Do you think the corporate-centric nature of US politics is partly to blame?

Yes. Its really a follow the money game. It comes in on both sides and controls the entire process. The other problem, which is just as big in my opinion, is the apathy the public has towards politics. No gives a shit, no one votes and then people complain and complain yet have no understanding. Then the media sensationalizes the story lines (and don't give me it's just Fox News bollox either).

Look, I'm not poli-sci guru but I do try and research things before I go vote.

you need a billion dollars to get elected in the US. Whoever wants the presidency has to make the deals.

As that Lofgren article says...the only choice we have is which is the lesser evil.

The way the GOP is now with the Tea Party loons, the choice is obvious.

And Grin, the American public does not deserve this type of government. Politicians have sold us out.

But still we should not give up. Both Democrats and Republicans must try and take their parties back from within. There are many progressive groups that advocate agendas for ordinary people. Join them and put pressure on politicians...rather than stay home which is just playing into the hands of the corrupt powers.

Are you shitting me? There are options other than R or D in every election.

the majority will vote R or D. By being noble to vote for a 3rd party candidate you let one of the others win....more than likely the one you dislike the most.

The only solution is to take over the party from within...very difficult. but can be done.

The Tea Party did it. They focused their hate on a black president and succeeded.

The primaries are the key. Caucuses especially.

A 3rd party vote is worse than staying home.

Non sense.

Only reason why such parties have turned into these monsters is because people perpetuate these kind of thinking.

If enough people do vote for independents instead of party men, then yes. It will be a slow process but when others see percentage of independent vote rising, they will be encouraged to vote away from 2 parties as well. If no one starts, then nothing happens.

its has been tried. From a Republican perspective, if not for Perot, Clinton would not have got his second term.

But what we can agree is the current scenario...without active participation of voters is of no benefit to anyone...except the big corporations.

I'd be all for abolishing the Electoral College and going with popular vote. That idea has it's problems but it would help smash the 2-party monopoly. I'd look at doing away with 2/3rds requirements in Congress too.

Please god not Perry, please god not Perry. Have youseen that W movie by Oliver Stone. It suddnely looks like a caricature of Perry more so than it ever did G W.

Maybe Perry getting elected and the inevitable apocalyptical period that follows might be the perfect catalyst in implementing much needing changes, perhaps even in the electoral system.

Can a loss be a win?!

We had Perot which I voted for him and I still believe he would make a huge difference for this country.

If McCain had won the nomination in 2000, he would have made an excellent President. He really would have worked with the Democrats and would not have allowed the religious freaks to take over...which was just cover anyways for Bush and Chenney.

McCain or Gore would have prevented the disaster that followed.... 8 years of Bush destroying this country.

Obama was the obvious choice in 2008...McCain was just past it by then.

But we now have the morons of the Tea Party well in charge of the GOP. True republicans need to take back the party.

I agree. Simple popular vote majority would be sufficient.

wont happen though. But the long term looks better for the democrats with population changes in the West and in Texas.

With greater Hispanic participation, we will bring on lawmakers who represent their communities more. Hopefully that will change things.

Long term looks very good for the Dems, not just because Hispanics. Newly naturalized immigrants and people who reach voting age will also be a big factor in future elections, which is why I think its going to be difficult for a Republican to beat Obama, even in a shit economy.

GOP debate in Tampa is about to start, this should be hilarious viewing yet again.

Mjs is probably in the crowd (I'm kidding!)

Really? Is it like the last debate, with all the candidates, and stupid questions, and stupid answers?

I was going to go to bed, but if it's like that.. I asked earlier when the next debate was, but no one told me :p

Wait... it's a Tea Party debate?!

Rick Perry: A lot of people have called Social Security a ponzi scheme before me. But no one has had the courage to say, "here's how we're going to fix it".

So... I mean.. how are you going to.. you didn't even.. what.

Ron Paul suggests getting entirely rid of the Department of Energy and the Department of Education, massive applause.

Mind you, no one has talked about killin' people yet.

Well I don't live in the US so I'm all for Ron Paul :D

Okay. Okay. Right. Rick Perry was just asked about Obama's tax cuts and if he supports them. His response?

"And he's going to pay for them by raising your taxes."

Obama's gonna win, right? Right?

Please say yes :nervous:

It's not just her. They're all crazy, in their own way. Even the pizza guy.

Okay, the Nirvana-referencing evolution/global warming-believer is alright. And he has less chance to win the Republican nomination than Hillary Clinton.

I just tuned into the debate and Bachmann was speaking. I panicked.

She won't win the primary. Perry and her will split the crazy vote- she needed all of those votes to stand a chance to gain momentum against the money thats been backing Romney.

I agree, Huntsman is a fairly pragmatic or sensible guy for a libertarian so he'd be the best of the bad bunch- doesn't stand a chance in the primary though. Conventional wisdom is he's building his name recognition up for the next election.

Ron Paul on Perry: "I don't want to offend the governor because he might raise my taxes."

Shit just got real.

Sorry but Obama was completely retarded when he continued with Bernanke and Geithner. Completely taken on all responsibility for the bail-outs and monetary policies that have been forced by the financial disaster that should be blamed on Republicans.

Are there any names on the Democrat side that I should be looking out for, in terms of potential runners in the 2016 election?

Whenever Romney speaks, I think I'm watching a 50s voiceover to something. Does he say "gee" a lot?
