Lets be honest with ourselves, Lindelof is not the answer. It's trendy and more understandable to shit on the likes of Smalling and Jones but Lindelof is no better than them. Sure he's younger and has more scope for improvement but I don't ever see him being good enough.

We were sold a dream that he was a ball playing defender that would lead us out from the back. He's just ok on the ball, he's had a few stand out moments but there's also times when he's deferred to Smalling.

My main problem with him is that he's a CB that always gives his marker a chance. He's the least imposing centre back in the top 6. As a striker, you go into a match with him thinking you have a chance. He's not particularly fast and is quiet weak for a PL defender which immediately puts him at a disadvantage. His reading of the play and calmness makes up for some of his flaws but its not enough. He'll probably be a very good CB in the Bundesliga but he's definitely not good enough to be more than a squad option here.

Go around the PL or Europe and you'll see the best young CB's are aggressive and imposing even if they are ball playing in nature. De ligt, Sule, Giminez, Joe Gomez, Skriniar, Eder Militao. As a striker you know you're in for a physical game coming up against any of those.
 
Thread full with praise, guy has a bad game and suddenly it's "he's not the answer", "not good enough for United" etc. Same old song in most player threads :lol:

If Lindelof has a good game against Barcelona it'll suddenly be back to "we just need to get a partner to Lindelof" again. Christ.
 
It's very easy to say this about a lot of players in our team, but I really think he'll benefit with a better player next to him.

He’s not Good enough.

Yes he has improved and yes he has done a better job this season than last but let’s be honest he was that bad last year that going from terrible to just okay shouldn’t be commended.

I don’t rate Bailly much but he’s a million miles better than that a defender that shits himself every time the ball is in the air or a player runs at him.
 
Did I miss something? I felt that the whole defence did well for the most part. You're hardly going to go through 95 mins without conceding chances against a team like Barca.
 
Thought he was fine, a few misplaced passes but brought the ball out of defence nicely many times. A solid 7/10.

No.. Fred,Mctomminay and Smalling was excellent so they naturally covered for him.

He’s shit and the fact so many rate him on here is symbolic of how far united have fell in the last 5 years.

Lindelöf is much more composed and reliable than Bailly. There aren’t much quality CBs to sign anyway, while I think we should’ve kept Blind.
 
Solid game, no mistakes and relatively calm under pressure.

Ridiculous post. Looked far from shitting himself. And please explain where you have seen Bailly perform better than this, lately?
 
Very good game from Lindelof, as well as the defence in general. His partnership with Smalling is solid. The fact that we only allowed 6 shots from Barcelona all game is fantastic. Just wish we could get more done in the attacking end.

I disagree but to each their own I guess. We had some nervy moments yes but it wasn't the defence that lost us the game today.
 
I think he's way overrated on the ball. He flat out refused to pass between the lines today.. lost count of the amount of times McT was screaming for the pass and Lindelof just knocked it sideways instead.

He’s been good on the ball when not being shoved into the RCB position.
 
Shaw's mistake mainly for the goal, but Lindelof got befuddled by Messi's run too. Had another nervous moment too. Obviously not as good as Smalling but was more comfortable at the back than Shaw today. Some sloppy play at times on the ball though which we dont expect from him
 
Oh god. Ball playing CB's are the best. They can get away with so many weird decisions. Not to say he made many mistakes overall, he just made too many for the highest level and that is what we demand. He is not capable of passing to the level we demand from players expected to have that in their game. If he doesn't do the things we expect him to do, and he doesn't do basic defending, what is he in there for...

Messi and Suarez can destroy ramos varane and koulibaly too with their runs. We conceded because of our poor attitude at the start of the game of defending and sitting back and countering. Had we played like that what we played after the goal this was a 0-0 game.

Anyone who still calls him a ball playing CB must be blind. He can be just as timid as Smalling on the ball sometimes, the only difference is he looks less awkward.
 
Suarez was toying with him, also he really needs to grow a pair when on the ball considering he plays with Smalling. Disappointed.
 
He was good, but he is not a ball.playing CB at all. Looks nervous when pressed, rarely passes between the lines to CMs even with space available, and at times just dawdles on the ball too long.
 
Solid performance from him today. Did not really put a foot wrong together with Smalling.
 
He's a second string CB. Laidback, okayish, not doing the dirt. Just doesn't want to get dirty and doing something wrong so he just ends up not doing much at all. He's just there, and not protecting our goal very well for that matter. I never rated him as anything special and after two seasons I don't see anything special in him. He's not awful, he's just not that special at anything. I said it when we bought him and I don't care if people call me crazy: We could've easily invested in Tuanzebe instead of buying him. I think Axel's potential is higher. What's Lindelof good at? And don't say his passing.

Agreed completely. This guy just doesn't have the personality to be a top defender. He looks like a little kid lost in the shopping center when he's on the pitch. We thought it was about confidence last year as he was trying to settling in but it's about his personality/mentality imo. Certainly it's not a temporary issue for him. He's nothing special both at defending and building from the back either.

How people can call his performance a good one is beyond me. He was so passive in his defending and looked like he'd cost a goal every time he had to deal with the Barca attackers.

Believing in a player is one thing (and i appreciate that), kidding yourself is another. We can believe in Rashford. You can clearly see the talent is there. We can believe in Fred. There's also a player in there. Lindelöf? Not so sure about that one. He is an average defender and didn't show anything promising other than his purple patch. That's the hard reality people need to face. If he was a good ball playing defender -which we lack & need for a long time- and average defensively that'd be one thing. But he's so average at all aspects of a modern defender. He wouldn't start at any top club. Like our other defenders -bar Smalling maybe- unfortunately.
 
He’s coming along and learning all the time. He’ll continue to make mistakes here and there, for a bit, but I think he’ll become a good player for us.
 
Very good today. Not as good as Smalling, but overall very good. I think we got really good defenders and with better management and an improved attack plus a really good right back the job should be easier.

That's plain ridiculous. He was our best defender by far (actually playing on his stronger side) tonight, the only one who could actually bring the ball out from defence. Smalling was his usual win everything in the air but couldn't make a pass to save his life.

We badly need someone who can play on the left of central defence so Lindelof can play on his stronger side.
 
His passing out from the back is a myth. Is it any better than Smallings? He was at RCB and had lots of chances to do so.
 
Lindelof should be our long term 3rd CB.

For now he can cover the gaps.

Hopefully we can buy a proper LCB first and have our million RCB covering that role for a season until we balance that side out the following transfer window.

Step by step.

Miss my boy Blind's passing though.

Aye, I think a lot of people equate looking comfortable on the ball to mean he's ball playing.

Yeah he can knock a decent pass every now and then... but so can Chris Smalling.
