He is just not suited to this league. He can become a world beater anywhere else though.

No, he cannot. He doesn't suss out danger very well, can't head the ball, is not good in one on one situations, doesn't have much pace, is not a good reader of the game, his ball skills are ordinary - he looks the very definition of a mediocre defensive player.

I had a lot of faith in that guy and was frustrated with LVG for not playing him but in the end his exit was more than justified. The man doesn't even look the part at Everton! I agree with you over Lindelof. He doesn't belong in this league and would struggle even at a club like Wolves.

So did i - that must win game in the CL against Wolfsberg at home summed it all up for me. I remember him shrugging his shoulders and passing the ball backwards in the 70 or 80th min at 0-0. This is all Lindelof did on Monday and he's supposed to be a ball playing CB? Thats why I know what we're dealing with when it comes to him.

Even Jose knows he made a mistake with him.

He's just not good enough. Arsenal had flops like Senderos (who had a good international career) and Gabriel Paulista who showed way more initial promise than Lindelof ever has. The guy is just not good enough at this level.
plenty of players have looked poor in a very small sample size. How many starts has he actually had for united? 10? I haven't a clue. Vidic and Evra are obvious examples that looked poor over that kind of sample size and turned out to be legenardary.. we dont even need him to turn out legendary

I agree somewhat, but the issue with Lindelof is that he has done absolutely nothing to suggest he can be a player at this level, there is not one attribute of his that stands out.

Bailly for example is making mistakes left right and centre, but you can see he has some grit and determination about him, you can see he can make a great tackle etc. With Bailly he needs to improve his decision making and stop being so rash, but you can see how he can progress. With Lindelof, he would need to improve everything to become a competent player - so I can’t see how he can ever make it at Utd.

Yeah agree. I guess he has done one thing - convinced our scouts he was worth the money. That holds weight but obviously doesn't last forever. I would be hesitant to write him off

When a player looks as smug as Lindelöf did when signing for us, it's a bad sign.

He's had 27 starts for us across all competitions

I would expect to see way more then what we have in 27 starts.

He's only ever come on as a sub 5 times for us... so when he plays he almost always starts.

Being a competent defender would help!

Don't know why everyone is getting on this kids back when Smalling and Jones have been at the club for as long as they have. Feel like he's only played a handful of games, think there's a lot of knee-jerking here right now.

Again, he's made 27 starts for us... that's way more then a handful.

Also, Smalling and Jones have - at times - shown signs of being good defenders. Lindelof has not.

I'm sorry but he's just not good enough and doesnt have the mentality to play for a top club.

Why on earth we shipped out TFM is beyond me. I'm sure he would've been a much better choice to have that lindeloff. If Leicester want 65 million for Macguire, we should offer them 65 million + Lindeloff.

Im on of the opinion that his game time being given to Tuanzebe last season would have put us in a much better position

One thing that stands out for me with Lindelof is how easily he gets bullied physically, while some might find it an easy and a cheap argument, neither Tuanzebe nor TFM would have been so hopeless in coping to that regard. Anyone remember TFM handling of Deeney? Lindelof looks like he is gonna cry every time he needs to battle it out with an attacker.

He is soft, no two ways about it. The lack of fight in him might be tolerable if he was excellent at other things like being in the right place, reading passes and making interceptions etc but he is average at other things so it kind of piles on to mediocrity.

when we first signed lindelof. i though he was going to be a taller, and pacey version of blind, the cultured cb to go with baileys physical presence, turns out blind is twice the player he is, madness we have got rid of blind when clear is day the guy isnt up to it and never will be.

I have a problem with the fact that he appears to be very weak mentally. People keep talking about his lack of confidence, club being too big for him etc...if that is the case then Lindelof seems to be more suited to a team who are either completely dominant and win everything at a canter, or else an underdog with no pressure. If everything was all rosy and the team were confident and winning, then maybe he would be able to display his talents, but we don't have space for fair weather players just now.

