van Gaal joins: Official

Great interview with Louis van Gaal and Cesar Millan the dog whisperer. Both were interviewed live tonight on a talk show in Holland by a very stylish dude called Humberto, sitting at a table together as the only guests. Gave great quotes, as has already been mentioned.
Do you have a link to the interview lad? Would appreciate it.

Get in. Lead by a winner again. Should be a fun season at the very least.

To Dutch caf members, is the twitterer's opinion above that "Manchester United are seen as the stuff of legends In Holland" in any way true? Seems a bit OTT.

I really hope we are still in for Shaw, that's the one target I really hope we remain pursuing.

I will actually be happy if the transfer budget is not that high. Van Gaal is not a transfer muppet and I like that very much about him. I think what I expected will happen: 2 very good players and 1-2 solid squad additions.

With no European football, we don't need to sign too many players(a very deep squad is not needed for next season). It is smart to build the squad slowly. We will easily have a good enough squad to finish in the top 4 next season. That is a given with Van Gaal as manager. Next summer we will sign a couple more players(perhaps better players than available this window) and improve the squad even more. I think we will be a beast for the 2015-16 season.

I'm ten minutes into the interview, I don't speak a word of Dutch. Someone will translate a transcript eventually.

Got the transcript.
Tan: So you’re the new manager, since when has United been talking with you?
LVG: Not that long really, since around the time when Moyes got fired. It’s normal for these negotiations to take long, but people don’t seem to understand. Because a lot of business has to be settled between the club and manager. And you need to talk about the players you want to keep or get. The pre-season program. And also about the youth academy on which they want me to advise them. So we had a lot of conversations.
Tan: So the club calls you for negotiations with your agent.
LVG: No I do all negotiations myself. I just have a friend who are specialized in fiscal matters, who handles most talks for me. Because if I negotiate myself there will be a certain report with the person who will hire you, which doesn’t strike me as ideal.
Tan: What is your most important goal?
LVG: Well the goal is to be number 1 again as quickly as possible. The goal is to not only achieve this with star players, but also with youth products. Nowadays it seems to be “fashion” to do that. So most clubs like that end up talking with me.
Tan: Because your quality is that young players who still have a lot to learn, you can teach them your vision and teach them how to become better?
LVG: Yes, but that could also be older players. Because also young players could be different and dislike a certain vision. It doesn’t have a lot to do with age, it may seem so, but it’s not. I can say from experience.
Tan: So tell me in England they like to use a manager who controls everything like transfers and such. Will you also be taking those tasks upon yourself?
LVG: Yes.
Tan: And is it true they have 100m to spend?
LVG: About money we don’t talk. I talk about players I would like to get, and I ask them if that’s possible. We still have to see what happens. They will have to negotiate the transfers. I only tell them which players I like to keep, I would like to get and which players are allowed to leave.
Tan: There is one player I think who could leave United. Because at the Dutch NT you have 30 players and he’s not there. (Buttner) So I imagine if you’re not good enough for the Dutch NT are you good enough for Manchester United?
LVG: Well you could say stuff like that, but I can’t talk about that. This wouldn’t be good for Buttner if I answered this nor would it be good for United or for me.
(Mourinho Interview plays)
Tan: How is your relationship now that you become opponents?
LVG: That doesn’t matter. If we play each other, he wants to win and I want to win. He is the first person I sent a text message to after my family. And he texted me back saying he was jealous of the clubs I have trained at. He made sure to especially mention AZ Alkmaar.
Tan: Does this United business interrupt with your Dutch NT business.
LVG: No because a manager is different from a player. A player has to make a decision on the pitch within a split second. A manager has 30 to 60 days to think about a lot of stuff. I have done all my work for United during my off days. Today I stayed in Holland where everyone thought I would go to England, because I had to work on the videos of the Ecuador match from last week. I could also have gone to Manchester, but I decide the times when I have can deal with my business. But a player has to perform in a match right away.
Tan: Do the players understand this? Or do you try to explain this to them? Because if you do it, don’t they think they should be able to do so as well. (This is a reference to LVG saying that players who are in transfer talks, have less chance to be selected because they will be with their minds elsewhere, like thinking about moving and how to deal with their families, etc.)
LVG: No, because like I just said a manager and player are completely different. But I did try to conclude the deal as fast as possible so I can now focus as much as possible on the Dutch NT.
Tan: So what’s your schedule like with United? Do you need to be back at number 1 within one season? What did settled on with them?
LVG: Well they think it should be possible within one season. In Spain and Germany I also became champion within my first season, so it’s possible to do so as well in England, but there can be only one champion. If you succeed in doing so, you should be very proud you did.
Tan: How do you compare United to the other clubs you trained at? (Lists clubs LVG trained at) And then there is United a top club in decline. How do you look at the club?
LVG: Well Manchester is the biggest club of the world. When it comes to marketing and their budget, so a club like that needs to play at the top. Because in general your performance gets judged by your budget, but in England you also have Arabic owners who can spend even more. Nonetheless we have to take on the challenge of becoming first again. Which is a great, but difficult challenge.
Tan: And how difficult is it to have someone as SAF on the background? Such a great manager who has won everything. Is his blessing needed?
LVG: Well I will obviously have a drink with him, which I have done plenty of times. We like each other. I was going to succeed him 10 years ago when he was considering to retire. I don’t think it will be an issue, especially because I put more pressure on myself than others can do.
Tan: There were a lot of reactions. (Lists a few example, LVG can make a cake out of a turd, etc.) What did you tell Woodward that made him like you so much?
LVG: I explained him my vision just like I did at Bayern, Barcelona and AZ. When I talk with the board I always explain them my vision and what is needed and which staff I’m going to bring. That’s what impressed him and I explained the exact same thing to the owners.
Tan: Is it also that a club needs to interview with LVG? (In Dutch this means that clubs need to convince van Gaal that THEY would be a great fit for him.)
LVG: I didn’t call United, I didn’t call Bayern. They called me. Which as you know is difficult, because nobody knows my phone number only journalists do, so it has to go through a lot of channels before it reaches me. Which is something I’m proud of, that even though I have no agent nor go out a lot, I pick the clubs when they come. I think I said it in October or November that I would resign after the world cup. The appointment of Hiddink as new Dutch NT manager took 3 months, which is much longer than it took with United.
Tan: When will you move? I imagine your wife will decide that because you’re so busy?
LVG: Exactly. At the club I have only talked about my vision, the preparation for next season and the players. Because I only dealt with them in my off days there wasn’t a lot of time. But she will take care of that so don’t you worry.

