VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Oliver neglecting the challenge for Mateta is criminal. How on earth does he need a VAR to know that was a dangerous play by the keeper on Mateta?

Michael Oliver should not be a referee.

I know still photos are deceiving, but it looks he has a clear view of that awful challenge on Mateta and he doesn't even issue a stoppage in play.

Incompetent is a kind word to describe him.

Yes it's a criminal oversight and he's rightly dropped this weekend.

Aye, and tt's not just incompetent, it's dangerous.

More so then any dodgy penalty award or whatever, something like that should absolutely get you dropped from ref duty.

Must be gutted to miss United-Arsenal, he had the game marked on his calendar for a guaranteed red card.

Oliver really has no business being a ref at the top level. And that insane Millwall keeper should be banned for about 20 games. Lunatic.

I’m exaggerating. But a tackle like this should come with more than the usual three game ban. It was incredibly dangerous.
I agree but 20 games is excessive. I think 5-10 is fair given the danger to the opponent. 20 would be fair if they meant to hurt them but don't think they did, just think they had a very stupid moment.

The 20 games were influenced by the clubs reaction. The way they are trying everything possible to portray the keeper as the victim gets me really mad.

Agree with this. It's one of the most reckless, dangerous and inconsiderate things I've ever seen on a football pitch. To quote a great man...

(but like, he really could've)

Yeah don't even need to view that one, it's legendary (and has been brought up a lot since last week's challenge). It's the only one that really comes close, I think.
I watched that game live on TV, it kinda stands out as one of the most 'memorable' things I've seen in football

Some very poor reffing tonight again. Mcallister blocking donnarumma there is just a standard yellow

Should VAR intervene for that? Ref saw it and deemed it no foul, was it a “clear and obvious error” on his part? Don’t think this is what VAR was invented for but not sure how it’s currently being applied in Europe.

They wouldn’t have intervened either if he gave the red card though, which also would’ve been correct imo.

It’s riding the line between shoulder barge and shove. Could easily have gone the other way, but I think they’d be within their rights to go with the on field decision.

But once they’ve made the point to review it, there’s not really an excuse. Could’ve gone either way, and it went Liverpool’s.

20 games? What?
I would not be against the Millwall keeper being banned until the end of the season tbh.

He booted someone in their head. We have seen with Stephen Hunt on Petr Cech how dangerous that is and the Mateta incident falls into the same category.

Where’s the ambiguity? He barges into him from behind. There’s no attempt to play the ball. It’s a textbook error.

There’s nothing really in the rules that says you’re allowed to shoulder barge somebody anyway but generally two people have to be competing for the ball for that to even be considered. You can’t just barge into somebody’s back just because you use your shoulder to do it.

I think he should've intervened. He very clearly pushes him in the back. If this happens later in the game he definitely gives this I think.

Just the pressure of the occassion and minute I think.

Ehm…, yes? The ref saw a shoulder to shoulder challenge, you’d assume, otherwise he would’ve called a foul. And it absolutely wasn’t that. The only mistake was VAR not following through.

These decisions are as wearing as our performances. Hate this season.

Shoving Bradley Barcola over from behind while he's through on goal in a Champions League knockout game = red card:

Fair enough yeah.

“Pressure of the moment” could be true for the ref’s initial decision but indeed once they go to a VAR check I then wonder why they didn’t go through with overturning it.

Not hard to know you're a Liverpool fan
That is a clear red card. If you're saying the ref saw it then he got it wrong. Absolute madness that that was not a red.

Found myself reading those same last 3 words a lot recently

I think that's silly. If he did so with malicious intent, yeah, but he didn't. Hence why I think a 5-10 game ban is fair.

You're contradicting yourself. If you think that it was a foul and a red card then the ref made an obvious mistake on the pitch and therefor VAR should have intervened.

I simply think that the ref and VAR didn't have the balls to make the correct call. If it were just a penalty call and not a red either party might have given it.

Michael Oliver-like decision making.

Yeah it was a bit of a bottle job.
