potential" players should not be Swedish players signed for 35 million from Benfica, they should be home grown, or British players signed cheaply (ish) from Fulham or Blackburn. Lindelof should have been bought as first choice right now, or not at all.

While I appreciate you agreeing with my point here, I’m not sure it translates as generally as the bolder part suggests.

I mean, what about signing potential for £12.24m from Sporting Lisbon? We know how that worked out, and I don’t think we should close the door on huge talent from the continent. That said, Lindelöf is clearly not in that category.

Doesn’t matter who he played for - are Zlatan’s international achievements dismissed also?

If you read my posts, I am no fan of Lindelof - but you suggest there is no evidence to suggest he’s a better bet than Tuanzebe - and you dismiss being a starter at the World Cup. Goodness knows what you mean in your last sentence?

I also have not suggested a ‘winner’ out of the two of them, but there is a good argument for either, you should consider more than one perspective and just because you don’t agree with something, its not ludicrous.

I hold out more hope for Lindelof than I do Bailly or Rojo. It comes across that he’s just massively struggling with confidence and concentration.

If he can address both these issues he will be a lot more reliable than the other two who I think have more limited potential.

Zlatan’s international achievements (which are far greater than Lindelof’s) would be dismissed if he were useless for his club. Which Lindelöf is. In which case, being picked for your country is not a testament to your ability, it speaks poorly of your national team. If Smalling and Jones were Swedish, Lindelöf would not play for Sweden, and those two can barely get a look in for England.

My last sentence is simply questioning the merit of using the fact that Lindelöf plays for Sweden to assess him against Tuanzebe, who is obviously not eligible to play for Sweden!

And it wasn’t me who began saying the other’s opinion was ludicrous. I understand your opinion, but I don’t agree that it’s valid. Smalling is better than Lindelöf, yet Lindelöf is picked for his country. Fortunately, they both play in the same position at the same club, so we are able to see that Smalling is better, without having to check which one was called up for their country’s last match. This is the same logic I am using for Tuanzebe. Much of his appearances for us have been in friendlies, admittedly, but he’s still been more impressive than Lindelöf for me, who was an absolute shambles during last summer’s pre-season. To his credit, he did play well in hisnkne pre-season game this year.

...Tuanzebe was far better than Lindelof in the game they played together v Swansea...

This one match performance soon reaches epic heights. Both were decent inthat match, but not fantastic. I think what we witness is the power of absence. Players who dont play are always very popular. We have seen it many times.

But Mourinho have seen more than the match against Swansea, he also saw him train every day and somehow he made the decision that he wasn’t good enough or at least not ready. Right or wrong, but he made that decision based on more than the Swansea match and when he “pocketed Sanchez” some years ago.

With the same weird logic, what does that say about Lindelof and Tuanzebe? Lindelof is picked to play in United while Tuanzebe isn’t.

Funny thing about Lindelof is that if he does not make a mistake; it is highlighted as a good performance by some.

I've seen him perform without making any mistakes under opposition that dont put him under pressure - but I've yet to see him be put under such attacking play and consistently coming out on top.

To be fair to him, he and other new comers to the prem would really benefit from playing alongside a CB partner who is an established starter and is capable of playing at the required level for team. He’s doesnt have and hasn’t had that. If he was played alongside Smalling for 5 games on the bounce I’m sure we’d see a difference in him. Same with Bailly.

Too many changes are affecting the back line, VL included.

apparently lindelof has had 27 starts for united, which is way more than i thought, seems ridiculous that he has started 1/2 our games since signing.

With that in mind we have seen a lot of him, so I am probably way off in my original post

With the same weird logic, what does that say about Lindelof and Tuanzebe? Lindelof is picked to play in United while Tuanzebe isn’t.

With a more youth-friendly manager than Mourinho (as in promoting academy players himself), that probably wouldn't have been the case, in fact whoever it would be probably wouldn't have bought Lindelof at all. Sir Alex didn't even buy COMPETITION for Butt and the Nevilles, who were not more talented either skill-wise or athletically than Tuanzebe and TFM (weirdly he did for Scholes and tried to for Beckham, both of whom are more talented (skill-wise and overall, not physically) than them unless one happens to turn into the new Rio!)

Applying the same logic, Jedinak is picked at CB over Tuanzebe! Is HE a better CB?! Surely not! (Of course Bruce hasn't had the same success as Mourinho, but still...)

In other fields, there are exceptionally talented singer/songwriter/musicians who struggle to get pub gigs, while Louis freaking Tomlinson, who would have a good chance of being the worst singer at my local karaoke, did world stadium tours.

Yep, continued to get held off by their strikers like he was 12.

He did well today. Smalling is his best partner

Defended well, I thought. Good today.

He really needs to hit the gym and add some upper body strength though.

He was decent, but it will be a matter of time until he's exposed again. Just don't trust him at all.

I thought he was decent today, miles better than Brighton, good positioning and covered well. Needs to rebuild his confidence. Obviously most players would look better with Fellaini and MAtic screening infront of them but still he played well I thought.

He was solid today. Some of you just refuse to see that because he is your favourite player to pick on.

He was fine, but he had very little defending to actually do. Had he had to do some it might have been a different story.

Thought he was better today, though needs to start lifting with Lukaku I reckon or the more physical players in the league will always cause him problems.

I think he suits a back 3 far more than a back 2.

He was decent today. He seems a player that uses his technical ability, game reading and body movement to defend rather than brute force, which makes it a bit difficult for him in the PL unfortunately. There always going to the Burnleys and the Stokes of the world who will foul you all day long.

I still don't get what he's supposed to be good at. He's not good at heading the ball, loses his man, loses most of his duels, is slow.

Still think the best of Lindelof will be seen playing on the right of a back 3.

Vidic was rather skinny by CB standards but was totally aggressive and committed to winning everything. Lindelof could do with some gym work but a more aggressive mentality would help. At some point as a CB you are going to have to win physical duels when isolated, without that ability I struggle to see him making it in the PL long term.

He isn't slow, is comfortable on the ball and reads the game generally well. So many times he was in the right position to head the ball out today.

The Swedes career here has been a major disappointment to me.

What irritates me the most is that he looses loads of duels and is weak and fragile. When you play in the PL you can’t have these weaknesses. The main reason why we looked better defensively today was Fellaini guarding, protecting and winning most aerial duels. Fellaini is such an underrated player on these forums.

He plays well against all the shit teams. Watford away will be a huge test for him.

Was good today, and Fellaini protected his weaknesses well. Hopefully, he can be a part of 3-4 clean sheets over the next few weeks and gain confidence. Still looks shorn of it.

His pass to Lukaku was very nice, this is exactly what I want more from CB.

Will never make it. Simply zero presence in the air. Not gifted enough for Manchester United.

Also, as much as people harangue Lukaku for his touch, this guy has the first touch of a rapist. Whenever he pushes it, he has to burst into a mini sprint to recover his stance.