Made some small improvements, I'm really too tired right now to type out a whole stereotype/classic Louis Van Gaal interview. But in a couple of months we will see him do the same in England, and if you like absurd comedy, man we are in for a treat.

:D Awesome! It'll be great to have a manager with real presence again.

wonder what the bit about Buttner was. Wish someone would put subs up for this

Can't wait. He's great. I was set on him since the day after Moyes.

I would be surprised if we end up not signing a Dutch player this year. Clasie or Strooman will be a United player this season I reckon.

Ajax
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Manchester United

Decent collection of clubs that.

I am all for the youth being taught proper football, passing and making space to receive a pass. We have played for so long with shitty passing. Give youth a chance, i will be beyond chaffed with we can assemble a team similar to those Ajax teams of the 90s:angel:.
possession-based style football is the future. Gone are the days of long balls and aimless running.
I am extremely interested in knowing the players he has recommended to the club can leave. That will say it all.

I wasn't too sure about LVG when the 1st rumurs appeared before Moyes was sacked, but reading about him has convinced me he is exactly what utd need right now.

He has a clear vision of how his teams play. They attack.
He values youth, and if they are good enogh they will play.
He has shown he's respectful to the history of the club by taking Giggs on. (any word on Scholes and Butt?)
He won't accept any players acting up.
He's a winner.