I agree, as it stands he should be shipped off together with Jones and Rojo as soon as January. And it's not like someone would blink an eye over it. Sell those 3, bring one solid CB in January and bring Tuanzebe back. 2 weeks ago I felt our CBs can do better, I was wrong in having any sort of faith in this lot. With Smalling and Bailly I still feel they might turn out to be of some use, but I won't hold any breath.

This is Lindelof's thread, if you wanna see how Smalling and Jones are talked about, check their respective threads, it ain't pretty.

He is just so placid. People talk about his ability on the ball as well but he is hardly David Luiz in that aspect either.

Yes, he most cerrainly have. Don’t be stupid.

Signs of being a good defender for us? Nah, he really hasn't.

And as i'm clearly not the only one that thinks so - and indeed its a fairly widely held opinion - then it's not "stupid"... you may disagree of course, and that's fine, but it's ignorant to suggest that such an opinion is "stupid".

Did Vidic have a start comparable to Lindelof?

Vidic looked like he needed time to settle but you could tell there was a player there. He had a match against Arsenal in his first couple of months where he looked fantastic and gave signs of things to come.

Evra's first game was famous for being appalling, he was a nervous wreck. Most games Lindelof has played for us have been more comparable to that.

I struggle to see what Mourinho can see in Lindelof but he can't see them in Blind.

Mourinho must be thinking Blind is too weak & too slow as a centre back even though he's very good with his distribution. But isn't that's exactly how we describe Lindelof? Lindelof signing is just doesn't make any sense to me. Difference is Blind is so much more intelligent and knows how to use his asset and hide his weakness from strikers. I hope he can improve but I have big doubt, any footballer can improve their physical & technical attribute, but being intelligent is different story.

We’ll harsh choice of words maybe, sorry about that.

My point, though, is that I’ve seen games with Lindelöf for United and Sweden where he actually and very evidently played as a good defender. That is certainly signs. Signs of good reading of the game, signs of good positional play, games were he’s won duels against stronger players, where he has not been beaten for speed by very fast attackers, games were he has been good in the air, games were he has not lost possesion, gone past players and played through the lines well. I saw it with my own eyes.

You may not have seen them, but plenty have.

Wether lots of other posters have not seen these games or failed to notice these signs, does not prove they were not there.
Wether you have seen other signs that he’ll never be good enough, is quite another thing.

This is why I don't think he should be written off.

However, I don't see his form improving in his current frame of mind. A loan elsewhere might be good for everyone, although we also lack back up options that can stay fit, so a loan move can only happen if we sign a center back in January.

There is no justification for him playing ahead of Tuanzebe, and this is a large part of the problem English talent face. Both are young, both supposedly have potential that Jose has publicly spoken of. Tuanzebe is our on loan, and has to take the longer route towards potentially fulfilling his potential here. Yet there isn’t a shred of evidence to suggest he is an inferior player to Lindelöf. If he were given a couple of years in and around the first team, I am almost certain he’d have done better than Lindelöf, who is a total fraud.

Tuanzebe is not English  though I agree what you said. He kept Alexis Sanchez fighting for the Golden Boot in his pocket on his official debut. I can't think of one single bad performance from him.

I certainly don’t rate Lindelof, and don’t think he will make it here, but he’s just played in the World Cup, so to suggest there is not a shred of evidence to say that Lindelof is a better bet that Tuanzebe is ludicrous.

This is my concern also. He seems to just hit the ground so easy or get barged off the ball. He isn't the quickest either. In all honesty he just looks way out of depth. He's had enough game time to prove himself.

Strange then how he’s played for England at U19,U20 and U21 level.

That’s just the plain obvious truth.

He probably has the physical basis for a good player but I agree he is unlikely to become a top class CB. Really top class defenders need to be BOTH mentally as well as physicality tough. Players seem to be signed based on past performances, often in different leagues.
I do wonder how deeply a players MENTAL characteristics are investigated. Clubs are in so much of a rush to sign a player, this attribute might not be looked into sufficiently.
Compare this with a job interview where behavioural characteristics are so important.

Did you become a Utd fan in the last few years or something?

No, Vidic was pretty good after just 2-3 months.

Same with Evra.

Both their quality was evident. Lindelof on the other hand is just bad at being a CB.
