VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Handballs in european football is absolutely mental. No idea whatsoever how they’ve ended up interpreting it as badly as this

See ours is not a pen either but the ref set the precedent in the game.

Never a penalty. Almost feels like they gave it to make up for the awful earlier decisions. I’m relieved it’s evened out today but what a pointless addition to football this has been.

pgmol will be doing their sums to see if they can afford these officials for the premier league.

Never in a million years should that be a pen... But by the standards of this game it obviously is one... And that is absolutely ridiculous

When you look at the pen given against Eriksen when we played Bayern, Maguire's in the first half. There wasn't any chance that they shouldn't give that one and I don't think any of them should be.

Never a penalty but thanks and what a spot kick. C‘Mon United

Given how easily handball penalties are given in the CL, it's a penalty. But as always the rules around handball are stupid.

Ref had no choice but to give that after Maguire’s. Literally no chance that wasn’t going to be a pen. Neither should have been.

Definite yellow for the elbow before that too.

Both penalties are harsh. But if they gave the first againsr Maguire, then no reason not to give us as they have to be applied consistently.

Two absolutely horseshit penalties. At this point they're quite blatantly just making up for their mistakes with even more mistakes.

The IFAB rules have absolutely no mention of proximity, just a vague "making the body bigger" bit, so I suppose by the letter of the law, they're handball.

He watched it about 10 times trying to find a reason not to give it.

Football is like field hockey now. Players just trying to hit the defenders arms like they attack legs in hockey

So that is the handball rule in Europe eh? Everything that touches the hand is penalty it seems.

Never a pen, but after the other one you’ve set a precedent. VAR is ruining the game and should be scrapped.

Why do the Premier League use the proximity cop out if IFAB don’t?

See this is the big tragedy with VAR.

Three major decisions in this game, all wrong, all given because of a bad interpretation of the rules by people watching single-frame images.

This was a good game of football before VAR got involved and it's been ruined, like so many this season

Is there any hope this catastrophe will be scrapped? Feels a bit like momentum is building within the football community.

Exactly. I'm not giving him any credit at all. We know that he was doing his best to find something so he could rule that out.

If you're gonna give shit calls, gotta give them out equally at least

Given the low threshold for a penalty in this game you might as well just start lumping the ball into the box and seeing what happens. It's to the point now where you might aswell just try to hit the ball into a players arm.

Why do the Premier League use the proximity cop out if IFAB don’t?

They’ve only ever mentioned proximity when they didn’t give us a penalty against Tottenham, then it was absolutely crucial.

Hasn’t been very crucial since

Neither were penalties, but I suppose by Champions League standards, where having an arm attached to your body is a punishable offence, I guess they are. At least they've been consistent with it.

Who wants a game of skill, with a formulated game plan and a battle of wills when you can have a shitshow where the team who is favoured in a series of random events wins

But defenders shield the ball out of play like that 10 times a game. Does Rashford get a red purely because the other player has planted his foot first? Because Rashford had no idea the players foot would be there when he was in the air.

Yes, obviously. Nani would never have gotten that red card if there was no Real Madrid player there, players use their feet to stop the ball every game.

For the love of God, get rid of this mess. I've never changed my mind on something so much - I was a big cheerleader for it. What a farce it makes of so many matches. It's almost all that gets spoken about. Nobody knows what's happening half the time. You cant celebrate goals.