Tbh I really don't understand why he didn't come in right after SAF, He seems perfect for utd, unless he was adamant of going to the WC.

Compare those quotes to the ones that the United players came out with after the Moyes debacle. Our players simply aren't the same breed of cnut that you'll find at Bayern/Barca.

LvG will do fine here. And assuming that he'll have the final say on signings, he won't buy twattish players like the ones that were forced on him by various Directors of Football on the continent.
Our players are generally very different to players everywhere. Can't remember who said it but years ago there was an article that said when United players rock up to international tournaments they're very different to everyone else. The focus and desire to win was much more ingrained into their DNA. That's the power of fergie and I think the players will respond to similar desires from van gaal

I loved Ferguson, but what was his style of play? Did he establish any definite form of play or was it just sheer brutal winner mentality? His never give up attitude robbed off the players and that resulted in success. This is not a criticism of SAF, it is just that his successor should have been someone like Van Gaal, who was coming in with an idea and not someone who was bring Phil Neville as his assistant. No offense Phil.
Since the 92 kids blossomed, this is the most excited I have been for the future.

I keep hearing this, he sounded more like a drunken guy on a bus in a pink shirt than Hitler. Plus he's Dutch and its not the best thing to say about him.

I'm relatively happy with this appointment from an Arsenal perspective, all in all.

This guy is nearing the end of his career and appears to have been employed as a stopgap before Giggs moves into the role - another thing I wouldn't mind seeing.

He's no longer at the top table of European managers. He went to coach internationally which is really the mark of semi-retirement and he really feels like the best of a rather insipid selection chosen because Ancelotti and Klopp weren't available.

This idea that he's going to help United sweep back to power is quite ambitious, in my view. I reckon the remit is back to top four this year and then maybe something more afterwards. The job is sizeable. The coach is unproven in this league, easily falls out with players and it is very possible that he won't be a success.

When he was linked with Spurs, I didn't see many clamouring for United to step in to stop him. There's a reason why.

Big risk.
Hopefully we can achieve as good a trophy hall as Arsenal, as in 1 trophy in nearly a decade, with van Gaal at the helm.

Well that's rather telling. Bye bye Buttner. He says a lot by choosing not to say anything!

Don't like saying it but, hats off to the Glazers and Wood man.

They done their research, interviewed and talked with him (Glazers included) and made sure it was the right choice..

Now, if only someone had the foresight to do an interview process 12 months ago......

Glad he didn't go to Spuds. I wouldn't have been hearing enough about it from my Spurs mate, but hey, when it came apparent he wouldn't join them, I'm a deluded fan in thinking he can get us back into the champions league. I'd love to see Spurs have an other push!

I'm very happy that van Gaal has taken over as the new manager of United. Even if he does not win anything next year, we should expect some very exciting football. What most fans wanted last season was to see some good football, and some improvement, but instead we had a disaster. With Van Gaal in charge, we will definitely see good football and a huge improvement in results. Hopefully we can get the players that he has targeted and aim for the title instead of just finishing top 4.

Lesson-learned.

A hope is a thought...

Anyway, I really do not see a United team that lost more than one in four last season to go on to win the league or even challenge, especially as a rebuild is needed so a quick start isn't a given. I'd say it was more "hope" to suggest United are in contention.

Funny seeing this is coming from a Liverpool fan whose team jumped from 7th to 2nd out of the blue, and the team being discussed slipped from 1st to 7th, again out of the blue. The only major change from our previous season to the one which just went by was an incompetent manager in charge. Now that we have rectified it, there is no reason to think that we would not be able to make a fist for the title, especially considering we have no European fixtures to worry about.

I assume you think Liverpool have a good chance for the title this coming season again. There is more uncertainty in your situation as most of your team has not had to deal with grueling midweek European fixtures while making an assault on the title. So there are very high chances, you will fade away quickly.

Funny how he can just speak to any players in the Dutch NT and not consider as tapping up.

Let's hope this works. I like how realistic and straight forward he is though. Buttner must be cursing his luck btw
