VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

The ref knew it wasn't a pen. He looked incredibly sheepish when he eventually awarded it. It's simply a case of him not having the courage of his convictions.
Because he had no conviction whatsoever. I guess having a "senior" (it irks me that Oliver is considered as some sort of standard in this league) ref telling him to go to the monitor and showing him the footage in a very bias way swayed him, but it seemed quite clear from his demeanour he didn't believe it was a pen.

Dermot is right, the ref has to be strong enough to look at it and say no let's carry on, I'd love to hear the audio for Oliver to convince him.

Yeah, but when that VAR ref is your buddy and he might take you to another country to be paid as an assistant referee on an all expenses paid trip, then surely you might be thinking.

"If I don't do what he says, he might not pick me next time Man City offer him a holiday"

Ultimately impacted on a manager getting sacked. That should never be the case.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen so many pundits, former refs etc all agree so much on a call against United. It's incredible that the VAR intervened on that one, but it won't matter as they will continue to officiate matches.

Why hasn't the PGMOL come out and made a statement yet? Or they just going to cower as usual and move on, disregarding the impact this has.

Dale Johnson from ESPN in line too - incorrect VAR intervention.

Yay! Unanimous support, like the Bruno red, that VAR and the officials got it wrong from the experts. That must be a real comfort to...checks notes..unemployed ETH and our league position.

Will the FA release the audio? You can see in Cootes face that he really didn't believe it was a pen as he was giving it.

Well that’s a shock.

What happens now is going to be interesting. Officials usually get demoted for a week but that’s never happened when they make an error against United. Will be interesting to see if Oliver is in any sort of trouble over this.

On the plus side surely Oliver now feels the microscope on him when officiating United matches?
I used to think when United got Oliver that maybe this time he wouldn't feck the team over not to make his bias so obvious. He can't help himself though and always finds a way to show his true colours.

Do you know how wrong a decision has to be to have this clown say it's wrong?

Scandalous.

Hopefully this was egregious enough to 'out' Michael Oliver.
You would hope so, though I suspect it's going to be lost in the noise over ETH today.

I don't like that sacking happened today. It just take away the light from this.

Club needs to show some courage and make some kind of statement. It is amazing how club is letting this go. Bizarre. Week after week. Season after season. Demand investigations. Demand that every tape from our games are released with sound and picture. Demand that we don't need to have certain referees. Ban media. Club leadership need to take control.

I do think the conversation around 'the VAR process' and 'clear and obvious mistakes' etc is important to the wider point however on this particular incident its irrelevant for me.

It's not a penalty in any way shape or form. The idea that a referee of any description, in any position, at any level would think that it should be is outrageous and it's that which needs investigating first and foremost. Oliver will have absolutely no explanation for that referral - it's a disgrace and any fallout from this should be primarily at his door, not the onfield ref. That guy is a fckin bare faced cheat

Howard web has an answer for everything and will always cover for the refs. He said as much in the podcast with Neville something along the lines of they don’t want to let their mates down. Nothing will change.

I don't care, the logical conclusion has to be that Oliver is corrupt/extremely biased against us.

I blame the club for always letting this shit go. They need to grow a pair of balls and fecking call this shit out. Tired of the meekness.

If this happened to another club, you bet they would have issued apologies already!

What do you propose they do? What we are basically saying here is that we think Oliver is corrupt or bias against us. If we asked for him never to referee our matches again we would be formalising that allegation. I’m pretty sure that would be met with sanctions.

I hear a lot of people complaining about this, but how does anyone know that MU haven’t privately complained to PGMOL and made their feelings clear? Perhaps they want to act with a bit more class than some other clubs and feel like they stand a better chance of a positive outcome if they’re not publicly screaming about their treatment.

This is interesting...DeLigt actually got the ball before contact with the player. They slowed it down and saw it in a replay.

If he's 'corrupt' then they'd better have absolute proof, otherwise that is a very expensive losing lawsuit, biased is hard to prove, for every wrong decision he's made for/against us you can bet there are examples, for most if not all, other clubs, he's basically just a shit referee who thinks he's the best

I wonder does ETH regret not doing a Conte now that he's been sacked. I'm sure he knew it was on the cards after the loss yesterday. Really think he should have let rip on Oliver and VAR.

Still seething from yesterday’s decision. Have had to restrain myself from wishing horrible things on that cnut Oliver.

What bothers me is how little noise we’ve heard since yesterday about potential consequences. Oliver should be suspended for some games at least after that incident, especially after the impact of the loss on Ten Haag’s job. A bad refereeing decision may be the difference between someone keeping their job or not, a club getting relegated or not, or qualifying for Europe.

That is why I hate how protected referees are. Someone like Ten Haag should have gone out fighting yesterday. Call Oliver incompetent on TV and pin that loss on him. Put a target on his back and bring his incompetence to the fore.

Watching that pen back and the decision only gets more baffling every time. Worst PL decision since the Diaz offside.

I think everyone would love the club having a proper go at him in public, but open conflict and having a go at their no 1 ranked referee is unlikely to have much of a positive effect for us. Odds are they’d rally to protect him. We’ll make our feelings well known about the decision behind closed doors without turning it into a direct attack on Michael Oliver.

They could have Oliver not officiate a game for one week. They did that with Taylor I believe.

The funny one with Taylor is that it wasn’t really a mistake from his side. I have a feeling Webb doesn’t like Taylor very much

What Oliver did is match fixing. Not saying he is corrupt, but he just made a penalty out of absolutely nothing which in the end was decisive of the result, hence match fixing.

Absolutely disgusting that he still get to referee Man Utd, after all the decisions he has done over the last years.

Next time he refs at OT, I expect the crowd to abuse the shit out of him. Nothing criminal but I don't want this shitstain ever feeling comfortable.

If we do this I hope we don’t do it as “you Scouse b@st@rd” it has no impact. Only the United fans understand who it is aimed at. “Micheal Oliver you’re a……” would be much stronger.

You just called him corrupt by saying what he did is match fixing

Yeah his name must be included in the chant. The world needs to hear this clown being ridiculed.
